Cross compiling boost 1.33.1

Hi all, I have to cross compile the boost 1.33.1 for my development board. I downloaded boost_1_33_1 from the sourceforge download page and I followed the steps provided as per this link ( http://www.boost.org/doc/tools/build/doc/html/bbv2/tasks/crosscompile.html ) 1. specify your cross compiler in user-config.jam using gcc : arm : arm-none-linux-gnueabi-g++ ; 2. bjam toolset=gcc-arm It needs bjam, so I download and installed the bjam from boost download page. when I run bjam toolset=gcc-arm, I am getting the following error: don't know how to make toolset=gcc-arm ...found 1 target... ...can't find 1 target... It will be very helpful, if someone guide me with the steps to cross compile boost1.33.1 version. Thanks in advance.

Help for using interprocess::managed_mapped_file

Hi: I am experimenting with managed_mapped_file to store a vector of a complex_data encapsulating a string and an array quite like the provided "containers of containers" example. However, the program behaves in a rather erratic manner , throwing up boost::interprocess_exception::library_error quite randomly after inserting a few elements. This is due to the fact that STest inherits from a type that is defined in boost namespace which triggers the compiler to try ADL which finds boost::algorithm::find(RangeT& Input, const FinderT& Finder). An obvious solution is to prefix the call to find(...) with ::, but this feels wrong: It does not make sense that the compiler does ADL in this case. There is nothing special about boost::equality_comparable<...> that would make it a more natural argument for boost::algorithm::find(RangeT& Input, const FinderT& Finder) than any other type, and there is nothing special about boost::algorithm::find(RangeT& Input, const FinderT& Finder) that would make it a more natural find implementation for boost::equality_comparable<...> than my find(Rng& rng, T const& t). Maybe the function and the type should not be in the same namespace in the first place. Currently, the mere presence of the specific implementation boost::algorithm::find(RangeT& Input, const FinderT& Finder) disallows the implementation of the canonical find(Rng& rng, T const& t). [serialization] baffled by very long archive load time

I have been developing and maintaining a large computatation statistics package (http://www.astro.umass.edu/BIE) It is an MPI application that uses boost::sersialization to implement persistence. After recently adding a new class, I notice that the archive load times have gone from seconds to over an hour!! The binary archive size is 30MB. Regression tests suggest that the resumed state is correct albeit the very long load time. The package is implemented in multiple shared libraries and classes are exported as suggested in the documentation. I have noticed that I need to compile with "-Ox -fno-inline-small-functions" when x=2,3. I'm not sure if this is significant. The system is Debian/GNU Linux, 2.2Ghz 0pteron 64bit. The behavior is the same with Boost 1.37, 1.38 and 1.42. The new class has many nested STL container instances e.g. vector< vector<float> > . . . but very few archived pointers. I've not been able to isolate the cause in test cases (e.g. making very large instances of STL nested containers; these are deserialized in under a second). Any thoughts on things to track down? [Iostreams] How to check whether file has ben opened?

Hi, I'm using Boost 1.42.0 and I have the same problem like vandamme described in this post at the end: http://groups.google.com/group/boost-list/browse_thread/thread/c290c987bf1f… The following code will assert if the file "test" does not exist: std::string filename("test"); boost::iostreams::stream<boost::iostreams::file_source> file; file.open(filename.c_str()); if (file.is_open()) { // assert fires if file "test" does not exist assert(boost::filesystem::exists(filename)); } The indirect_streambuf doesn't check the device and just returns true if open has been called (independent of whether open has been successful). If I use the std::ifstream supplied with MSVC 9.0 is_open() returns false if the file does not exits. Checked by replacing file declaration with: std::ifstream file; Is this a bug? boost::thread destructor and detach()

It looks like the new C++ standard threading library is going to call terminate() on a thread if it's being destructed, and has not been detached or joined. Is boost::thread going to change to emulate that behavior? (Currently, it calls detach(), not terminate()). I hadn't been calling detach () in my programs when I was spinning off a thread that I didn't care about joining later. Should I be doing that, just so my code works with either library?

[boost::numeric::functional::plus_base] Why the arguments are not const reference

It seems like the operators define in boost::numeric::functional takes reference as argument instead of const reference. Which makes it compile error if I use boost::numeric::functional::plus<int, int> op; int n = op(1,1); The way to work around is boost::numeric::functional::plus<const int, const int> op; int n = op(1,1); This is very ugly and not makes much sense, compared to std::plus. So is it a design flaw or is there some other reason for designing it in this way?

Hi, I've read the post from Roman, and I'm not sure that I've understand. Under linux the timer.elapsed() function will not return the total time needed to do all the operations but only the CPU time, this excludes network communication in parallel programs, time spent for I/O operations ? For example if I need to measure the time needed to read an input file I should not use the timer library? What else? Thank you, Federico

Hi, I'm checking some data of consistence using boost's unit test framework (1.42): BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE( *v[1].y.max, -43.0e-3, std::numeric_limits<double>::epsilon() ); which fails with: difference{1.6137e-14%} between *v[1].y.max{-0.043000000000000003} and -43.0e-3{-0.042999999999999997} exceeds 2.2204460492503131e-16% where v is a std::vector,y a struct and max a boost::optional<double>. The data where parsed by boost.spirit. This is the only failed test case from 16 parsed doubles. What's gone wrong here? Do I miss something? Thanks, Olaf

Hi!! I have been successful in compiling my app with android ndk-r2 and boost libraries. However, I have some problems in compiling my app with it with the new version of android ndk. I have done the same steps but with no results until now. It seems as if erasing from m can cause problems even though it is guaranteed that one and the same element is never tried to be erased by different threads (they never "see" the same elements). Interestingly, the assertion failure occurs in a function for which the comment says: "This is called when a range has been erased" but I never erase ranges. Furthermore, using "schedule(dynamic)" in the omp pragma above almost always leads to one or more threads not finishing.

Hello , I am very new to boost libraries and infact to C++. I have very basic questions. I know that when we have a header file (.hpp) then there must also be a (.cpp) that is the implementation of the header file. But when i see the boost header files in \boost directory I dont find any .cpp files. Where are they? And what if I am using boost header files in my program then in the makefile I need to compile these header files with the corresponding .cpp files. So what path should I use for them? Boost Graph: iterating over internal vertex property

Hi, My graph is defined like this: typedef adjacency_list<vecS, vecS, directedS, Foo*> Graph; The vertex indices can be iterated over like this: typedef property_map<Graph, vertex_index_t>::type IndexMap; IndexMap index = get(vertex_index, g); typedef graph_traits<Graph>::vertex_iterator vertex_iter; std::pair<vertex_iter, vertex_iter> vp; for (vp = vertices(g); vp.first != vp.second; ++vp.first) { std::cout << index[*vp.first] << " "; } (This is straight out of the "Quick Tour" document.) But what if I want to iterate over the Foo pointers in my graph? I suppose one way is this: for (int i = 0; i < num_vertices(g); i++) { Foo *foo = g[i]; } But I assume this wouldn't scale if I were to use listS instead vecS. Also, I'd want to use a proper vertex_iterator anyway, so I can grab all the properties I want in one loop. But how can I access my Foo pointer from the vertex_iterator? [boost-build] dynamic linking and qt under Mac OS X (10.6)

Hi! I'm having problems installing software which is compiling perfectly under windows and (k)ubuntu on a (intel) mac. Having using darwin ; in the user-config.jam and having <link>static as a requirement in the jamroot, everything but the parts relying on qt compile, link and work. BUT: - dynamic linking fails (leaving out the <link>static requirement) - linking to the qt libraries fails ( as on ubuntu, I have " import qt ; \ using qt4 : /usr/local/Trolltech/Qt-4.6.2 ;" in my user-config.jam, obviously with the correct path): the linker complaining about "ld: library not found for -lQtOpenGL_debug" (or the same without _debug for release mode) - there are files for *.a, *.la, *.framework, what is the linker looking for? If I try to use "using gcc ;" not even static linking works, the linker complaining about "ld: unknown option: --start-group". I installed qt from source in the most naive way (without any special options to configure). Can anybody give me some hints what might be wrong - which options I should try or where else I went astray? Thanks a lot in advance Tim P.S.: boost tarball was extracted to /usr/local/boost_1_42_0, I built the libraries we use (system, filesystem, serialization, date_time).

How to use Boost Log

Hello, Well I know Boost log (http://torjo.com/) is not part of boost (yet ?) but I haven't been able to figure it out on my own... So I was hoping somebody here could help me. I've installed Boost using Boost Pro. The install is very easy though it does not install Boost Log. I got Boost Log separately but it does not come with libraries directly linkable with VS2009. How can I generate linkable libraries for Boost Pro, for VS2009? Thanks! Jean

Hello, Although some time ago I used boost graph in some of my projects I found this library too generic for me :) I still have some questions: 1. How to check if my graph is a tree? 2. How to generate random graph? (using generate_random_graph) - I can't find any examples of random graph generation so it should be very very easy and I need the simplest possible example. 3. How to use layout functions like random_graph_layout? - as in the question above I can't find any examples. 4. Hi folks, To better understand the "future" concept, I am looking at the following code and have several questions: (1) I got a compiling warning: 'this' : used in base member initializer list. How can I get rid of it? (2) how can I bind class's local data x_ into the new thread? I tried: t_(boost::bind(&future<T>::run, this, x_) ), but it does not work. (3) There seems a race condition in the overloaded function call operator()(). What wrong did I do? BTW: if the future is constructed as ctor using: future(boost::function<T ()> const& f); the code snippet works with minor modification. [filesystem] exists() throws if no disk in CD-ROM drive (Boost version 1.41)

Hello, I was looking to remove a wrapper function I wrote a while ago when I was using Boost 1.35.0. This wrapper caught exceptions from boost::filesystem::exists and returned false: bool PathExists(const boost::filesystem::path& path) { try { return boost::filesystem::exists(path); } catch(const boost::filesystem::filesystem_error&) { return false; } } Now our organisation has upgraded to 1.41.0 I wanted to get rid of the wrapper as I can see that ticket 2725 (https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/2725) has been fixed in 1.37.0. I have problems using the "program_options" library while parsing a command line with multiple commands with multiple arguments each. The test.cpp is in attachment. Accessing locale information

Boost Graph: add_edge causes compiler error

Hi, Could someone please help me understand why the simple program below won't compile? On the call to add_edge, I get: error: invalid conversion from ‘Foo*’ to ‘long unsigned int’ ...followed by two "initializing argument" errors. I've read all the docs I could find on add_edge, but I still don't understand why the code below won't work. Boost Graph: preventing duplicate vertices when constructing graph incrementally

Hi, The vast majority of Boost Graph's sample code has pre-defined source data. For example, from city_visitor.cpp: enum { SanJose, SanFran, LA, SanDiego, Fresno, LasVegas, Reno, Sacramento, SaltLake, Phoenix, N }; E edge_array[] = { E(Sacramento, Reno), E(Sacramento, SanFran), E(Reno, SaltLake), E(SanFran, SanJose), E(SanJose, Fresno), E(SanJose, LA), E(LA, LasVegas), E(LA, SanDiego), E(LasVegas, Phoenix) }; Unfortunately, static source data with enums as the vertices isn't very typical in real-world programs. It's much more common to construct the graph incrementally from a streaming data set, such as a file containing a list of edge pairs. But this presents a problem: As the list of edges is read in, a vertex may be encountered more than once, so add_vertex can't simply be called on every vertex found because that will result in redundant vertices. An obvious fix is to check whether a vertex exists before calling add_vertex. If it is found, it can be used for the edge; otherwise add_vertex can be called and the returned value used for the edge. The only question is, How do I check whether a vertex exists? I could iterate through all vertices in the graph, searching for one that equals the one I'm trying to add, but this approach doesn't scale well. It has a time complexity of O(V). A faster solution to this problem appears to be in the boost_web_graph.cpp sample. It deals with the same issue: It reads in graph data from a file called boost_web.dat, and this file contains the same vertex value in multiple places. Rather than call add_vertex multiple times (creating redundancies), the code puts every vertex it finds into a map. The map associates the vertex's unique value (a string in this case) with its corresponding vertex descriptor. Then, before calling add_vertex, the code checks the map for the unique value; if found, it uses the corresponding vertex descriptor; otherwise it calls add_vertex and adds the new ID/descriptor pair to the map. I assume that this is faster (compared to my naive approach of searching linearly through the vertices) because std::map's insert function is supposed to have logarithmic time complexity. It probably achieves this with a red-black tree, so as long as the keys are sortable, O(log(V)) complexity is guaranteed. Strings (used in the sample code) are certainly sortable, although in my program I'm using pointers as the vertex property. But I guess pointers are sortable too, since they're just numbers really. My initial tests show that this approach works properly with pointers as the values, though I've not done any performance testing, only correctness testing. Any feedback on this would be appreciated. Hi all, I'm trying to compile boost::numeric::ublas with NVCC and I get the following errors: /usr/local/include/boost/type_traits/has_new_operator.hpp:28: error: `&' cannot appear in a constant-expression /usr/local/include/boost/type_traits/has_new_operator.hpp:28: error: template argument 2 is invalid This is related to #3919 and #3980 in a effort to make NVCC work with boost. Is there a known workaround so that I could tweak boost/config/compiler/nvcc.hpp? The warning messages have gone when I used a const object. Thanks. However the "*unregistered class* " crash still remains if the if base/derived classes are placed in a static lib. (for 1.42 only). hello, I'm using boost for the very first time and I'm having big problems in understanding how to proceed. I'm working in C++, and my aim would be creating a graph where each node is a 2D point and each edge is the distance between two points. I'd like to be able to say "vertex 0 and vertex 1 are 5mm apart". How to do that? [mpl] Constant time mpl::contains<mpl::set>

Hi, I'd like to be able to query if a MPL Sequence contains a certain type, aka mpl::contains. But mpl::contains is documented to always have linear complexity, even for mpl::set's. How can you differentiate between types of MPL Sequences, so you can use mpl::at for sets and mpl::contains for vectors? MPL itself seems to do this by template specialization, e.g. for mpl::at, which is overloaded. But template specialization relies on MPL implementation details, is there a way to detect any type that models an associative sequence? I can't find something like mpl::is_set nor a tag to dispatch with in the AssociativeSequence concept. Thank you, Stefan

[serialization] Are there libraries to deserialize XML for any scripting languages?

Hi, I'd like to be able to work with the data serialized using the xml_oarchive serializer in a scripting language for rapid development of a debugging/diagnostic tool. It seems conceivable a library could construct a native representation of a C++ object model. I would think it could do this using just the serialized XML since most scripting languages allow dynamic creation/modification of classes and objects. I've searched the web for such a thing, but didn't stumble across anything. Can anyone point me toward any work that's been done in this area? A possible alternative that comes to mind is to use py++ to generate Python/boost.Python bindings to the original C++ classes and just use the boost::serilization XML deserializer, but I'm concerned getting all that working will offset the time savings of a scripting language. [iostreams] Truncate file?

Hi all, I'm trying to work out how to chop some data off the end of a file once I have finished modifying it. I'm not sure how to adjust the file size in a portable fashion, and although I'm using boost::iostreams I can't see how to either set the size of the underlying stream or how to otherwise indicate where the stream should end. Is this possible with boost:iostreams? If not, is there another portable way to remove data from the end of a file, causing its size to shrink? All I can find around the place are calls to ftruncate() and the like, but I would like my program to work on Windows as well as Linux, and hopefully other platforms too. Many thanks, Adam.

Boost::ASIO Winsock.h already included?

I'm getting this error when building on windows. Looking online it seems it can happen if you include windows.h before boost/asio.hpp without setting WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN. I've only got three places in my code that import windows.h on their own, and I prefixed them all with that macro, but I'm still getting one error. The only other thing I can think of is that one of the boost libraries is including it and that's throwing a wrench into things. Unforunately it's proving particularly pernicious to determine all the files that include windows.h. Does anyone know which libraries include it or have experience getting rid of this error?

Find which boost header

Hi, I have trouble finding which header I should use when I want to use a part of boost. For instance, I wish to use boost::optional but am not entirely sure which header to use. In the documentation online I can find everything about boost::optional except which header is recommended. I'm sure it is boost/optional.hpp or boost/optional/optional.hpp but that's not really my question. Am I supposed to just browse through my local boost include dir to find an appropriate header? Or is there somewhere an overview of which header files are recommended for boost users? Thanks, Mathijs

troubles deriving from using boost variant

Hi all, I have been using boost's variant library in a project, and I've noticed that when I import the class using the variant class into other classes I start having the strangest compilation problems. I've been dealing with these problems for the last few months by isolating that code as much as possible. I've put it behind a factory which returns an abstract class which hides the fact that a variant is being used by the implementing class at all. This keeps other classes from having to import the implementing class and by extension the boost variant header, but it also makes it difficult to make full use of visitors together with the variant because creating new visitors that include the implementing class leads to these same strange compilation problems. I was hoping that someone might be able to give me a better diagnosis for the underlying reason for these problems. I've included the error output below. If anyone can give me any greater insight into what's causing these errors, I would be extremely grateful. Boost serialisation: base ptr regression in 1.42

I have a serious regression in boost 1.42 serialisation. Now getting a unregistered class, exception, on Suse linux using gcc 4.2.1. This test passes on boost 1.39/1.40. [proto] Comma Strangeness

Well, my little lambda-like experimental language is getting rather large. I'm really having fun with it and am close to actually doing something almost useful with it. :) Unfortunately I've run into a problem I can't seem to isolate to a small testcase. I'm doing something like this: proto::display_expr( list [ obj["name1"].attr["a"], obj["name2"].attr["a"], obj["name3"].attr["b"] ] ); Presume I have all of the terminals, members, etc. declared/defined correctly (at least "correctly" as I understand it). display_expr dumps out an expression without any comma operators. It just shows a subscript off "list" with one "index," obj["name3"].attr["b"]. It's the behavior I would expect if the operands of the commas were not protoized expressions, but they _should_ be protoized. The funny thing is, if I write a small testcase just isolating the terminals, members, etc. needed to construct the expression, it works as expected. But in the context of the (much) larger language, it fails. However, the grammar specification shouldn't have any bearing on what display_expr dumps out. So any ideas as to why commas might be gobbled up prematurely? -Dave

issues with cost_map is a_star algo

I have a working modified Dijkstras algo using boost. My graph has an edge_property called my_edge_property. The type of distance_map is time_duration. I provide a distance_combine class which has a function with signature time_duration my_distance_combine::operator()(const time_duration &timeAtVertex, const my_edge_property &weight) { //My Implementation } distance_infinity has a value pos_infin. This modified version of Disjkstra algorithm works fine and runs correctly. Now I want to use a_star algorithm instead of dijisktra. So I provided a hueristic class with a function time_duration myhuersticClass::operator() (vertex_descriptor u) { //My Implementation } and pass that as the hueristic function to a_star algorithm. I expected this should be enough for everything to work but I get compile errors. the error is in file astar_search.hpp (line 289) put(cost, *ui, inf);// compile error at this line error C2679: binary '=' : no operator found which takes a right-hand operand of type 'const boost::date_time::special_values' (or there is no acceptable conversion) Now in the same file one line above that statement put(distance, *ui, inf); compiles fine. The documentation says that the type of cost_map and distance_map are be the same. If that is the case then why does assiging pos_inifn to cost_map does not work?? Looking at it closely I see that CostInf=boost::date_time::special_values, (which is correct) CostZero=my_edge_property (???? do not understand) Also why is the type of CostZero= my_edge_property (if I try to pass distance_zero as minutes(0) compiler does not like it and complains that time_duration cannot be converted to my_edge_property) Looks like cost_map is vector<my_edge_property> and not vector<time_duration> which is what the distance_map is. I don't see any way to passthe cost_map to a_star function. boost filesystem::ifstream for files larger than 2GB on OS X

Hello, I have been using the std::ifstream w/o issue except my data files have grown > 2GB, and as is well documented it is failing. I am on OS X 10.6 and I have my executable compiling/running as a x86_64 (64bit) executable. I read that boost supports a 64bit streamposition in boost::filesystem::ifstream. I have compiled boost using darwin ports (I should state I never specifically said anything about x86_64 during this compilation). I have re-run my program and I have the same problem (I use tellg to confirm the issue is the streamposition). My questions are: 1 - Does the boost ifstream in fact support large files? 2 - If 1) is true, then what specifically needs to be done to get this support? 3 - Unrelated, but what do the "-mt" and "-d" added to the dylib file name mean? (libboost_filesystem-mt-d.dylib) thanks! The problem is that clients finish their work in different time and I wonder if gather blocks until all workers finish. I believe there might be a bug in void_caster::recursive_unregister(): that function member is called in the destructors of the void caster template classes. It searches the set inside void_caster_registry singleton for all the entries that are descendants of the current one (i.e., the void_caster being destroyed) and performs the following operations: - delete the shortcuts. - remove the corresponding entries from the set. However, void_caster::recursive_unregister() doesn't remove from the registrar the entry corresponding to the current void_caster(). This creates the problem below: Consider a scenario where a dll containing some serialization functionality is loaded explicitly at runtime (i.e., using LoadLibrary() on Windows or dlopen on Unix). There are no parent-child relationships among the serialized classes registered by that DLL: all serialized classes are derived from one abstract base. While unloading the library, its void_caster singletons are destroyed but there are no shortcuts to remove from the global registrar since there are no parent-child relationships. All entries corresponding to those are still in the global registrar and point to the void_caster singletons ALREADY DESTROYED AND DISCARDED. When the main process exits, the registrar repeats the traversal for whatever executable-bound void_caster singletons are about to be destroyed. During these subsequent traversals, void_caster::recursive_unregister() visits the entries left after the previous explicit dll download and tries to identify the parent-child relationship. In doing so, it accesses the dangling vc pointers generating access violations: void_cast.cpp(Line 286): const void_caster * vc = *it; void_cast.cpp(Line 287): if(vc->m_parent == this){ //<--------------------- here is the access violation I can reproduce the crash systematically, but I am not 100% sure about the reason or whether a simple unregistration is enough. I believe this is (again) a question for Robert Ramey, but I thank for any feedback I might get. Boost Graph: vertex class has no copy constructor

Hi, I'm using the Boost Graph library to construct a directed graph: typedef boost::directed_graph<BasicBlock> Graph; The vertex class, "BasicBlock", is not my own; it comes from the LLVM project. Unfortunately, the declaration above causes a slew of compiler errors (see below) that appear to be related to BasicBlock's copy constructor. Sure enough, I checked BasicBlock.h, and its copy constructor is declared private and is not even implemented. There appears to be some sort of design issue that prevents this class from having a copy constructor. Is there some workaround for this on the Boost Graph side, or must vertex classes always have a copy constructor? Linking boost in Visual Studio VC++ project

Hi ! I'm trying to find out how to link boost libraries under windows to a visual studio VC++ project (that will be a .dll library). Where can I find some information ?! I've compiled the boost libraries and followed the instruction found at: http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_35_0/more/getting_started/windows.html but when I build the project it gives me an error trying to find a libboost_filesystem-vc80-mt-gd-1_41.lib, but no one libraries build starts with the 'lib' prefix ? ThanksVladimir and David, I tried "-static" without "-static-libgcc" and "-Wl,-Bstatic" and it worked fine. My test sample that uses program option and single threaded works fine with the above change. But my other application that is multi threaded (using boost thread API) and uses program option still segfaults. When I try to add "libpthread" and "-lboost_thread-gcc41-mt" in linking I start getting segfaults. Hi all, I'd like to obtain an N-dimensional MultiArray implementation given a base pointer, N extents, and N strides. My use case requires padding the stride in one dimension in a way seemingly not obtainable taking views of the usual boost::multi_array_ref. Code like the following would be ideal boost::array<std::size_t,3> extents = { 2, 3, 4 }; boost::array<std::size_t,3> strides = { 1, 2, 7 }; // Note 7 not 6 boost::scoped_array<int> raw(new int[extents[2]*strides[2]]); using boost::detail::multi_array::multi_array_view; multi_array_view<int,3> a(raw.get(), extents, strides); except that the appropriate constructor in multi_array_view is private (boost/multi_array/view.hpp:442). boost::detail::multi_array::sub_array would also be ideal if it's constructor was accessible(boost/multi_array/subarray.hpp:370). I can make either accessible by #defining BOOST_NO_MEMBER_TEMPLATE_FRIENDS, but that's evil. Am I missing something in Boost.MultiArray? asio: how to handle unreliable network/glitches/server down ?

Ok. I am a newbie to asio so bear with me: I have the following piece of code for handling a unreliable network and/or server crashed/servicing where I do not want the client to fail. My solution basically involves looping round , sleeping and trying again. .... int no_of_tries = clientEnv.no_of_tries(); while ( no_of_tries > 0 ) { try { boost::asio::io_service io_service; Client theClient( io_service, clientEnv.get_cmd(), clientEnv.host(), clientEnv.port() ); io_service.run(); ... // Some kind of connection error fall through and try again. } catch (std::exception& e) { .... } sleep( RETRY_POLL_PERIOD ); no_of_tries--; } This does not seem right to me, but I am not sure how typical my case is. Are there any known design patterns/idioms that provide a more robust ways of handling unreliable networks/glitches and cases where the server needs to be taken down temporarily ? Based on the domain two evaluator for different contexts are provided. For standard operators that works great. [iostreams] bzip2 filter fails with large file on Xen system

Hello, I've tried the example at http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_42_0/libs/iostreams/doc/index.html It works correctly on small files (a few kb), but it raises the exception "bzip2 error" on a file as large as ~270Mb, when compiled with g++ 4.2, with no special flags, on a 64 bit Linux Xen system. On another system (Mac OS X), the example runs fine on that same file. Here is some info about the system: Linux kernel: 2.6.24-26-xen bzlib2: 1.0.4-2ubuntu4 Boost: 1.42.0 Are there known incompatibilities with that system or with virtualization environments in general? Is there any "self-test" that I can run to test the library? Nicola

I've been having a poke around in the boost source code boost/mpl/set/aux_/iterator.hpp and I've found that if I tweak the partial specialization template <typename Set, typename Tail> struct next< s_iter< Set, Tail > > : s_iter_get< Set, typename Tail::base > { }; to template <typename Set, typename Tail> struct next< s_iter< Set, Tail > > { typedef typename s_iter_get< Set, typename Tail::base >::type type; }; Then everything works fine on solaris S1S12u1. Is there a problem with S1S12u1 wrt to deep metafunction forwarding? Is this a suitable workaround? I've still not figured out why the boost::mpl::copy works ok with sets ( surely they will also have to use s_iter_get during the fold ) - I'm assuming that the views 'invokes' boost::mpl::next in such a way which isn't supported by the compiler. Hello Actually I was trying to serialize my main code using boost_serialization (this is the small program I have written to extract my actual problem of how to serialize the static int class member variable). Without boost_serialization of static int variable the code is running fine. But when I try to serialize the static int variable in "Public" of linklist class I get the error (segmentation fault). I tried to use the "BOOST_STRONG_TYPEDEF" to wrap the "int" to "tracked_int" but the effort was in vain. Problem with boost regex and icu support.

Hello everyone, new boost user here. :) I'm attempting to use the regular expression library with ICU support and I'm running into a coredump inside of boost. The following test program is dumping core depending on the regular expression. Replacing the " " with a ".*" results in a crash. Can anyone provide a hint about why? wave: changing to relative paths in #line output?

I'm evaluating wave as a cpp replacement. I'm having a problem at the moment in that the #line output shows the name of the source file as an absolute path, and my regressions are expecting a gcc-style relative path. Before I have a go at hacking this, can anyone tell me if there's some configuration that can be set to output relative paths? Or to make the output more gcc/cpp-compatible? There are a couple of other minor differences to gcc and mcpp: wave produces '#line n', for example, and the others produce '# n'. Thanks - Paul

Boost static linking

I am using the Boost library with g++ on Linux. When I built this library, I executed this command: ./bjam (without parameters). My lib directory looks like this: libboost_thread.a libboost_thread.so libboost_thread.so.1.41.0 ... Building the project using Thread library, I added boost_thread to the linker dependencies list. Now my program depends on the shared library libboost_thread.so.1.41.0. For my purposes, I need to make static linking, to exclude runtime dependency. Linking with Boost on x64

Hi all, I have build the bjam tool and then I run the following: bjam toolset=sun stdlib=sun-stlport address-model=64 stage When I try to link with the generated libboost_thread.so I get the following error: ld: fatal: file <my_path>/libboost_thread.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64 Does this mean that the libraries are compiled for 32bit instead of 64bit? shared_memory_object constructor

I find shared_memory_object constructor semantics to be rather inconvenient for embedding it into another class. Consider the following class A { public: A(int type) : shm_(pass params to the shared_memory_object ctor) { } private: shared_memory_object shm_; }; If my class A is such that a shared_memory_object needs to be called with either create_only or open_only based on the type passed to A's constructor, I can't do it easily. i.e. some thing like A(int type) : shm_(type == something ? create_only : open_only) {} This won't work because create_only & open_only are different types & this will call 2 different overloaded constructors, hence the above code will not compile. Alternatives here are 1) make A a templated class instead of having type as a ctor param. i.e. template <class T> class A { public: A() : shm_(T(), other params) {} }; then use A<create_only> a; A<open_only> b; OR 2) Keep a shared_memory_object ptr inside non-templated class A instead of an actual object and create it dynamically. Assuming, I don't want to use either of these options, is there any other nifty trick anyone can think of to achieve what I want to do?

shared_memory_object & managed_shared_memory

This is what I am trying to do - I have to 2 processes in the same box. - I need to send a buffer of data from one process to another. - The other process reads the data & may want to send something back. - At any time there is only one such buffer in process - i.e. no queue of data to send. - the process will send a new buffer only when it gets acknowledgement back from the other process that it's finished reading it. I am a little unclear as to what I should use here - shared_memory_object or managed_shared_memory - it's not very clear what's the difference between the two. I tried out a sample from the condition_variable example here & it seems to work. http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_36_0/doc/html/interprocess/synchronization_… However, in the example the size of the shared memory is based on the size of the trace_queue object. But I see weird result when there are cells like "IG9/10/7-10:USCEFLCORR0001", tokenizer returns tokens like "IG9/,0/7-,0:USCEFLCORR000". I am assuming it's because of slash '/'. I know I'm supposed to use dynamic_properties etc. Could someone show me how exactly? Thanks.

[iostreams] Flushing a zlib_compressor... how to obtain a “zlib sync flush” ?

Is there some magic required to obtain a "zlib sync flush" when using boost::iostreams::zlib_compressor ? Just invoking flush on the filter, or strict_sync on a filtering_ostream containing it doesn't see to do the job (ie I want the compressor to flush enough that the decompressor can recover all the bytes consumed by the compressor so far, without closing the stream; I remember using such a feature when driving zlib directly in the past, and there's a page http://www.bolet.org/~pornin/deflate-flush.html describing it nicely). Looking at the header, there seem to be some "flush codes" defined (notably a sync_flush) but it's unclear to me how they should be used (bearing in mind my compressor is just added into a filtering_ostream's chain, although I do have a reference to it if some specific method needs invoking). [wave] Some basic questions...

I've just started using wave, but it occurs to me that there are some basic things I don't understand about it, and which aren't (I think) covered in the online docs. Does anyone know: 1 - presumably wave uses UTF-8? Will it accept arbitrary UTF-8 files? What if the source starts with a 3-byte UTF-8 BOM? 2 - how closely does the source have to conform to C/C++ code? I can understand that the source has to follow basic lexing conventions (use of apostrophes, and so on), but wave actually seems to carry out full C++ lexing. Why is this necessary - could it just process whitespace-delimited tokens (outside comments)? The reason I'm asking is that I'm pre-processing arbitrary non-C code. This seems to be Ok if I disable whitespace insertion for disambiguation, but I'd just like to be sure that I'm not missing something. Thanks - Paul
