Boost "Application" concept?

Hello, I know Boost has within its repo the elements of bits that comprise a typical application; i.e. program options, for starters, etc. However, I was curious, is there a library in the Boost repo that wraps it all up in a prescribed format? Or a handle of recipes? Things I would expect to find include the program options, ability to run, with some arguments, etc. Not an exhaustive set of expectations, to be sure. Boost 1.68.0 - boost hashing changed ?

Hello there, I was trying to upgrade boost 1.53.0 to boost 1.68.0. But, it looks like hashing code generation has changed, since the following line gives two different hashcode for same string input. boost::hash<string> namehash; size_t hashCode = namehash( name); Where name is string, an e.g “abcdefg” With boost 1.53.0 the hashCode is 168904 And with boost 1.68.0 the hashCode is 69530. I am giving just sample random number here, those two numbers are never equal, with everything remain the same, only change boost version on EL6 Linux machine with GCC 4.9 compiler. This is blocking me to upgrade to newer version of boost. I appreciate if anyone has some info on this. Thanks

Boost Multiprecision list.

I am aware the the boost multiprecision library is a headers library. -Is Boost multiprecision accurately arbitrary precision, ie. can have its number precisions and scales always made to a larger number, contingent only to the amount of available OS memory? -If I want to use boost Boost multiprecision on its own, what is the name of the Boost .dll or .lib files that have all the headers in it? I need a minimal set of files in order to run multiprecision on its own. ?

It appears to select between postfix_increment_proxy<Iterator> and writable_postfix_increment_proxy<Iterator> based on whether Reference is the same type as Value ignoring cv& what is the case that writable_postfix_increment_proxy<Iterator> is selected. So when is Reference going to be a different 'base type' to Value? is this to support user returning their own proxy or something?

I am working on a Enterprise File Backup solution named Vessel @ https://github.com/VesselEnterprise/vessel-backup. My project uses Boost through and through. [Range] Help with syntax

Given struct S { int i( ) const; }; vector<S> v; set<int> s; I want to write (approximately) for_each( v | transform( []( const S & s ){ return s.i( ); } ), s.emplace ); With the intention putting all the i's extracted from v into the set s. My syntax is all over the place, and I'm not sure how to express the s.emplace bit. Also is there a better way to say the whole thing? If I were doing push_back instead of emplace there's a facility especially for that, but I guess Boost::Range hasn't embraced emplace because range-v3 is around now. Hello all, I ma having a major issue with the boost library. I have been having this issue for a few days now and I can't seem to figure out what the problem is. Basically, I get this error message after my linker: "undefined reference to `boost::archive::text_oarchive_impl<boost::archive::text_oarchive>::save(std::string const&)'" My complete linker command is as follows: " -L. -L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu -L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/lib/lapack -lfreetype -lGLEW -llapack -lboost_serialization -lglut -lGL -lGLU -L/usr/local/lib -pthread -lwx_gtk2u_xrc-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_stc-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_richtext-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_ribbon-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_propgrid-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_aui-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_gl-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_html-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_qa-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_adv-3.1 -lwx_gtk2u_core-3.1 -lwx_baseu_xml-3.1 -lwx_baseu_net-3.1 -lwx_baseu-3.1" I built Boost 1.64 from the source and kept the default values. I also built the whole library. My Boost library is built into the /usr/local folder. I am pretty sure that I am referencing the linker libraries correctly but I can't seem to figure out why I would be getting this error message. Has anyone had an issue similar to this before?

Hi, I see #include <iostream> in header boost/serialization/export.hpp, but that header uses nothing from namespace std. To me it looks like that #include is unnecessary, as all my code compiles fine if I remove that #include, but maybe I'm wrong. Was it included by mistake? PS: I'm using Boost 1.64, but I see the same #include in Boost 1.68

I have some basic startup for use questions pertaining to the Boost multiprecision library. I have downloaded the set of 64 bit .dll files successfully online, and would like some help points to help me get going. *I have heard that there are some strange results that can happen if you are quizzing multiprecision for trigonometry and try to keep using the double type. Is this true, so that I can just kee relying on the std library instead? -What is the name of the 64 bit windows .dll, or .dll files, that are the ones for the multiprecision library? -If I wish to go into arbitrary precision and scale numbers, what is the type I should use for an integer? What is the #include statement I should use, and how do I specify the number of whole number points and decimal points, before starting my operations? -If I wish to go into arbitrary precision and scale numbers, what is the type I should use for a rational number? Twenty years and time to retire

The idea behind Boost was hatched in March, 1998, and the proposal document <https://www.boost.org/users/proposal.pdf> was released May 6, 1998. That makes Boost twenty years old, and makes me twenty years older. It is high time I retire from Boost; I haven't been able to contribute for some time now. Hello I face this error and I cannot figure out a fix. I use bjam to build the application code, and inside site-config file, I have also the following a section where I define BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK: ''' using gcc : : : where I have defined <define> BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK ''' I have build boost libraries with the following command: sudo bjam toolset=gcc --with-system --with-thread --with-timer --with-chrono --with-filesystem --with-program_options --with-timer *--with-log* --with-program_options --with-date_time --with-math --with-serialization --with-regex --with-chrono --with-atomic runtime-link=shared define=*BOOST_ALL_DYN_LINK* --prefix=/opt/boost_shared install | tee output.txt I also changed some files (macro definitions and jam files) because I had an error that system and filesystem are configured to be compiled both as static and shared. I compiled them as shared. When I build the application code, I have plenty of `boost::log::v2_mt_posix::...` error messages. Could you give me some guide why this problem exist? Thanks, Antonis

This works when I use the register_type function but not the BOOST_CLASS_EXPORT_KEY() and BOOST_CLASS_IMPLEMENT() macros. I need to use the macros since I am using shared libraries. Hi Sean, I've been recently working on a library that is supposed to abstract some of the platform-specific aspects of TLS peer verification (e.g. accessing the OS cert store) and obtaining the system proxy information. [filesystem] Library maintainers needed

I'm retiring, so Boost.Filesystem needs one or more maintainers. This is a high complexity library, further complicated by (1) requiring both Windows and non-Windows implementation code and (2) needing a major upgrade for compatibility with the new standard library version shipped in C++17. Furthermore, there are constant Pull Requests and Issues that arise, and these almost invariably take a lot of time for the maintainer to process. My personal opinion is that Boost should deprecate the Boost library in favor of the standard library implementations, and do only minimal maintenance for several years until most users have migrated to C++17 or later. Hello all, I am new to boost. I try to use some boost files in my program, but I have trouble with some of them. For example compiling the following program #include <boost/log/expressions/formatters/date_time.hpp> int main() { return 0; } with the command g++ -std=c++11 test.cpp -o main -I/home/user101/boost/ -L/home/user101/boost I have a message like the following /tmp/ccm6UOud.o: In function `boost::system::generic_category()': test.cpp:(.text._ZN5boost6system16generic_categoryEv[_ZN5boost6system16generic_c ategoryEv]+0x5): undefined reference to `boost::system::detail::generic_category _ncx()' I also tried to append -lboost_system in the command, but I take back the following message: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lboost_system collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status Could you please guide me with that? Cannot cast from std::string to seastar::sstring.

Hi guys, I'm investigating a [bug](https://github.com/scylladb/scylla/issues/2905) in the Seastar/lexical_cast and I got stuck. Let me introduce what's going on and the further investigation that I did. The Seastar framework uses the boost program options to parse the command line arguments. But when the user try to pass a command line argument of seastar::sstring (Seastar string type) with a white space, the lib tells us that is invalid value. Turns out the boost program options call lexical_cast to cast from std::string to seastar::sstring. This cast is failing. The lexical_cast uses a stream to extract the value from the source, but the operator>> stops in the white space. Making the second validation in the same [line](https://github.com/boostorg/lexical_cast/blob/boost-1.66.0/include/bo… false. Note, there is a [call](https://github.com/boostorg/lexical_cast/blob/boost-1.66.0/include/bo… to unsetf to ensure that the white space will be skipped: stream.unsetf(std::ios::skipws);. What's am I trying to do is figure out where the problems live? Is there a bug in boost or is a sstring implemantion problem? Am I missing something? Thanks!

OK, I’ve just read the preamble for the ASIO library (Chapter 32) and it seems that this library, whilst extremely useful, does exactly the opposite of what I’m trying to achieve, as it allows main code execution to continue whilst waiting for a response from an external device. I need my main code to pause until I receive a response from the hardware. I don’t want to use a timer, as this would be potentially unreliable - I can never know how long a pause would be required and there would be the danger of having the code hanging around wasting time if the timer value is too generous. Over the USB connection the manufacturer estimates that I should be able to get a full set of responses back in around 100ms. Are you familiar with Boost ASIO? It's a common method of handling asynchronous communication, though how much it can be used in your situation may depend on the particular hardware interface. The typical situation for a single-threaded process is to set up an executor context, maybe set up signal handlers, then make an asynchronous call using ASIO's objects. When making the asynchronous calls, you provide a callback function object. Your callback function object may then make another request during its processing. ASIO handles the under-the-hood abstraction (and generally simplifies it for most situations). But it's up to you to ensure that your call sequence is safe: for example ASIO will not prevent you from making multiple simultaneous writes to the same file descriptor despite it being unsafe in many situations. My understanding is that your callback is placed onto a function queue rather than called directly (contrast to POSIX signals where the OS interrupts whatever function is running right now). That can hurt your response performance if you're doing long-running tasks so it's worth considering. Hi, I'm trying to find a method of solving the problem detailed below using Boost (or an alternative: 1 - I have to send a series of messages to a hardware device to query its internal parameter values at application load-time. This I can do; 2 - I have a callback that receives responses from the hardware, though I get some replies go missing due to saturation; 3 * The hardware manufacturer tells me that I should send 1 query then wait for the response before sending the next query. I could use Sleep, but this depends on a specific wait time and I'm not sure if it suspends all processing, including my callback, so this doesn't look satisfactory. What I'm looking for is a "wait until response" kind of thing, but I haven't found such a thing so far, though I have found several wait routines for handling multiple threads. [ASIO] Reestablish TCP connection after EOF

You can connect to it and as soon as you have a command promt you can send a command to the server. It executes it and sends back the result and a command promt. Then you can send the next command... There is no problem with this part. My code is able to establish the connection, send and recive data until my client gets EOF. It means the server broke the connection. I would like my client to be able to reestablish the connection and this part is not working. Memory header not found

Hey guys, I am new here and wanted some help from you guys. I was trying to upgrade and compile the FElt software, a software for finite element analysis. The source code is here : https://github.com/AkMecha/felt Now, the problem is that during compilation, one of the source file is including some header file from the boost library. The chain of including goes on and reaches the memory.hpp file which is present in /usr/include/boost/config/no_tr1/ directory. This memory.hpp is in turn including the memory header file from the standard C++ library, but it can't find that memory header file. mcgregor_common_subgraphs usage/complexity/performance/runtime

Hello everyone, I'm new to Boost and today I tried to use the mcgregor_common_subgraphs functions but can't find an explanation why the function shows such bad performance when I use it. According to the documentation [1] the algorithm runs in O(V1 * V2) for the entire space with V being the number of vertices in the two graphs. So not great, but I'd expect that to run in reasonable time for graphs with less than 100 vertices. But in my case it doesn't, therefore any help appreciated whether I have some error or misconception on my side or whether this is expected performance. What I'm trying to achieve: I want to check whether two graphs have a common subgraph of size x. x depends on the size of smaller graph, I'm using a factor y for this with 0 < y < 1. With smaller values for x (e.g. x = 0.7 * V1) the example returns very fast, which makes sense since a smaller part of the search space needs to be explored. Testing and faking ASIO I/O objects

How is people around here testing code which uses ASIO? I have found some attempts online, but they seems to store the completion handlers into a vector of std::function and post them through std::bind, so possibly using the wrong executor, etc. There is any good set of ASIO I/O object fakes available?

Hi, how get an 'user' API for the boost.test like this: testsuite_xyz -- --help or even testsuite_xyz -- --save-path=/foo to get the user aspects. I know I can get the args by int argc{ framework::master_test_suite().argc }; char** argv{ framework::master_test_suite().argv }; Further, at test/include/boost/test/utils/runtime/cla/parser.hpp are some utils used by boost.test self. The goal is to check the proper working of a parser by checking success as such and compare the result with a "expected" data (string) vector. In case of parse error, I want to write the captured cout/cerr by boost.test into a file. In case of compare error the parsed result also shall be written to a file. [signals2] Warn unused result

Hi, I am using boost::signals2 library for event callback mechanism. The event register callback function returns a boost::signals2::scope_connection object for optional disconnect by the function registering itself. I want to mandate using the returns result (scoped_connection) object by the user. So, I use the gcc attribute "__attribute__( ( warn_unused_result ) )" with the function. The problem is that the compiler does not warn for unused result. Any ideas, why would this happen? I am using Linux with g++ 4.8.4 and c++11 is enabled. Setting cxxflags for intel compiler

Hi, in order to compile boost I need to tell the intel compiler which gcc version to use. I am trying to achive this with a user-config.jam using intel-linux : icpc : <cxxflags> -gcc-name=gcc-7 -gxx-name=g++-7 ; But none of the flags appear in the compile log. Where is the Wave Driver in Boost 1.86?

I recently tried to recompile an old version of the Wave Driver using the latest version of Boost::Wave and there were many cryptic warnings and errors. So, I figured I'd just upgrade to the latest copy of the source, only I cannot find it in the latest Boost::Wave, despite the documentation still referring to it. Nor does there appear to be an already-compiled tool supplied with the distro versions of Boost. Why I had to use-D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 to get a Boost.Test unit test to build and run

This is in the nature of a question, I am wondering *why* I had to use the -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 setting. This development is happening on Centos 7, where the system gcc/g++ is 4.8.5. So I recently built and installed gcc/g++ 8.2.0 from source, because I like Linux and prefer to try out C++17 stuff there rather than using a recent Visual Studio. That's just background. In any case I built the Boost Test module with ./b2 cxxflags="-stdlib=libc++ -std=c++14" linkflags="-stdlib=libc++ -std=c++14" going off suggestions I found. No evident problems there. After the install, among other things I end up with /usr/local/lib/libboost_unit_test_framework.so Now, I attempted to build a unit test with g++ -std=c++14 DocumentTest.cpp ../src/Document.cpp -I../include -L/usr/local/include -DBOOST_TEST_DYN_LINK -lboost_unit_test_framework The linker complained about an undefined reference for boost::unit_test::ut_detail::normalize_test_case_name[abi:cxx11](boost::unit_test::basic_cstring<char const>) Using nm -D on the shared library I see that the proper export symbol is there. abi:cxx11 seemed to offer some indication as to the problem, which is why after some experimentation I found that adding -D_GLIBCXX_USE_CXX11_ABI=0 to the unit test build command did the trick. The resulting a.out executes just fine (purely for debugging I made sure the unit test had a C++14 feature). I thought I sort of understood the ABI change business, gcc 5.1 before and after, but I guess I don't. What do I need to do, perhaps at the stage of building a Boost shared library, to not have to use that flag? Thanks for any wisdom. Arved Sandstrom

On another machine (which only has VS2015 installed), the VS2015 Developer Command Prompt finds it at C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\8.1\bin\x86\mt.exe. I do have that same path and file on my PC, but it's not being found for some reason? Adding it to my PATH before running b2 doesn't help; I assume it's overriding this. It looks like the VS2015 Developer Prompt is putting C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\bin\x86 into my PATH, which exists but doesn't contain any tools. I managed to "fix" the VS2015 Developer Prompt by commenting out the line in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\Common7\Tools\vcvarsqueryregistry.bat" that looks for the Windows 10 SDK. (Thereby allowing it to find the 8.1 SDK, which contains mt.exe.) After deleting the build15 directory and adding --reconfigure to the b2 incantation above, this seems to have allowed Boost to compile as well, but I find the whole thing a bit troubling. Is there a better way to resolve this?

Any plans to fix C++11 nullptr issues?

When Clang is compiling C++11 code, there may be a warning (-Wzero-as-null-pointer-constant) when 0 or NULL is used instead of nullptr. I've seen these warnings from Smart Ptr and Tokenizer in particular, but I suppose it's all over. This is still the case in 1.68.0 beta 1.

Serialization and class versioning

Hi, I have an application that uses serialization for data storage/retrieval, based on Boost 1.67.0. I've implemented class versioning as per: https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_67_0/libs/serialization/doc/tutorial.html#v ersioning The overall archive stores a number of sub-classes, nested within the XML. However, I get a run-time exception thrown that I can't catch when one of my sub-classes (DisplayDefinition) returns from being read in. A bit of debugging found that the problem was caused by the class version number having a value of 0, whilst the file being read had a version number of 3 for the class in question. Hi, It seems that the development on boost::gil is starting again on boost 1.68, and I have an advise: I think boost::gil would strongly benefits on using constexpr in the code, it would make a lot of things statically resolved. Hi all, I want to design a parser that can populate two maps while parsing. They have a slightly different values (key is a string in both cases), but I didn't see an example where this was done. Hence I'm not even sure this is possible? Would be easier, otherwise I need to add another check to see what kind of value is populated before I insert it inside my maps? Boost Spirit X3 and spaces

Hi, What is the best strategy to handle spaces with X3? The files I want to parse have sometimes spaces or tabs for separators, but I also need to scan number that have an attached suffix (so x3::double_ >> *x3::char_). If now I want to parse groups of strings, starting with a rule like const auto pin = x3::rule<class pin, std::string>() = x3::alpha >> *x3::char_; what is the best to create a vector of these? *pin or pin % ' ' and will the latter also handle tabs by default? Hi, I'm in the process of converting a project being compiled with msvc 2017 to use boost.dll. I've got a shared library loading and need to obtain and store a function in a class-level field. The function has the following typedef: typedef error_status_t (WINAPI *nvdaControllerTestIfRunningFunc)(void); I think my main issue is what shared_libary.Get<t> returns. Any help appreciated. Hi, Is it possible to read/write an image as JPEG from/into a memory buffer instead of a file? I found that reference which looks promising: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/16259659/read-a-jpeg-image-from-memory-… but grep -r jpeg_tag in boost/gil gives nothing (same with image_read_settings) and read_image has no documentation and not the same signature. Anyone knows something about that? F

Hey Boost, I am trying to build Boost, ideally in its entirety, with emscripten. I am using emscripten 1.38.8, and either Boost 1.67 or the 1.68.b1, and am on OSX 10.13. Both Boost versions fail. I bootstrapped as normal (`./bootstrap.sh`), and then invoke b2 to build. i want C++14, so invoke as ./b2 toolset=emscripten cxxflags=-std=c++14 I get this long message with the roadblock at the end: I am running on boost_1_54 (don't ask why but cpprestsdk only compiles on SLES12 with that boost version). Trying to track down a possible serialisation issue

Hi, I've been working on a bit of freeware on and off (which is probably my real issue). At some point my code began to crash when returning a deserialised object to calling code and I've now got some time to try and track down what's going on. One of my theories is that a change in Boost serialisation might be responsible. building on OS X with custom gcc version

All, I’m trying to get 1.65.1 compiled on OSX 10.13.5. I have gcc 8.1 installed and I’ve added it to user-config.jam in the home directory. When I run "bootstrap.sh —with-toolset=gcc" it uses the Darwin gcc toolset, if I try —with-toolset=gcc-8.1 I get an unknown toolset error. If I use the Darwin-based gcc version of b2 and try and build with gcc 8.1 I get this series of errors: error: No best alternative for libs/context/build/asm_sources. and also linker errors from an unknown option -h on ld. I’m assuming this is because b2 built with Darwin gcc doesn’t have the right options for gcc 8. Is there a way to force b2 to be built based on gcc 8 so it gets the assembly and linker options right? Boost.Beast includes CRLF in HTTP fields

Hello, It looks like HTTP response headers are saved with trailing CRLF in the message upon receiption after (async_)read. Since it usually does not add additional valuable information, would it be possible to remove them in next version of Boost.Beast? It will be more convenient as you don't need to trim them when you want to capture the field value. Regards, -- David

Summarizing the error, it appears that an enable_if in cmath (line 424: std::enable_if<std::is_arithmetic<_A1>::value, bool>::type) is preventing isnan from being defined for boost::numeric::interval<double> (at least in clang++). Am I doing something wrong or is there a work around? I realize that this might be more of a std::complex question than a boost question, but since it involves boost, I thought that I'd ask here. If I use the option '--report_level=no', then execution does complete fine. I followed through on some process of elimination and it seems to be related to using a fixture? Having no test body still causes the crash. It wasn't until I removed the fixture (and its usage in the body of the test) did the executable not crash. [asio] Second connection fails

Hello, I am using boost.asio to connect a self written host. The function below is called with acceptorRanks = {0, 1}. The first connection went well, but the second one fails (to 1). It is always the second with, e.g. when called with {1, 0}, connecting to 0 fails. I took the code out of context, changed some lines for clarity, I hope you can help me! The sockets seems to connect, i.e. there is no error, but the asio::write fails with "Bad file descriptor" Wireshark only shows traffic for the first connections, nothing at all the second (when filtered by port name). The connection is always on localhost. The host to wich I connect always takes on connection per process, that is way I think the problem is with the requester. I would be really thankful for any help what the problem could be. Best Thanks! If I initialize an io_service object and a socket object in my header file, how do I pass io_service to the socket as a parameter in my implementation file? operator<< for std::vector< boost::variant< type_a, type_b >>

Dear boost-savvy people, I fail to understand how I need to write a working ostream overload for a type I have. I've read the boost::variant documentation. As well as stackoverflow question: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/46343138/using-stdvectorboostvariant-wi… Still I fail to understand how to make it work for the type I have. In the code you can see parameter_t is an element in the employee_t. I need to keep this data structure this way. Attached is my single 30 line problem code. I do compile with gcc 5.1.0 with C++14 support. It doesn't compile. The important part of the compiler output might be: C:\dev\boost_1_67_0/boost/variant/detail/variant_io.hpp:64:14: error: no match for 'operator<<' (operand types are 'std::basic_ostream<char>' and 'const std::vector<boost::variant<int, double> >') out_ << operand; My overload is obviously wrong. Why do socket::receive() and socket::async_receive() have different return types?

This is also true for socket::send() <https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_58_0/doc/html/boost_asio/reference/basic_d…> and socket::async_send() <https://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_58_0/doc/html/boost_asio/reference/basic_d…> . Serialization over UDP

Hello everyone, I have no prior experience with Boost. I need to serialize an object and send it over UDP to a remote machine. I already have a completely functional serialization mechanism over TCP and I would like to convert it to UDP. Bug when using boost::optional with boost::program_options?

Before I spend too long tracking this down (I'm only seeing it in an Appveyor Windows build, since I do most of my work on Linux), I wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this issue. I'm trying to use boost::program_options to parse a command line arg and store it into a boost::optional, however I get a surprising compilation error[1]. This appears to have been introduced sometime between Boost 1.60 and 1.62 (Appveyor doesn't have Boost 1.61). I see that there were some significant changes to boost::optional between those revisions, so maybe that's the cause? The following test case *might* reproduce the issue, but sadly, rextester only has Boost 1.60, so it works there[2]. If it fails for someone with Boost 1.62+, then great! (Well, not "great", but you know what I mean.) Interestingly, it's not until Boost 1.65[3] that boost::program_options claims to support storing values into boost::optional; it's worked for me since long before that, possibly because I `#include <boost/optional/optional_io.hpp>`. If this isn't enough for others to help confirm this issue, that's ok; I'll try to get a Windows dev environment set up to provide more details in the coming week. I just wanted to send this out before I forgot about it... If it matters, the Appveyor build I'm seeing this with uses Visual Studio 2015 Update 3.
