shared_ptr with template class

I'm in the process of converting a large pile of legacy code which uses raw pointers to instead use boost::shared_ptr exclusively. I've got almost all of it converted and working, with one exception. Normally, given a type of Foo I define a smart pointer FooPtr, for example: class Foo; typedef boost::shared_ptr<Foo> FooPtr; But some code uses a templated type, for example: template<typename T> class Foo; Ideally, I'd use a templated typedef, for example: template<typename T> typedef boost::shared_ptr<Foo<T> > FooTPtr; but that is currently illegal in C++. Has anyone found a clean workaround? For now, I'll just do without a typedef in this case :)

Detect ICU support in Regex?

Pyste/Pyplusplus/Boost documentation problems

I say that for ALL users of pyste, pyplusplus is now mature enough to be useful as well as being actively developed. It can also do quite a few tricks pyste cannot.""" If this is really the case, I think the Boost documentation needs to say so. For example, the doc page <<http://www.boost.org/libs/python/pyste/>> does not give any warning that Pyste is essentially deprecated (which it apparently is, if the above quote is true). Further, as far as I can tell there are no clues at <<http://www.boost.org/libs/libraries.htm#Inter-language>> indicating that users might want to check out pyplusplus, whereas the official Boost.Python page <<http://www.boost.org/libs/python/doc/index.html>> explicity directs users to Pyste. The end result is that an innocent user who is new to integrating Python and C++ (like, um, say, me) could reasonably come away with the impression that the most state-of-the-art approach to use is Boost.Python+Pyste. As a side question, does anyone use Boost.Python *without* an automatic code generator such as Pyste or Pyplusplus? It does not seem like a practical thing to do--but maybe I'm missing something...? Retrieve state of random number generator?

Config problem / initial setup

Here's what will probably be a really easy question (hopefully it is not too far off topic). I'm trying to get Boost installed on my machine, but I haven't been able to get a working program yet. I downloaded the "bjam" program and the source for the libraries. Performing the 'bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" install' as recommended by the "Getting Started Guide" seemed to run smoothly. (and I can't find any logs in the build directory which which would tell me differently). So next I tried to compile an example program from Regex... http://www.boost.org/libs/regex/example/snippets/credit_card_example.cpp ...this initially failed with a message complaining about "boost/regex.hpp" not being found. So I added an additional include search path... g++ -I /usr/local/include/boost-1_33_1/ credit_card_example.cpp ...this works fine until the linker gets invoked... > /tmp/ccagNJn9.o(.gnu.linkonce.t._ZN5boost11regex_matchIN9__gnu_cxx17__ > : undefined reference to `boost::re_detail::perl_matcher<__gnu_cxx::__ > collect2: ld returned 1 exit status ...etc. So it looks like it can't find the libraries to link against. But my /usr/local/lib directory has all sorts of libboost* files, including libboost_regex-gcc.so and friends. I've tried a number of other g++ options including "-lboost", "-llibboost", "-llibboost_regex", and "-llibboost_regex-gcc". Any hints on what I might try to get things up and running? My system is Slackware Linux 9.1 and gcc 3.4.2. Thanks, Greg Buchholz

[Serialization] Many similar looking types

Hello, I have to serialize some classes that look like this : struct A { vector<Base*> v; Base* get(int i); }; struct B1: A { Derived1* get(int i); }; ... struct B1000 : A { Derived1000* get(int i); }; (well, not exactly 1000, but definitively more than a couple, and no, I cannot change this design). I would like not to add serialization code to all of thoses classes, just to the base class, since all those classes are almost the same. Is this possible ? If I do not define anything for Bn classes, I get some archive_exception::unregistered_class exception. Regards, -- Loïc

[test] How do you create test cases in a DLL

I have some internal (non-exported) classes in a DLL that I want to test. I'm trying to do this by exporting a testInternals() function that my tester application will add to it's test suite. The problem I'm having is that to use any of the BOOST_CHECK_??? etc macros I have to include the <boost/test/test_tools.hpp> file. This causes undefined symbol linker errors. Is there a way to do what I want to do?

I use filesystem::wifstream. Lately I've found that the cvs fstream.hpp causes a parse error.
