Hi all, I want to create a managed_shared_memory in exactly the size I needed. Therefore I do something like this: size = sizeof( common_managed_shared_memory ); size += sizeof( MyClassInSharedMem ); managed_shared_memory segment(create_only, "name", size ); MyClassInSharedMem allocates itself some memory by segment->allocate(). I added this also to the size, but get a boost::interprocess::bad_alloc exception on allocating this additional memory. Are there some magic bytes I forgot to add? Many thanks in advance Kai

Weird compilation error when using boost::geometry

Hi, I have implemented my own "point" as specified by the point concept http://www.boost.org/doc/libs/1_59_0/libs/geometry/doc/html/geometry/refere… When I use it along with boost::geometry::model::polygon/multi_polygon, GCC refuses to compile, tested on GCC 4.9/5.2. What's even more weird is that CLANG 3.6 would happy accept my code. BTW, the Point implementation is part of a large project, it difficult to replace it with boost::geometry::model::point. [MSM] What happens to MSM if guard returns `false`, mutable events and error recovery?

Hi *, I am currently reading through the MSM docs and have one question, what happens to MSM if guard returns `false`. Does the MSM enter an error state in orthogonal region (http://www.boost.org/doc/ libs/1_64_0/libs/msm/doc/HTML/ch03s02.html#d0e577)? Even internals page describes, what happens if guard returns `true`, but not a single word on `false` case. Regarding the const events: I am programming an MSM to proxy network traffic and once a message with data was received it'll be analysed and moved between different states. Message instances implement move semantics. Currently, the MSM has an initial state `ready` where the `message_in` event is handled. This event contains the message to be analysed. From my current understanding I either have to make message field in `message_in` event mutable or MSM needs to to support r-value references. Can somebody tell me what's going to happen if the action only accepts r-value reference to an event instance? [Intrusive] Call custom function after tree rotations

Hi, I'm trying to implement an interval tree based on boost::intrusive::rbtree. For such an interval tree, certain fixup operations must be run after a node rotation. Now, as far as I can see from the code (looking at rotate_* in bstree_algorithms), there is no way of "hooking into"[0] these methods, right? Am I missing something? What I need: After every operation that changes the parent-child-relationship of nodes I need to touch all involved nodes. At this point, I'm considering monkey-patching bstree_algorithms using some preprocessor directives, but that is bound to fail spectacularly. Any better ideas? [Interprocess] uint64 atomic

Hi, I am new to boost-interprocess. I am trying to store some of my data structures in shared memory using boost::interprocess. Each of my data structure(s) contain a bunch of counters (basically size_t values) updated atomically. In the traditional world, std::atomic supports atomic update for size_t. However, I came to know that boost::interprocess doesn't support atomic update for uint64. I've looked at pairing my counter with a lock for synchronization purposes. I've implemented it and it seems to work. However, the upgradable_mutex is consuming 144bytes while my counter is 8bytes(size_t) making it cost prohibitive. Alternatively, I could use one lock for all the counters of a class to spread the cost but that'd affect the performance and affect parallelism. I'd appreciate it if someone could offer any alternate suggestions. Thanks. Say I have an object a of type any<mpl::vector<Concept1,typeid_<>>,_self&> and an object b of type any<Concept2,T> where Concept1 is a subconcept of Concept2. Is it possible to make a refer to b rather than the object wrapped by b? I mean: any_cast<void*>(&a)==&b typeid_of(a)==typeid(b) A solution involving wrapping/copying b into some auxiliary entity would be acceptable too. This questin is obviously connected to the implementation of boost::any_collection, as Steven will undoubtedly have guessed. Thank you, Joaquín M López Muñoz

Compiling Boost 1.64.0 with Visual Studio 2017

Hi, Has anyone tried building Boost 1.64.0 with Visual Studio 2017 in “/std:c++latest” mode? I’m asking because I tried and the build generated a lot of errors and some of them are to do with things that have been removed in C++17, e.g. std::auto_ptr, etc. It seems that these need to be resolved soon especially when a lot of the compilers become C++17 compliant. Following are the environment: - Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64 bit - Python 2.7.13 - Visual Studio 2015 (v14.0) Following are the steps to the problem: (1) I downloaded boost_1_64_0-msvc-14.0-64.exe from https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__sourceforge.net_projec… . Since it is pre-compiled binary, I think there is no need to build Boost.Python manually. Note that it is for 64 bit build in VS2015 if I understand correctly. NEWBIE question: Undefined references: How do I find the library that resolves an undefined reference. For example, the output for the gcc linker running in MinGW shows: C:/boost/boost/asio/detail/impl/winsock_init.ipp:39: Undefined reference to `WSAStartup@8' I have googled the documentation a number of ways, but I cannot find the library that will resolve this error. I am sure that this is a common problem. Please point me to the documentation so I can fix this and the undefined references. Thanks!

[Move] unique_ptr with boost vector container (C++98)

I’m using boost::movelib::unique_ptr with a polymorphic container of type boost::container::vector and getting a compiler error that I can’t seem to figure out (see code sample and attached compiler output). Note, this error occurs when compiling without C++11 support w/ x86-64 gcc 4.9.3. When compiling w/ C++11 support (e.g. -std=c++11) the code compiles fine. Any ideas ? If we had only and explicit constructor from T the code will be much more uniform. Either you build it with a modified make_expected or with make_unexpected. In my opinion the implicit conversion from T to expected<T> is a mistake. 5. About the exception to throw std::experimental::expected throw bad_expected_access<E>. I adopted the design of optional and bad_optional_access We could have as well a bad_expected_access_base class as Outcome has. My question is why don't throw directly E? Some are requesting a way to get a specific exception from E, but either there is one exception that works for all and we can set it using some kind of trait or we need to add a trait parameter to expected to the the mapping :( Do we really want this to be configurable? 6. [Regex] Has build location changed between 1.34.1 and 1.64.0 ?

I've just added Boost Regex to a new project. It is the first time I've done that for quite a long time (several years) and I'm left wondering whether Regex's standard build location has been changed, or whether I've missed a detail in the instructions. The last one I did was Boost version 1.34.1, under Visual Studio 6. The one I have just done is Boost version 1.64.0, under Visual Studio 12, aka Visual Studio 2013. To build 1.34.1 (on VC6) I run "bjam --toolset=msvc --with-regex stage". This creates two folders - "bin.v2" and "stage". Bin.v2 is where all the intermediate files are written. Stage/lib is where the final outputs are written. There are a number of different ones built; for all the various static/dynamic, single/multi-threading, debug/release options. Because of the auto-link stuff I just #include <boost/regex.hpp> in my project, and because of the use of #pragma comments in boost, the Link pass picks up the correct library file-name, provided I have included $(BOOSTDIR)\stage\lib in the linker's list of folders to search. (%BOOSTDIR% being my chosen download/build location) To build 1.64.0 I've followed the current instructions. I ran "b2 regex", which built a dll, which is not what I want. I then ran "b2 regex link=static", which build the static lib I wanted. However, the lib is left in a folder a long way down from the bin.v2 folder, which is where I expected it to be. It's in bin.v2\libs\regex\build\msvc-12\debug\link-static\threading-multi. Hence, I need to know all the build settings to work out the folder name. On the file-name side this is all hidden from my by the auto-link system, which builds the lib file's name from the various option settings. Having the name built automatically but not the path leads me to suspect I've missed something.... So: Is there an instruction I've missed to get all the built products (dlls or libs) put in a common (not too deep) location ? (so the auto-link system will be sufficient to find it given just one linker folder location) Is there an instruction I've missed to get all the combinations (static/dynamic, single/multi-threading, debug/release) built ? [Test] Message from unexpected exceptions

Hi, Is there a way of configuring Boost.Test to display the message from unexpected exceptions? I’m asking because at the moment whenever an unexpected exception is encountered by Boost.Test, it displays the type of the exception but not the message that goes with it making it more difficult to track down where the exception came from. If apart from the type of the exception the exception message is included, it could quicken the resolution of the issue. Kind regards, Leo

Hi, I've tried to read the tutorial, but it is too long for my taste. I will try it later on :( A minor issue * "As inferred in the example code cases earlier, you can check if an |expected<T, E>| has an expected value via a simple test for boolean true or more explicitly via |.has_value()| before retrieving the value using |.value()|." This is not correct. It is correct for the de-reference operator, but .value() don't needs any check with .has_value(). Instead of some deviation, I would expect a report of all deviations and a rationale explaining why it is better to do this way. # "Types |T| and |E| cannot be constructible into one another. This is a fundamental design choice in basic_monad to significantly reduce compile times so it won't be fixed." * "Note though that |expected<void, void>| is permitted (which is legal in the LEWG proposal)." The question is if we want expected to differen from the optional interface. If we considered it a defect, I don't believe that we should remove comparison, but IMHO we should make the constructor from T explicit. I don't expect the committee to fix this for expected and let the issue for optional. We will see. # We don't implement |make_expected_from_call()| as we think it highly likely to be removed from the next version of the proposal due to it conferring little value. This is possible and the function can be implemented very easily. I can live with and without it. # Our |make_expected()| and |make_unexpected()| functions deviate significantly as we believe the LEWG ones to be defective in various ways. Boost.Outcome and the C++ standard proposals

And last a very draft paper I don't pretend to send to the standard meetings, at least not yet, about how FileSystem TS could be adapted to take in account the proposes status_value and expected classes. * DXXXX -*Refactoring FileSystem TS using **|expected|**or **|status_value|*||- https://github.com/viboes/std-make/blob/master/doc/proposal/expected/DXXXXR… This paper show that there is not silver bullet solution to reporting errors, but that making abstractions as status_value or expected makes the interface more clear, composable and readable (for me at least) than using out parameters error codes. The paper show also that wanting to have exception interfaces and non-exception interface forces to double the interface. Using expected could reduce it at the price of using .value(). I have an POC implementation in https://github.com/viboes/std-make/tree/master/include/experimental/fundame… Look for expected, functor, applicative, monad, monad_error folders for the implementation and std for the customization. My intention is to show that there is something on-going on the standard aside the expected proposal as requested by the committee. Issue with cross-compiling boost

Hello all, I am trying to cross-compile the boost libraries for an ARM based linux system. The system is an FX30 IoT gateway by Sierra Wireless. It comes with a dedicated, Eclipse based, development studio, which supplies the cross-compiler & a disk image with all the required headers & libraries to cross-compile to. However, I am not quite able to follow why this problem occurred on Ubuntu (with system boost library) when I was still linking against the precompiled library (version 1.58). Hello everybody, I am trying to build HPX (https://github.com/STEllAR-GROUP/hpx) which uses Boost under Cygwin and I bumped into an incompatibility issue between the class boost::asio::detail::winsock_init_base and the WinSocket-API exposed by Cygwin. The error summary: the types of variable members in winsock_init_base::data are long (defined in boost/asio/detail/winsock_init.hpp). These variable are passed to functions _InterlockedIncrement, _InterlockedExchange etc (called from boost/asio/detail/impl/winsock_init.ipp). But there are no functions defined in Cygwin (in headers in /usr/include/w32api) expecting a long parameter. Context and coroutine for ARM

I am trying to cross compile boost 1.63 for Raspberry Pi, i.e. for an ARM core. But the build fails for boost-coroutine and boost-context. Here is my build log http://sprunge.us/NVDd As far as I can see from development files in https://github.com/ boostorg/context/tree/develop/src/asm ARM is supported at least by boost-context. Is there anything I can do about or any progress for this issue? If not, is there an older version I should try? Regards

Using the (new) C++ standard library in boost::dll

The boost::dll depends on 4 different boost-libraries which all have counterparts in the C++17 standard library. Worse, two of them (system & filesystem) are not header-only libraries, so you need to link against these libraries. Is it possible and planned to use the standard library counterparts as plug in replacement for these boost dependencies in a future release? In my opinion this would improve the usability massively, especially when you already use this counterparts in the rest of your program. Best regards, Benjamin

Hi, I need to execute the 'stdbuf -oL -eL python scrypt.py' cmd but if I write the: auto p = boost::process::search_path("stdbuf -oL -eL python2"); boost::process::child c(p, "script.py"); c.wait(); I get the exception with 'execve failed: Permission denied' message. My question is, what should I change in my example for executing the 'stdbuf -oL -eL python2 scrypt.py' cmd? Hi, Is it necessary to call the timer.cancel() before timer.expires_from_now? I think it is not just unnecessary, it will be a bug to call the timer.cancel() before timer.expires_from_now, I think that will run the cancel if the previous timer is not expired, is it correct? Thank you

"Invalid handle" error trying to use boost::process

I'm trying to run a simple program with boost::process, with boost 1.64 I'm using Windows, and visual studio 2015. I'm just trying to run the supplied "async_cio.cpp" example: My program is: boost::asio::io_service ios; boost::asio::streambuf buffer; bp::child c( "cmd /c dir", bp::std_out > buffer, ios ); ios.run(); (I've changed if from launching "test.exe" to launching "cmd /c dir"). If I run this I get: Exception thrown at 0x49409D2A in ConsoleApplication3.exe: 0xC0000008: An invalid handle was specified. Running in the debugger, it is in the destructor of the async_pipe object, in "win_iocp_handle_service::close_for_destruction". I've tried various of the examples with varying degrees of success. But any time I seem to use an async_pipe, I seem to get an "invalid handle" exception when it is calling CloseHandle on the completion port handle. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

[Units] Units in unit tests

Hello all, please excuse the weird subject line. I have just introduced boost units as length quantity for vectors into my project here. What previously was: typedef boost::qvm::vec<double, 3> vec3; is now: typedef boost::units::quantity<length, double> qlength; typedef boost::qvm::vec<qlength, 3> vec3; Which seems to work OK so far, I'm not done testing. While converting all my unit tests I came to wonder is how this is best adopted. I have lots of lines like: vec3 v = get_some_value(); and then I test the individual component values like this: BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE(X(v), 42.0, 0.001); // check for length of 42 meters Now this would have to be rewritten to: BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE(X(v).value(), 42.0, 0.001); But doing this, I imply the length is in meters, right? Doesn't that defeat the purpose a little? I feel this would be better: BOOST_CHECK_CLOSE(X(v), 42.0 * meters, 0.001); but the Macro won't accept this as this is not a floating point type anymore. Does anybody have some hint as to how this is best addressed while still have maximum readability? All my best... Stephan

Hi Tina, When you build the boost libraries, is there a way to generate .lib files for them? Below, I have documented the steps I took to build the library. Please take a glance at it and let me know if I missed something that will allow me to obtain the .lib file. I cannot see your pictures (A non-text attachment was scrubbed...), so I can only guess what goes wrong. externing template instantiations of Boost.Multiprecision numbers

Hi Boost, I happily use Boost.Multiprecision inside a largely templated codebase, which involves the entirely-templated Eigen as well. My compile times are high. To gain insight into why compile time is so ridiculous, I used Templight <https://github.com/mikael-s-persson/templight> with Clang to query how many times my templates are instantiated, and how long they take. The answer was overwhelmingly that Boost.Multiprecision's number class is to blame, with 8264 instantiations of bmp::number<bmp::backends::mpft_float_backend<0,allocate_dynamic>, bmp::expression_template_option::et_on> 5052 of the same with the gmp_int backend, and 2689 for mpz_rational. I think the cure might be an extern template declaration on these three types, but where is the correct place to do this? In a header *I* have written which provides a few extensions / additions I needed? Or do I need to patch my install of BMP and put it there? As a follow-up, I have a cycle of instantiations I believe, but do not yet know, are expression templates. Can I extern a few common instantiations, and let the compiler do the rest? Any help or techniques are greatly appreciated. Especially as I (slowly) move toward applying expression templates to complex multiprecision arithmetic, too. Hi Boost Users, I need the Boost Serialization Library in order to use a MATLAB make file. The make file is looking for a static library file named either boost_serialization.lib or libboost_serialization.lib. However, when I built the serialization library, I got a lot of object files and rsp files rather than a .lib file. Do you know how to create the .lib file? I am not sure if it matters, but I am using a Windows computer. When you build the boost libraries, is there a way to generate .lib files for them? Below, I have documented the steps I took to build the library. Please take a glance at it and let me know if I missed something that will allow me to obtain the .lib file. 1. [BGL] null edge descriptor

Hi, I'm using Boost Graph Library (BGL), and I need a null edge. For years I was using G::edge_descriptor(), i.e., a default-constructed edge descriptor, and the code was working. However, I wonder if it is correct. Are all default-constructed edges equal? If I get a default-constructed edge descriptor e1 at some point in code, and another default-constructed edge descriptor e2 at some other point in code, will there descriptors always equal, i.e., will e1 == e2 always hold? Is it guaranteed that a default-constructed edge does not refer to an existing edge in a graph? Best, Irek
