Hi all, I want to create a managed_shared_memory in exactly the size I needed. Therefore I do something like this: size = sizeof( common_managed_shared_memory ); size += sizeof( MyClassInSharedMem ); managed_shared_memory segment(create_only, "name", size ); MyClassInSharedMem allocates itself some memory by segment->allocate(). I added this also to the size, but get a boost::interprocess::bad_alloc exception on allocating this additional memory. Are there some magic bytes I forgot to add? Many thanks in advance Kai

[Thread] Read-write locks

I'm trying to create a standard read/write lock using Boost Threads, and I'm having a bit of difficulty mapping the Boost concepts onto the usual ones. A read/write lock should have several states: Locked for reading (multiple threads may lock at once), locked for writing (only one thread may lock, and no threads may be locked for reading at the same time), and unlocked. Ideally it would be nice if an RWL which is locked for reading may temporarily upgrade to locked for writing, then return to the locked for reading state. Boost supports several relevant notions of locking: shared locking, upgrade locking, and exclusive locking. This to me is a confusing distinction. In particular, a shared_mutex seems appropriate as the basis for a RWL, but is lock_upgrade() the equivalent of a write lock and lock_shared the equivalent of a read lock? This is unclear. If "upgrade locking" is not the same as "exclusive locking", then is an upgrade lock actually exclusive? Could someone please clarify this.

[Statechart] How to decide between post_event and process_event atrun time ?

Hi, I have a method in which I want to post/process an event. The thing is, this method can be called from outside the state machine (so I need to call process_event), or indirectly by a reaction of the state machine (in this case I must call post_event since process_event is not reentrant). I don't want to write 2 distinct methods to do this (one that calls post, and the other process), I would much rather prefer adding a 'if' in my method that tells me if I have to call process_event or post_event (if I'm being called indirectly by the state machine or not). Is there a way to do this with statechart ? regards, Philippe

Problems calling make_reversed_graph in a call to dijkstra from version 1.48

I am having some problems with some code, that works just fine using boost version 1.46, but cannot compile using version 1.48 and higher. [asio] resolver::cancel() problem

In my application (and a separate test program) it seems as though the cancel() function on the resolver does not work as intended. For async resolves, the cancel functionality should abort them immediately and pass an 'operation aborted' error code to the callback handler. In my tests, I will resolve an invalid domain (this causes the resolve to take a few seconds, to demonstrate the problem), sleep for 100ms, then call cancel on the resolver object. No cancelling actually occurs, and the callback is simply triggered after a few seconds with a "No host found" error code, not the expected operation aborted. Has anyone experienced this before, or know how I might be using the resolver incorrectly?

According to Boost document, Boost.Test can only be statically linked. Boost.Threads can only be dynamically linked. Then what boost_unit_test_framework-vc100-mt-1_53.lib for? Is it for dynamically linked dll? what libboost_thread-vc100-mt-1_53.lib for? [Test] Where to learn about boost::itest::mock_object?

Hi, I'm looking for a simple mocking library to use together with Boost.Test. There is Turtle (aka Boost.Mock) and googlemock. During retrospection of the big thread on Boost.Test future [1], I found this curious post by Gennadiy [2] about mock_object. I had no idea such facility lives in Boost.Test and it looks it's been there for very long time. I can't find any documentation about mock_oboject, only a couple of examples. So, I have a few questions: Is the mock_object an internal feature or is it dedicated (and ready) to use by Boost.Test users? What are basic features of this mocking facility? How does it compare to Turtle or googlemock? Hi, We need to test a function which reads a "record" from a binary file. We want to compare the buffer with the "record" in input file.We know the offset of the record in input file. [boost.test] How to register custom exception for auto test?

Hi, I'm using the test library of boost 1.49.0 for my unit tests. It works fine so fare, but if my program throws an error, I get the default error message unknown location(0): fatal error in "excption1_test": unknown type, witch hides the original error message. I tried to register an error translator, but without success. Fwd: support for bjam projects in IDE

Hi, I will have to work on bjam based project (rather big). I normally use QT Creator for programming and work with cmake based project. I could't find any hint how to set up an bjam project to work with QT neither information about any IDE which supports bjam. Do boost developer use vim and debug using gdb only? Actually the other guys on the project wrote some python scripts which parse bjam output to generated vcproj files :-@ I would be happy to hear from someone who are happy using bjam with qtcreator or any other IDE for larger projects and how to set this up. It is not always but frequent. I am running a threadpool by asking multiple std::threads to execute io_service::run() which never quits until io_service::stop() is called. The data given by the server is almost never more than 5MB. As you see in the code, for any error I call stop() which shuts down the connection gracefully. <Q> *Is there something wrong I'm doing because I see no reason for EOF error. Why should the server close/shutdown the connection?* The code does not do that explicitly. Anyway it is random - out of 10 times maybe 5 are successful reads and 5 become EOF's and I have to restart my client executable to connect again in each of those cases. [chrono] float-based milliseconds?

Hello, Or any of the chrono-steady-clock-based time units... I am noticing some what appear to be rounding errors outputting resulting millisecond values using the boost::chrono::milliseconds(x). It's a design-decision, most if not all of our floating-point values are single-precision-float, don't need to be double-precision-float. When we output the milliseconds(x).count() values, however, what I am finding is that the values are sometimes inaccurate, the same value in 3.0, for instance, output as 2.99995, stuff like this. Is there a way to tell milliseconds what precision floating point it is? float or double? We are targeting ARM, BTW, without hardware floating point support, which is the main reason, I'd like to keep things single-precision float, if at all possible. Thank you... Regards, Michael Powell

A few months ago I downloaded 'boost_1_54_0.zip' which I probably obtained from Sourceforge:- http://sourceforge.net/projects/boost/files/boost/1.54.0/ I'm using libboost with Visual C++ 8 and up to now the only things I've needed from it are 'boost::regex' and 'boost::shared_ptr'. However I'm now building a 3rd party library which seems to want to link to the above library (libboost_thread-vc80-mt-1_54.lib). I'm not sure whether it's a static library or the symbols library for a DLL. Either way, the zip file I downloaded doesn't seem to contain it (nor any other libs or DLLs AFAICT). Q1) Is there some other web site I need to visit in order to get the pre-built binaries? Q2) I know from past experience that pre-built boost binaries sometimes require quite obscure versions of the MSVC runtime. That was the case with boost::regex so after a bit of advice from this mailing list, I ended up making a VC project and building it myself. I don't mind doing the same thing for boost::thread - but I wondered if there was already a suitable project available somewhere? I don't want to re-invent the wheel if a VC project already exists! Hey guys! I have been using Boost inside a Visual C++ CUDA project. I'm using "regex.hpp" inside a ".cu" file and it works fine including it this way: "#include < boost / regex.hpp >". Now, I need to use "abs.hpp", which I'm including this way: "#include < boost / ratio / detail / mpl / abs.hpp >" and it fails while compiling. I'm using Windows 8 64-bits, Visual Studio 2012, Boost 1.53.0 and CUDA 5.5. I get this error only by putting this in my code: "#include < boost / ratio / detail / mpl / abs.hpp >" without using more instructions related with Boost. I have several ".cpp" and ".cu" files in my project. If I put that include in a ".cpp" file, it compiles fine. If I put that include in a ".cu", this error appear: 1>C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\VC\include\boost/ratio/detail/mpl/abs.hpp(68): error C2675: unary '-' : 'T' does not define this operator or a conversion to a type acceptable to the predefined operator Thanks for any help you can provide and sorry for my English, it's not my native language!

I'm new to boost, so I don't understand everything, be kind please ;) I'm working on a piece of code that use boost::asio with a ba::ip::udp::socket the code is sending data using 2 buffers stored in a boost::array my work is to write the receiver and my question is : how many udp packets will be sent? 1? 2? if multiple packets are sent, how does boost::asio will re-order them on reception? if one packet is sent, and if on reception I use another scatter gather list as above (but with mutable buffers) how does boost know the size of the 2 buffers? thanks and regards MALET Jean-Luc >

[posix_time] ARM clock scaling issue

Hello, I am using the posix_time ptime interface to gauge clock times, universal time (Utc), and do date/time math, subtracting for durations type thing. What I am finding is that the accuracy seems to be fast. By how much I don't know, whether that's by a factor of what, or what not, I do not know. We are encountering this on an ARM platform. Has anyone else experience this? If so what can we do to workaround it? Assuming we stick with the Boost API to comprehend date/time, duration, our stopwatch abstraction, elapsed-timer, and so on. Meta State Machine, wayward transition

Hello, I have a simple state machine, that uses only standard rows and no internal transitions, to which I am sending events that are clearly in the transition table for the state that the machine is in, yet the no_transition handler is running for this particular event. I have not yet been able to discover any reasons for a compiling transition table to fail to process an event that is listed in the row against the source state. Have I missed something fundamental? Hi all, I'm currently working on a large software project having an unchangeable dependency on boost 1.33, but I would like to use functionality from a more up-to-date version of the library (say 1.54). Can it be done? If so, how ? One of the things we aim to achieve is use the std::hash and unoredered_map from boost 1.54, while also using othe containers from boost 1.33. Since boost if mostly header only and template-based, using an intermediary interface doesn't work well. Any ideas ? Are we better off using another library instead of boost to avoid conflicts ? Following the standard recipe for a severity logger, I failed to get a logger configured by parsing a settings file to property invoke the operator<< for the severity. I tested by creating two logs, one by parsing and one by explicit construction (attached). Hello, I was recently tasked with installing boost binaries under windows. I used this command: C:\boost_1_49_0>b2 --build-dir=\boost-build toolset=gcc --build-type=complete stage --prefix=c:\boost-prefix\ install I was expecting the directory c:\boost-prefix to contain boost header and library files; however, that directory contained no files whatsoever. [asio] Infinite loops

I have found that when (ab)using asio in a particular way, it causes a hang in my app, which I think is caused by an infinite loop in asio. I'll state up front that the usage is pretty underhanded, so I may not get much sympathy here :) But it also seems reasonable to not hang. The hang happens only on the two linux platforms I tested, which were centos 5.9 and 6.4. I built it on win7 and mingw 4.6.3 (with slight code changes), and it doesn't hang. The simplified test app demonstrating the hang is pasted at the bottom of this email. I basically just wanted an API to smooth over platform network API differences and also give me a nice iostream class backed by a socket. So there's none of the fancy proactor stuff. There is a need to "reset" the app after socket connections have been established, and one thread is blocked on a socket read. So I needed a way to unblock the thread. Closing the socket seemed like a reasonable way to do it, but I found that simply calling a close() method from a different thread doesn't work; it causes race conditions and crashes, since asio classes seem not to be thread-safe. So I got more devious, and decided to just grab the raw handle and call close() directly on it. That's the underhanded part. I thought asio would figure out that the socket's no longer valid, and propagate an error up to the caller, thus unblocking the thread. But it doesn't, the thread just stays blocked. After doing some gdb tracing, it looked to me like asio is repeatedly polling the socket with epoll/select (I tried the latter by defining BOOST_ASIO_DISABLE_EPOLL) and a timeout, and never breaking out of its loop even though the socket is no longer valid. [units] "Simple" conversion from Kelvin to Celsius

Hello, It's been a couple of years since I've done any work with Boost.Units, and I am finding that I want to make a dimensionally-safe conversion from Kelvin to Celsius. I've got an I2C controller that reports in Kelvin, but I want to report it to the end-user in Celsius. The examples I am finding seem to "almost" fit the bill, but I am having a difficult time extrapolating a sane conversion. First, would help if I understood what the Boost.Units SI (my assumed base-system) base-temperature units were. I gather Fahrenheit? Or is it indeed Kelvin? I could be mistaken. Thank you... Trouble building 1.5.4 on OS X 10.6

Hi, I'm having trouble building 1.5.4 on OS X 10.6 for Intel only Universal builds (32 and 64 bit). This is my command line for b2: ./b2 macosx-version=10.6 macosx-version-min=10.6 threading=multi architecture=x86 address-model=32_64 I've also tried a simpler command line just specifying the architecture and address model, same results. Originally I was having trouble building all the libraries, in particular the thread lib wasn't building. Now mysteriously it is. However the libraries are being built with the ppc and ppc64 architectures as well as i386 and x86_64, which doesn't seem right given the options I'm specifying. You can see the unwanted archs in the build lines too, for example: "g++-4.0" -ftemplate-depth-128 -arch x86_64 -arch i386 -arch ppc64 -arch ppc -O3 -finline-functions -Wno-inline -Wall -gdwarf-2 -fexceptions -Wno-long-double -isysroot /Developer/SDKs/MacOSX10.6.sdk -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 -arch i386 -arch x86_64 -DBOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 -DNDEBUG -I"." -c -o "bin.v2/libs/context/build/darwin-4.0/release/address-model-32_64/architecture-x86/link-static/macosx-version-min-10.6/macosx-version-10.6/threading-multi/unsupported.o" "libs/context/src/unsupported.cpp" There are 4 arch flags near the start for x86_64, i386, ppc64 and ppc. There are also two more for x86_64 and i386 further on, which I assume are the ones the darwin.jam file has added based on my options passed to b2. I'm guessing these build lines are only being shown when there's a problem as there certainly isn't one for every file, but I assume they're representative. Is there any method of retrieve the current severity level from a "boost::log::sources::severity_logger_mt<boost::log::trivial::severity_level>" logger. Attempting to build the 1.54.0 version of the thread library for ppc on Mac OS X 10.6.8, using Apple's GCC 4.0, I get this error: boost_1_54_0/boost/atomic/detail/gcc-ppc.hpp: In member function 'bool boost::atomics::detail::base_atomic<T, int, 4u, Sign>::compare_exchange_strong(T&, T, boost::memory_order, boost::memory_order) volatile [with T = unsigned int, bool Sign = false]': /Volumes/Home/Mercurial/boost_1_54_0/boost/atomic/detail/gcc-ppc.hpp:1190: error: impossible constraint in 'asm' If I use GCC 4.2, I don't get the error. I have some template code that needs slightly different behavior when it is instantiated with exact types like int or boost::rational rather than when it is instantiated with floating point types. The compile-time test depends on std::numeric_limits<T>::is_exact. I was surprised when this came back false for boost::rational until I found that std::numeric_limits<boost::rational<long>>::is_specialized is false. Shouldn't boost::rational specialize numeric_limits? I'm using boost 1.54.0 with clang: Apple LLVM version 4.2 (clang-425.0.28) (based on LLVM 3.2svn) compiling for C++1.

Hello, I have a Windows C++ application that uses Boost 1_48 and OpenSSL 0.9.
