Hi all, I want to create a managed_shared_memory in exactly the size I needed. Therefore I do something like this: size = sizeof( common_managed_shared_memory ); size += sizeof( MyClassInSharedMem ); managed_shared_memory segment(create_only, "name", size ); MyClassInSharedMem allocates itself some memory by segment->allocate(). I added this also to the size, but get a boost::interprocess::bad_alloc exception on allocating this additional memory. Are there some magic bytes I forgot to add? Many thanks in advance Kai

[Thread] Read-write locks

I'm trying to create a standard read/write lock using Boost Threads, and I'm having a bit of difficulty mapping the Boost concepts onto the usual ones. A read/write lock should have several states: Locked for reading (multiple threads may lock at once), locked for writing (only one thread may lock, and no threads may be locked for reading at the same time), and unlocked. Ideally it would be nice if an RWL which is locked for reading may temporarily upgrade to locked for writing, then return to the locked for reading state. Boost supports several relevant notions of locking: shared locking, upgrade locking, and exclusive locking. This to me is a confusing distinction. In particular, a shared_mutex seems appropriate as the basis for a RWL, but is lock_upgrade() the equivalent of a write lock and lock_shared the equivalent of a read lock? This is unclear. If "upgrade locking" is not the same as "exclusive locking", then is an upgrade lock actually exclusive? Could someone please clarify this.

[Statechart] How to decide between post_event and process_event atrun time ?

Hi, I have a method in which I want to post/process an event. The thing is, this method can be called from outside the state machine (so I need to call process_event), or indirectly by a reaction of the state machine (in this case I must call post_event since process_event is not reentrant). I don't want to write 2 distinct methods to do this (one that calls post, and the other process), I would much rather prefer adding a 'if' in my method that tells me if I have to call process_event or post_event (if I'm being called indirectly by the state machine or not). Is there a way to do this with statechart ? regards, Philippe

[asio] resolver::cancel() problem

In my application (and a separate test program) it seems as though the cancel() function on the resolver does not work as intended. For async resolves, the cancel functionality should abort them immediately and pass an 'operation aborted' error code to the callback handler. In my tests, I will resolve an invalid domain (this causes the resolve to take a few seconds, to demonstrate the problem), sleep for 100ms, then call cancel on the resolver object. No cancelling actually occurs, and the callback is simply triggered after a few seconds with a "No host found" error code, not the expected operation aborted. Has anyone experienced this before, or know how I might be using the resolver incorrectly?

Hi, I can't find how to do this pretty basic thing : having a function instead of a field to compute the cost of edges for various path finding algorithms. I couldn't find the answer in the documentation and Google was of no help. Did I miss something obvious ? can't get first example in boost tutorial to work

I'm trying to install boost on mac osx 10.4.7. [Range] insert algorithm fails if target is a map

The title says it all really. The failure occurs because the insert algorithm expects the container to provide a 3-arg insert of the form container.insert( position, begin, end ); whereas map's, multimap's and set's insert method only takes two arguments... map.insert( begin, end ); Is this limitation by design? It would be easy to provide specialisations for maps, mmaps and sets, but that would not be a completely general solution. - Rob.

Hi, I like to collects some stats. There are several data slices where I can partially/separated collect them (each of them). Finaly I like to combine these stats to a single one to get summarized informations. How to? May this work: accumulator_set<..> acc1; accumulator_set<..> acc2; ... accumulator_set<..> acc_all; ... acc1(42); ... acc_all += acc1; ... acc_all += acc2; Because did not found informations about. Hi! IMHO the behaviour of operator= for multi_array is a little bit broken. A lot of preconditions required: template <typename ConstMultiArray> multi_array_ref& operator=(const ConstMultiArray& other) { [...] // make sure the dimensions agree assert(other.num_dimensions() == this->num_dimensions()); assert(std::equal(other.shape(),other.shape()+this->num_dimensions(), this->shape())); Besides the fact that I get mad about asserts instead of exceptions (please change this to a way users may choose) why do we have such an odd behaviour here? >From page 1, line 3 of the docs I cite: "The interface design is in line with the precedent set by the C++ Standard Library containers" - this is not true for operator=, since std::<container>::operator= works fine for me all the time _without_ any resize. Could we please change the behaviour of multi_array::operator= to take care of resize where in need to? IMHO operator= should result in a true copy ignoring previous state. Markus

Hi -- I'm trying to learn to develop properly with C++ and Boost, and to that end am learning along with Boost.Test, as I'm a BDD coder in another language (Ruby) in my day job. I'm at the point, now, where my tests could really benefit from a mocking framework. There doesn't appear to be one in Boost (not documented, at least), so I wondered if anyone on the list could recommend a mocking framework that they use that works well with Boost.Test? Any and all advice gratefully received, Doug.

[multi_array] How to specify degenerate at runtime?

Greetings to Boosters, I have a 3D multi_array and I would like to make 2D slices using dimensions specified at runtime. I know the index of degenerate dimension and an index of slice, that I want to extract in that degenerate dimension. Currently the ugly workaround looks like that: if (0 == degenerate_dimension) { Slice slice = input_array[boost::indices[slice_index][range()][range()]]; } else if (1 == degenerate_dimension) { Slice slice = input_array[boost::indices[range()][slice_index][range()]]; } else if (2 == degenerate_dimension) { Slice slice = input_array[boost::indices[range()][range()][slice_index]]; } Is there a more beautiful way to construct index_gen object? Something like that: var slicer; for(int i = 0; i < 3; ++i) { if (degenerate_dimension == i) slicer = boost::indices[slice_index]; else slicer = boost::indices[range()]; } Slice slice = input_array[slicer]; It seems each subsequent call to boost::indices::operator[] returns a different type depending on the dimensionality, so there's no way to use a single variable, that can hold the temporary index_gen object.

[program_options] Limited multitoken

Hello, I'm working on a personal project. Everything works using my own options processing function, but I am having a hard time implementing one specific aspect of my option processing code using the Boost program_options library. My program has a flag (-j) which takes in two doubles as arguments. Currently, I can invoke my program like so: ./foo -j 1.0 2.0 3 where 3 is treated like a positional. Because the -j option must consume several tokens, it seemed natural that I should use multitoken, like so: vector<double> v; po::options_description desc("Allowed options"); desc.add_options() ("jingle,j", po::value<vector<double> >(&v)->multitoken(), "Test thing"); But this causes positional arguments to get eaten up and added to v when -j is the last flag option. So, in my example, v would contain 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0. I suppose I am looking for some way to indicate that the -j flag consumes exactly two tokens. I've looked over the documentation on the Boost website, but I couldn't find anything about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, -Brad

problems with C++ integer types

I'm very confused about a number of things related to C++ standard and boost libraries dealing with numeric types. Here are a few things that I'm not getting. a) The standard says in section 18.3.2.1 "Specializations shall be provided for each arithmetic type, both floating point and integer, including bool. The member is_specialized shall be true for all such specializations of numeric_limits." ... "Non-arithmetic standard types, such as complex<T> (26.4.2), shall not have specializations." and it section 18.3.2.4 numeric_limits members static constexpr bool is_bounded; "True if the set of values representable by the type is finite. [ Note: All built-in types are bounded. This member would be false for arbitrary precision types.-end note ]" So the question is: if one makes a "numeric type" like std::complex (or safe integer which I'm interested in right now). Should one define a specialization for this new type? The working is pretty specific, but then I can't see why "is_bounded" is in there since all built-in arithmetic types are bounded. Oh I see this now: Required by LIA-1. b) boost/type_traits/is_integral.hpp This file just specializes each arithmetic type supported by the implementation. question:Why isn't it just implemented in terms of numeric limits so that every thing is always consistent and never "out of sync" It's implementation returns true for only the built in types so it seems to me it should be repeating what ever happens to already be in numeric_types. c) my real interest is to implement a type "safe_integer" which can be used anywhere an integer is used but will trap errors which occur in the course of implicit conversions and assignements. If I don't specialize numeric_limits for my new "safe_integer" certain type_traits like is_signed won't work for it. If I do - them I"m out of sync with is_integral.hpp and likely out of conformance with the standard - though I'm not sure what the implications of that might be. I'm aware that there is related work going on here - bigint and arbitrary length integers. How do the authors of these libraries plan to address this. There are other cases applications where this would also come up such as modular integer<modulus> , safe_integer_range<max, min> and who know what else. We want the union of datas, so that, if a date is present in at least 1, then the it should be present in the union. For those histodatas that don't have the date, it should simply duplicate the last available date for that histodata. . begin() on the set will return the earliest date available for all histodatas .end () will return the "one-after-last" last being the last date available in all histodatas. I'm not quite sure how to implement such an iterator. boost::zip_iterator over the underlying histodatas, but how to add to that the union part? only a const version of this union iterator is required, no writing needed.
