Hi, I’m building Boost 1.47.0 for Windows with VS 2010 using the following commands: .\bootstrap.bat .\b2 -sZLIB_SOURCE=c:\zlib-1.2.5 -sBZIP2_SOURCE=c:\bzip2-1.0.6 link=static,shared runtime-link=shared address-model=32 variant=release install 2>&1 | tee libwin32.log The resulting Boost\lib directory contains the following files: boost_bzip2-vc100-mt-1_47.dll boost_bzip2-vc100-mt-1_47.lib libboost_bzip2-vc100-mt-1_47.lib boost_zlib-vc100-mt-1_47.dll boost_zlib-vc100-mt-1_47.lib libboost_zlib-vc100-mt-1_47.lib I created test applications to use the shared ZLIB and BZIP2 libraries which means I had to link with the corresponding import libraries. I discovered that the test application for the ZLIB library is able to execute correctly. However, the test application for the BZIP2 library fails because it is looking for LIBBZ2.DLL instead of boost_bzip2-vc100-mt-1_47.dll. I used dumpbin.exe to check the contents of the BZIP2 import library and it is definitely referring to LIBBZ2.DLL. I tried to locate the issue in the JAM files but since I’m a newbie with JAM files I couldn’t locate what is causing this issue. At the moment, my workaround is simply creating a copy of boost_bzip2-vc100-mt-1_47.dll as LIBBZ2.DLL although ideally this shouldn’t be necessary. Can this problem be fixed in the next release of the Boost libraries. Do I need to raise a bug for this? Kind regards, Leo

[boost::thread] can not link on open suse

Hi All, I have downloaded 1.4.8 on a new machine running suse 12.1 Kde, and built it using bjam install option. Now I have a very simple threading program as follows #include <boost/thread.hpp> #include <iostream> void func() { for(int i = 0; i < 10; ++i ) std::cout<<i<<std::endl; } int main () { boost::thread th0(func); th0.join(); return 0; } when I try to compile it using this command g++ -static -I./Built_Boost_1.4.8.0/include -L./Built_Boost_1.4.8.0/lib/ boostThreadTest.cpp -lboost_thread -lpthread -o threadTest I get following error /usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.6/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lpthread /usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.6/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lm /usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.6/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lc collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I have searched for libpthread.a, but can not find it in my system. although I can see these /lib/libpthread.so /usr/include/pthread.h also if I remove -lpthread from build command, I still get the last two errors i-e /usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.6/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lm /usr/lib/gcc/i586-suse-linux/4.6/../../../../i586-suse-linux/bin/ld: cannot find -lc collect2: ld returned 1 exit status So question is, do I need libpthread ? ( from my past experience I think I do, but not sure). if yes, then how can I get it, and if not, then how can I get this program to compile. Any help will be appreciated. Kaz

OSX Framework

Hello, I'm using Boost for a long time and create my package with bjam. Is there an option to create an OSX framework? OSX can handle libraries and headers in a special directory structure under eg /Library/Framework, can I build this structure with bjam or should I create it myself? Thanks Phil

[Units] Require help troubleshooting a template error with linear_algebra.hpp

In order to understand what I am doing I am trying to setup a boost unit system where length is in kilometers, angle is in degrees and time is in minutes. I would like to have the ability to enter automatically convert angles from degrees to radians. In addition I am attemping to make the angle types I use to be dimensionless. Hi Im use boost library and during the compilation on debbug mode I satarted the following warnings: 1386 IntelliSense: #error directive: "Macro BOOST_LIB_NAME not set (internal error)" c:\boost_1_47_0\boost_1_47_0\boost\config\auto_link.hpp 102 1387 IntelliSense: #error directive: "Incompatible build options" c:\boost_1_47_0\boost_1_47_0\boost\config\auto_link.hpp 111 Is this a known issue? I apologize if this question is asked frequently by noobs. Essentially, the boost functions are not recognized. I installed the prebuilt boost package on ubuntu (ostensibly 1.43), and wonder if it's working correctly. Hi, I am writing my first boost program and having trouble with the compiler warning against boost 1.44.0. Is there any way to get rid of those warnings so I can focus on real warnings in my code ? I am trying to upgrade my code from filesystem v2 to v3. I have in some paths constructed from a string starting with "//:". This was to ensure that the path was interpreted as native path in v2. It seems that this option disappeared from v3 but this change is not documented (at least I have not found the documentation for it). Hi, I've run into a bit of a funny one and I'm not sure if I'm missing something or whether I've encountered a bug. My idea was to load the memory mapped file in read/write mode and then decrypt the file content in-place (to avoid copying the entire file content). However, this will save a decrypted file :-( Is there any way to avoid the file being saved after in-memory manipulation? -Thorsten

[GIL] Array to image

Hi All, Can anyone point me in the right directions for copying or assigning an array in memory to an image? I'm reading an frame out of an AVI file using Microsoft's vfw32.lib/vfw.h and the function that grabs the frame returns a pointer to a bitmap in memory, like this: BYTE* pDIB = (BYTE*) AVIStreamGetFrame(pFrame, index); And I need to transfer that information into an image. I have extracted the bitmap header and have a pointer to the first pixel, so I suppose I could iterate over each pixel and channel and populate the image by hand, but I imagine there is a better way. In boost 1.47.0 filesystem v3, boost::filesystem::absolute only appends the relative path to base path. Boost.Math has always had an inconspicuous collection of useful math constants, mainly those that are used internally. The presentation of these was as a function-template, called for example, as pi<double>(). using namespace boost::math::constants; return pi<Real>() * r * r; This leads to some rather ugly equations and is most unpopular with scientific and engineering users. John Maddock has now added a new cunning feature that allows the vast majority of users who just want a built-in double to get the constants quickly as plain variables. So in non-template code, users can write using boost::math::double_constants; double area = pi * r * r; and users can read the equations easily. (Float and long double are similarly available in their own namespaces). The original mechanism which can be used for higher multiprecision user-defined floating-point types appears unchanged but has been improved to work better with UDTs and high precision types. The following code gives me a warning: void trigger (::std ::vector < int > const &v) { ::boost ::size (v) == v. size (); } and the warning is "signed and unsigned in comparison". I understand that (size == end - begin) and that the latter expression is a difference; however, isn't the difference guaranteed to be positive? Also note that no range function ever uses range_size ::type. I suggest that ::boost ::size should return range_size ::type. Chris

How to pass additional arguments to a boost test case?

Dear colleagues, I would like to pass additional command line arguments to a given boost test. For example, if I execute the following from the command line: mytest.exe --log_level=all --param1=value1 --param2=value2 then I would like to be able to get param1 and param2 parameters inside the test cases doing: BOOST_AUTO_TEST_CASE(read_ param_from_command_line) { std::cout << "Param1=" << some_function("param1") << std::endl; std::cout << "Param2=" << some_function("param2") << std::endl; } What s the recommended approach in this case? The algorithm equal_range takes the Value by constant reference while the algorithm upper_bound takes Value by value. Why is that? (Note that standard algorithms take a constant reference.)

[Units] How do you declare a plane angle to be dimensionless?

Boost ver: 1.45 Compiler: Visual Studio 2008 I am trying to figure out how to declare a plane angle to be dimensionless. In the code I have so far I am using: typedef boost::units::make_system<radii_base_unit, minute_base_unit, boost::units::angle::radian_base_unit >::type myproject_system_t; I have one velocity in radii^1.5/min and a second velocity in radian/min. When I divide the radii^1.5/min by radian/min I am expecting to see radii to be the final dimension. What I am seeing is the denominator has radians in it. Here is my equation ke = radii^1.5/min n = radian/min a1 = ( ke / n ) ^ (2/3) The 'min' dimension cancel out so I am left with radii^1.5/radian before applying the power of 2/3. Applying the power of 2 I see the units are radii^3/radian^2 and then the 1/3 to get a final of radii/radian^(2/3). According to the almighty Wikipedia the radian angle is a dimensionless term. I am wondering what is the recommended course of action I should be taking here? Stephen

Using boost::asio::io_service with boost::packaged_task

I'm trying to create a thread pool / task queue like system via boost::asio::io_service and boost::packaged_task rather than attempt to make 800+ threads for 800+ tasks that I have to make. (I'm not sure of the various concurrency issues that I might have, so reducing thread creation overhead is probably one of my big refactorings in my project.) Whoops! uint_value_t<10>::least is unsigned char... Can something be done about this, like having uint_value_t<10>::least be something that looks and acts like an unsigned char but is recognized by lexical_cast to be an integer type, not a character type?

What is the correct syntax for creating a boost::bimap<SDLKey, boost::function<void(boost::shared_ptr<Player>, bool)> >? (SDLKey is part of the SDL library. It is an enumeration. See here http://www.libsdl.org/cgi/docwiki.cgi/SDLKey) The code above does not compile, generating long cryptic template-related errors. Using an std::map<SDLKey, boost::function<void(boost::shared_ptr<Player>, bool)> > works, however. I could use some help overcoming this obstacle.

[Units] Unable to raise constant to power of two

In the attached code I am trying to take a constant physical unit and raise it to a power of two. The compiler is complaining that it cannot find a template to satisfy multiply_typeof_helper. It says that there are more than one partial specialization that matches the template argument list. I read something on the web about there was no pow operation for constants. The solution to that problem was to upgrade to Boost 1.48. Unforunately I am constrained to using Boost 1.45. What is an work around for this problem? I have three C++ classes X, Y and Z that I have exported from C++ to Python using python::class_. Boost Units, Has anyone done any work, conversions, etc, with Acceleration, Velocity, Displacement (Length) in terms of decibels? dB, dBA, dBV, etc, and conversions to/from more "conventional" units like meters, meters per second, meters per second per second? I am learning, for example, that it is possibly to integrate across the Time dimension in order to yield Velocity from Acceleration, or similarly, Displacement (Length) from Velocity. I am doing a job with these type conversions going on across a spectrum analysis and would be interested in hooking up the calculations using boost::units to help enforce dimensional / unit integrity. Embedded python using boost

I'm in the process of learning python, and embedding python into C++. I know very little about python so I've been playing around with many different types of interfaces and API's, with varying degrees of successes and failures. What I'm currently working on is the boost interface with C++. I am, however, stuck, for lack of a better word. Since the system I'm playing on is at work and on an isolated network, I do not have the ability to post the code directly to this forum. As such, I was able to print a copy of some experimental code, brought it home, and scanned it into a PDF file. I've attached the file(s) containing the code. If someone could please take a look at it and provide some advice as to what my problems are, it would be greatly appreciated. You'll notice some lines commented out as I've been experimenting with different things in an attempt to get something to work. My main problem at the moment is that the functions import(), eval(), and exec() cannot be found by the compiler. I get compiler errors indicating they are not declared in scope. I'm running on a redhat linux system (5.4) with a 1.33.1 version of boost. Python is version 2.4. I forgot to check the GNU C++ compiler version, but I'm guessing that probably doesn't matter.

I am building intervals using 0.5h increments (1800sec) in a cycle. The interval length is 1800sec also 8:30 am is used as start date. last of my interval looks like this: [2009-Apr-07 14:30:00/2009-Apr-07 14:59:59.999999] because of this weired endpoint my data with the timestamp of Apr-07 15:00:0000 does not fit into the interval How can I fix the interval to be [2009-Apr-07 14:30:00/2009-Apr-07 15:00:000000] ? I have closed some duplicates, but some news tickets have been created since. I would like to reduce by 10% the number of tickets every month. I encourage the Boost users that have created tickets for Boost to provide a clear an complete patch when possible so that we can reduce together the number of tickets associated to this Boost library and make it more portable/usable. Don't forget to provide tests that make evident the bug, or to add doc when you are proposing a anew feature. There are a lot of tickets associated to move semantics emulation. I have created a ticket to adapt Boost.Thread to Boost.Move hoping most of these bugs will be solved. As posted in another thread there is already a patch using Boost.Move that could be a good starting point. Of course the help offered by Ion will be too much appreciated. I have created another to adapt the interface to Boost.Chrono, but I will prefer to take care of this once the one for Boost.Move adaptation is committed, as the chance of collisions is big. [serialization] Warning "type qualifier is meaningless on cast type" in extended_type_info_typeid.hpp

Hi, When I compile code that uses the 1.48.0 serialization library with icpc 12.3.174, I get this warning, along with screenfuls of instantiation context: /n/home00/pjonsson/include/boost/serialization/extended_type_info_typeid.hpp(134): warning #191: type qualifier is meaningless on cast type static_cast<T const * const>(p) ^ This is the offending code: virtual void destroy(void const * const p) const { boost::serialization::access::destroy( static_cast<T const * const>(p) ); The compiler is complaining (correctly, I think) that you can't dictate whether something returned by value (here, the T const *) is const or not. Changing the cast to: static_cast<T const *>(p) makes the warning go away. Perhaps someone can make this change? Regards, /Patrik J.

C0x11 threading capabilities

Hi, I have some question about the threading programming capabilities of boost library. First question: The new C++ standard C++11 has a support for threading programming. I have read some times ago, that with high probability the threading library of the C++11 should be the same of boost library? If it is true, can I use the boost thread library and in the future, when the C++ standard will be completed, could I transparently switching to it? What are the differencies between the boost thread library and the future C++11 thread library? Second question: this question is strictly related to the first one. At the moment GCC supports only a small subset of threading programming features http: //wiki.apache.org/stdcxx/C++0xCompilerSupport. So using thread boost library allows me to use the full features of future C++ standard library? Or I'm limited by the compiler? Last question: what about the OpenMP directives? How they are different in terms power and flexibility for the parallel programming task respect to the boost library? Thank you Best Regards

Changelog for 1.47.0 does not properly warn about critical bug

Hello, I discovered this bug by accident https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/changeset/68866 which was only linked via the ticket mentioned below, The code below demonstrates that ANY wide-character string of the same length resolves to the same UUID ! Thats pretty darn serious, I expected to see a much more serious mention in the Changelog in boost 1.47.0... for UUID, there was only a mention of a few tickets including this one: https://svn.boost.org/trac/boost/ticket/5145 which only mentioned a WARNING in the description ! "Fixed warning: use of logical && with constant operand; switch to bitwise & or remove constant [-Wconstant-logical-operand]" Surely it should say something like "UUIDs for wide character strings are totally wrong" Note also that the Changelog link for UUID goes to Utility, not UUID. Problem with user defined Boost Units system

I am using Boost 1.45 and trying to use Boost Units to map the types of astrodynamic equation variables. I am getting an error with the following equation. The error is saying that the lvalue type for k2_divded_by_semi_major is wrong. The questions I have are: Q1: Did I defined my system correctly? (System file is attached - types.hpp) Q2: How do I define ratio in the system? For example I have some constants that define a conversion (1 earth radii = 6378 km). Multicast using Asio

Hi, I'm working on a rudimentary pub/sub mechanism using Asio, with the requirement that the publisher be notified when a new subscriber appears. Using multicast, this would correspond to a subscriber joining the multicast group. But it appears there's no way for the publisher to know this, correct? If so, is the only alternative to dedicate a socket to each pub/sub pair? Thanks, Vince

[phoenix] problem when trying to access member via arg1

Hi, I have below test program in which I try to call a function on each map object. It compiles and runs fine with gcc 4.5 but not on vc10. Is arg1 and ->* operator supposed to work when arg1 is an object and not pointer? Or is there another way of accessing members with arg1 (i.e. without phoenix::bind)? http://www.boost.org/users/download/#repository says that "Anonymous, read-only access to the Boost Subversion repository is available at http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost." My attempts to make checkout results in svn prompting for credentials. Seems like misconfiguration to me. - ML

Using hash_range with polymorphism

I'm having a hard time reconciling two distinct notions. Suppose I have a class hierarchy with root class Foo, and subclasses Foo1, Foo2, etc. (all of which are leaf classes) Now, suppose that hash_value() is defined for all the subclasses but not Foo itself (say, if Foo was abstract). Now suppose I have this: struct FooList { std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Foo>> foos; } std::size_t hash_value(const FooList& list) { std::size_t seed = 0; typedef boost::indirect_iterator<std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Foo>>::const_iterator> Iterator; boost::hash_range(seed, Iterator(list.foos.begin()), Iterator(list.foos.end()); return seed; } This seems a bit incorrect (and it would fail to compile due to "ambiguous overload" of hash_combine or something). What I want to do is something along the lines of std::size_t hash_value(const FooList& list) { std::size_t seed = 0; for (std::vector<boost::shared_ptr<Foo>>::const_iterator it = list.foos.begin(); it != list.foos.end(); ++it) { boost::hash_combine(seed, **it); } return seed; } That is, hash the Foos pointed to by the foos (using the correct derived class hash_value() functions) and not the shared_ptrs themselves. Is there a "shorter" version of the latter (which I presume is correct), or will the latter have to do?
