Hello. It's my first post here... I'll try to be quick and sharp. i apologise if i fail. I spend a long time reading the Boost.Log documentation, but I'm lost. I try to generate logs with this Format : [ProcessId][ThreadId[TimeStamp][Channel][Severity] Text For now i succeeded this Format : [ProcessId][ThreadId[TimeStamp][][] Text Here's what i did. weird boost::asio problems opening acceptor

I have a server where there must be only one instance of it for a given machine on a given port number. Here is the code I used to try to make that happen: boost::asio::io_service ios; boost::asio::ip::tcp::endpoint primaryEndpoint(boost::asio::ip::tcp::v4(), primaryPort); std::auto_ptr<boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor> primaryAcceptor; try { primaryAcceptor.reset(new boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor(ios, primaryEndpoint)); primaryAcceptor->open(primaryEndpoint.protocol()); primaryAcceptor->set_option(boost::asio::ip::tcp::acceptor::reuse_address(true)); primaryAcceptor->bind(primaryEndpoint); } catch(std::exception& ex) { std::cout << "Error: Cannot obtain port " << primaryPort << ", " << ex.what() << ", server must be already running." << std::endl; } It always prints the error. The error is 'Already open'. The exception gets thrown from the call to open. What am I doing wrong please? If don't do the open etc then I can run up a second instance and it will have the port also. It is as if SO_REUSEADDR is true. I always thought that SO_REUSEADDR was false by default. When I run it in the debugger and breakpoint before the call to open , the process has the port open for listening, as revealed by 'netstat -a'. It is as if it has already done the open with SO_REUSEADDR set to true. I am using boost version 1.42.0 on Windoze-XP compiled with Visual Studio 2005 (don't laugh....). Problems with boost 1.44.0 and MSVC: boost::mutex::scoped_lock and std::deque in multithreaded application

Greetings, ppl. I've got strange problems with the latest stable boost (1.44.0) and MSVS studios 2005 and 2010. The first problem I got (it seems being not dependent on boost version) was the heap allocation exception when using mutex::scoped_lock to guard references to std::deque from different threads in multithreaded application. I used MSVS SP1 compiler I checked it with boost 1.41.0 and it appeared there too, so it's not the bug of the latest version, for sure. I was not sure if it wasn't a bug of STL, but the strange thing was that if I used usual mutex lock/unlock functions instead of scoped_lock - it went just perfectly. That's why I decided to ask here, instead of blaming STL. I'm not sure if it's a bug to send it to a buglist. I'm far from being a newbie in multithreading programming, but I cannot guess where it comes from and I've got too little time to get deep into detailed boost debug. I've written a little test application that reveals the problem, I'm not sure if it's a good idea to insert the code right here, but I can send it on request. The second problem raised up when I tried to compile the same test application with MSVS 2010. I didn't use the MSVS 2010 for my application, but I decided to test if it was a problem with STL libs. That result was access violation in the boost::thread constructor. It goes well under MSVS 2005, though. And the constructor is ok when using MSVS 2010 with boost 1.41.0 too. I found some info in the internet that this bug appeared in boost 1.43.0, but was fixed. Bug I could not find it in bugs list of boost, so I decided to ask about it here. Meantime, the problem with heap allocation remained, with MSVS 2010 and boost 1.41.0. I'm not sure what to do with this issues. Maybe these are known problems? Sincerely, Yana.

Boost: Getting Started on Windows

Using this tutorial I tried to build the first sample with Windows Visual C++ 6.0. PGI compile problem with lanczos_sse2.hpp

I am trying to link to a library that uses some code from boost. So far I have been able to build the code under gcc, intel and pathscale compilers. However, I get about 100 errors from this file under pgi (versions 7.1, 7.2 and 10.1) boost/boost/math/special_functions/detail/lanczos_sse2.hpp I have copied the first few error messages to the end of this email. My suspicion is that some settings are not correct for this compilation under PGI. I did check that the header files used by "lanczos_sse2.hpp" were present. I don't have any experience with the SSE/SSE2 optimizations. FYI, our build system uses bjam, so there is a Jamfile for boost, which I can send if needed. [serialization] boost::serialization adds huge amounts of exports to resultant Windows PE file

Hey guys, I am using boost::serialization from 1.44.0. One thing that I noticed is that linking statically to the serialization libs will add several hundred exports in the final exe file that I get. Using `dumpbin /exports my_program.exe` Here's a brief illustration: Let's say we have a typical Hello World program (code example at the end of this message) that uses `iostream`. Here's what we get when we run `dumpbin /exports my_program.exe`. Boost Logos

Dear all, I remember that there was a discussion a while ago about logos. Among the proposals was a logo of the type "This code uses Boost". I'd like to acknowledge the great work of the Boost library authors and would thus like to add the logo to the manual of our software. Boost Lexer

At http://www.boost.org/community/review_schedule.html there is a link for the yet to be reviewed Boost Lexer library. It points to http://boost- consulting.com/vault/index.php? action=downloadfile&filename=boost.lexer.zip&directory=Strings%20-%20Text% 20Processing but the directory it goes to has no file that is obviously the Boost Lexer library. Has it been moved somewhere else? Is there somewhere else I could get it from? Also (unrelated) why isn't Boost 1.44 in the table under "Past Review Results and Milestones"? I would have expected it since the Noost releases prior to that are listed there. And one last question, where can I get a copy of Steven Watanabe's Switch library? On that same page I can see the "accepted" email but I can't figure out where to find the actual library. Thanks very much.

On the review schedule page ( http://www.boost.org/community/review_schedule.html ) there is a link to download the Boost Lexer library: http://boost-consulting.com/vault/index.php? action=downloadfile&filename=boost.lexer.zip&directory=Strings%20-%20Text% 20Processing But when I click it it takes me to a directory in the Boost Vault that doesn't contain anything that is obviously this library. [Boost.Units] radians and degrees

Dear List, I use VS2010. I have just ventured into Boost.Units as me and my colleagues frequently make errors in our code by mixing up degrees and radians (function takes one but we supply it the other). In some cases a degree representation makes sense, in other the radian representation. Basically, I want to use radian and degree quantities and use implicit conversions to freely interchange between the two (say a user supplies degrees to a function whose declaration asks for radians, or vice versa, things should simply be converted on the fly so that the function has the input it expects and its output is not wrong). I have no need for the SI system or anything else. I am however having some trouble understanding something that must be rather basic. Consider the following code: ---- #include <boost/units/quantity.hpp> #include <boost/units/systems/si/plane_angle.hpp> #include <boost/units/systems/angle/degrees.hpp> int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::plane_angle> r(.38*boost::units::si::radian); boost::units::quantity<boost::units::si::plane_angle> d(6*boost::units::degree::degree); r = 2.*d; d = 6*boost::units::degree::degree; d = 2.*r; return 1; } ---- The declaration of d works just fine, but assigning exactly the same to d two lines below does not, giving me a compilation error where the crux is "error C2338: (is_implicitly_convertible<Unit2,unit_type>::value == true)". I am thinking that the problem here is that boost::units::degree::degree is not part of the SI system, but of the system defined in boost/units/systems/angle/degrees.hpp. However, why does the declaration initialization two lines above work fine? In any case, for my usage case, should I simply build a minimal system with one dimension, plane_angle, define radian (most stuff does happen in radian, so guess it would cut down on conversions) as the base unit and supply degree as well? How would I then supply degree? All the examples define other units (such as feet instead of meters) in seperate systems using make_system, wouldn't that lead to the problems I observe above? Maybe a very stupid question, but I haven't quite wrapped my head around this: how do I then represent a value in degrees, or is this irrelevant? Any pointers much appreciated! A NewbieQ: From a client app I want to connect to a server app on a remote host (say port 6666). A requirement is that the client shall be bound to a defined port (say port 5555). How to do this in asio? Does the client need to use an acceptor? (ok, this maybe sounds non-sensical, but who knows... :-)

[BGL] SPPRC formulation

Hi, I would like to use the r_c_shortest_paths algorithm. My constraint is that given pairs of vertices i, j (each i have a single mate j) must have a distance between them which is consistent with a given distribution. I am looking for the path which is most consistent with this distribution. Does anybody have any experience of formulating such a constraint in BGL? The second problem is that I am currently modelling the problem with an undirected graph. The edges could be viewed as bi-directional, but only due to the double stranded nature of DNA. Once I have started on a path I just choose the label which is consistent with the direction I am going, but the graph is essentially undirected, you can always go in either direction down an edge. Could an undirected graph be used with this algorithm or must I use a directed graph? I have tried to ask this question before, hopefully this time I have phrased it better - plus I am actually ready to code it now. As always, any advice gratefully received. CreateProcess

Hello all, I was asking if there is CreateProcess like functionailty in Boost. In our application we lock files, and spawn a process (thru _spawn). However it seems that m$ implemented in this way that handles are inherited by child process. This means that the child process is also getting the handle of the locked file, preventing the main application to write to this locked file. So I was wondering if there is a portable c++ way to create prcoesses. Otheriwse we have to write it ourselves and spying the sources of m$ it seems that parsing the commandline is not trivial.

boost serialize - stack overflow for large problems

I have implemented the serialization routine for a rather complex structure with many nested classes. The serialization seems to work for small examples, however, for bigger data sets, I get a stack overflow error. If I increase the stack size from 8MB to 20MB, the examples seems to work. However, I'd like to optimize the code the way that I do not need to increase the stack size (especially, since not all users can do that themselves) So here are my questions: 1. Why is the required stack size different for different data sets different. The structure of the datasets is identical, only the number of data sets differs - so why is the recursive level different? The only thing I can imagine is, that I have a class (container) with a vector of objects. Each object stores a pointer to the container class. Is it possible that once serialization in the container class starts, that there is a recursive serialization pattern? This seems to be support by the fact that the objects in the container class are not serialized in the same way as they are stored in the container. class container { std::vector<object*> myObjects; }; class object { const container* myContainer; } 2. How can I try to decrease the required stack size for the serialization routines and is there a way to estimate the required stack size for a specific problem a priori, so that I can throw an exception with an error message manually instead of having a segmentation fault. Hello, I have a Texas Instruments OMAP3 EVM board with an ARMv7 processor and a DSP, running Linux with kernel 2.6.32 and cross compiling with CodeSourcery's gnu g++ 4.3.3. I would like to know if any of boost is usable on this platform? I am most interested in the threading, bind, signals, and asio. [BGL] visualizing large graphs

Hi, although this might seem a bit off-topic, I think it is an important topic and might be very well interesting for some of us. The boost graph library provides methods to export graphs e.g. for the use with graphviz. However, this is a rather "one-way" solution. Besides that, it is difficult to handle large graphs with graphviz. Therefore, I was wondering if there have been some recent developments here? I would especially be interested in a solution that allows the direct visualisation of a graph (even previously serialized), possibly integrating ways to filter out some of the data in order to be able to visualize the graph in some way. It is clear to me that visualizing arbitrarily large graphs will be limited by physical limitations mostly (RAM etc.). But I would find it very convenient to at least load the graph, set some filters, so that I don't need to do this seperatly via a C++-program. Actually, I am writing my graph to a format that can be visualized by Cytoscape. Unfortunately, this suffers from large limitations on the size of the graph (number of edges and nodes). I am looking forward to hear your ideas about this and possible suggestions about libraries or programs that might achieve this goal. Thank you. Best regards, Cedric

Hi, when calling get_override() method while trying to find python overload and overload is not found exception in python is set. This is because PyObject_GetAttrString() is used for retrieving the attribute. If attribute is not found, PyObject_GetAttrString() set the exception. This is using python 3.1. I always found the rules for printf formatting, which Boost.Format uses, cryptic. I usually find the right combination by trial and error. In this case I want to print decimal numbers with both fixed number of integer digits and decimal digits. Even Release mode cannot optimize away these explicitly marked DLL exports. Should we at least have an option to turn off this very intrusive workaround? Right now my only option is to patch `force_include.hpp` manually. There might be some people that actually need the hack, but for some of us who's dug into it and actually confirmed it's not needed, it would be nice to be able to turn that off since the bloat introduced is definitely non-trivial. ** Of course I don't mean this particular sample program generates 8MB of export symbols. This is only to show what I mean by "it compiles and runs." The actual program that resulted from boost::serialization's 8MB bloat contained 100+ "exported" classes serialized through base pointers. The specs is quite close to what I showed in the sample program. ** That doesn't seem to play well with CodePad's boost. Oh well. Best regards, Chris Yuen
