link error on boost example using binary library

Hi there, I am a beginner using boost. I am installing boost 1.40 on windows XP with sp3 and Visual Studio Standard 2008. I followed the "Getting Started on Windows" section 5.2 "Or, Simplified Build From Source. to build my binaries". i.e. bootstrap .\bjam I then tried to run the example in section 6:Link Your Program to a Boost Library. why is this bzip2 boost code so slow?

Hello, This code with bzip2 takes 185 seconds to do 10000 iterations of compressing and uncompressing. This seems way too high. When I replace the bzip2 code with zlib code it take roughly 7 seconds. Boost.Signals2 - tracking an object managed with tr1::shared_ptr

Is it possible to use slot::track with a tr1::shared_ptr instead of a boost::shared_ptr? For example: std::tr1::shared_ptr<MyObject> o; typedef boost::signals2::signal<void(void)> SigType; SigType s; // Error: can't convert std::tr1::shared_ptr<MyObject> to boost::weak_ptr... s.connect(SigType::slot_type(&MyObject::function, o.get()).track(o)); According to the docs you HAVE to use boost::shared_ptr. I'm just hoping there's some traits specialization or something I can provide so that I can get away with using the tr1 version instead (all our code is already written with tr1). Thanks! -Nathan

[Filesystem] Problem with uncatchable exception when checking empty card reader

Hello, I am using the Filesystem library from boost 1.38.0 on Windows (Visual Studio 2005) like this: if (boost::filesystem::exists("W:") && boost::filesystem::is_empty("W:")) { ... do something useful ... } "W:" is assigned to an (usually) empty card reader slot. Unfortunately Filesystem's exists() function fails with an uncatchable exception. At least I cannot catch it... The exception is thrown by GetFileAttributesA() in operations.hpp: inline DWORD get_file_attributes( const char * ph ) { return ::GetFileAttributesA( ph ); } The exception pops up an error message that is titled "Windows - no disc" and it says: Exception Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b0bf9c 4 75b0bf9c 75b0bf9c Sadly, all I can do is to prefix a call to exists() with a call to GetVolumeInformationA() (from winbase.h) like this: if (GetVolumeInformationA("W:", NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL)) { if (boost::filesystem::exists("W:") && boost::filesystem::is_empty("W:")) { ... do something useful ... } } Is there any way to do this platform-independent? [ptr_container] Dereferencing boost::signals2::signal from ptr_map

Hi, I got a huge problem with a boost::ptr_map. I am storing instances of boost::signals2::signal in it and try to dereference a iterator to one of those instances, to be able to call the operator () of the signal. This compiles correctly on Linux and gcc 4.4 but fails on Windows using Visual C++ 2008. Building Boost 1.40

I built Boost 1.40 on Linux and installed it Ok. However are the libraries singlethreaded or multithreaded? eg. the library names are like this: libboost_python.so libboost_python.so.1.40.0 The older versions had -mt- in their name. eg. libboost_python-gcc43-mt.so etc. Thanks Andrew -- ___________________________________________ Andrew J. [interprocess] named_condition.timed_wait does not wait.

Hi all, I am fighting with the named_condition again. Currently I am using timed_wait but it does not behave like I expected. Sometimes it is okay (triggers on the given timeout) but sometimes it just returns immediately false (ignoring the timeout). Can someone give me a hint what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
