However, now i tried the same code on Windows XP, using MinGW with gcc 3.4.5 i get the following error: "error: there are no arguments to 'assert' that depend on a template parameter, so a declaration of 'assert' must be available". I had exactly the same error on Linux, there i put a #include <cassert> before the #include to boost::ptr_map and everything worked. But on windows, i tried #include <cassert> and #include <assert.h>, also a #include <cassert> #ifndef assert #define assert assert #endif in case something was messing with the name. I tried version 1.39 and 1.37 on windows and the result is the same. I also carefully inspected the headers i also include, suspecting some might #define an include-guard that confuses with assert. No luck yet and I'm out of ideas now. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Just a general question, Could one use Boost.Regex to build a Well-Formed and Validating XML parser whose view is iterators to elements inside the XML document? In other words, create a class that acts like an XML parser so that you may derive from it to say create a XMPP class? Etienne

BOOST_FOREACH question

Suppose I've got a concrete instance C of some class, and a pair of iterators X and Y representing a range [X, Y). I want to do the following: int a, b, c; while (X != Y) { C.foo(*X, a, b, c); ++X; } I can type it out like that, but actually X and Y are zip_iterators, and it's hard for me to figure out how to parameterize the zip_iterator to instantiate it. Even still the for_each is already complicated and kind of hard to read, I feel like there should be a one or two-liner to do this :( the io_service::post() function simply calls encode_handler() on another thread. I'm thinking it might just be easier to walk each sequence manually, but at some point I was hoping to templatize the async_encode() function rather than have it take vectors.

[Q] help serializing a multiset of shared ptrs

The timeout is meant to work as a character delay, allowing a maximum of 10 seconds between each transmitted character before failing. The writing part works A-ok. The reading throws the expected exception if no characters are transmitted by the oppositing device. However, if I transmit 9 characters from the device, these characters are displayed, appended by a '\0' character (or whichever character I choose as default in read<char>()). io.run() seems to return immediately, not even waiting for any characters to be transmitted. Adding completion_conditions to async_read(), like transfer_all() or transfer_at_least(1) did not do the trick, either. What is going wrong here? Hello all, I am running into some odd "quirks" of the filtering_istream in the boost::iostreams library. Perhaps I am just using it wrong, but all code compiles, and does _almost_ what I would expect it to. Unfortunately, on my platform anyway ( gcc 4.3.3 on 64 bit linux ) - and verified by another user ( also on linux 64 bit, gcc 4.4 ) - that the two code blocks not only differ, but differ in odd ways. The filtering_istream blocks on input, and will not resume until *4* EOF characters are sent. If I remove the invert(tee(log_file)) only *2* EOF need to be sent. First off, I do not know why it is blocking (perhaps this is expected from a filtering_istream which expects to read the entire stream to EOF). I have not found this documented anywhere. Either way, the fact that multiple EOF's need to be sent, and the fact that that number differs depending on the pipeline, leads me to think there is either a bug or I am not using something as intended. Thanks for any help! -Michal p.s. My requirements are only to create an istream which sends what is read from standard input to a log file, while still having the input available for processing by the application. Maybe can suggest another way to solve the problem?

using Boost.Interprocess with different compilers

Hi, is it possible to communicate between multiple programs using Boost.Interprocess, if the programs are compiled with different compilers e.g. MSVS 7.1 and MinGw gcc 3.4.5 ? regards Dominik Holler

Hi all, I need to store in a class an object which type is within a predefined set. As I would like to avoid the overhead of virtual functions, I am wondering if variant could help me. Moreover, I would like to know what is the runtime cost of using such a type (instead of base class pointers), and the cost of the apply_visitor. Hope you could help. Regards, Olivier
