offtopic: std C++ / STL / boost-friendly UI framework?

Hi, This is a bit of an offtopic question, but I wonder if there are any / if there will be any standard C++ / STL / boost friendly UI frameworks? When I look at UI libraries, like Qt or MS MFC, they all have their own constructs to generic concepts that are well (and better) covered in standard C++ / STL / boost. Like they have QArray, CArray, QFile, etc. etc. This is bad for a number of reasons. For one, one has to write a lot of adaptation code, like taking values from an STL iterator and filling a QArray with it, or the other way around. The second, much worse is that sloppy developers tend to stick with the UI-library specific constructs, and thus dig themselves into non-portable (in the case of MFC), or library- and license-specific (Qt which in GPL) code. And they are usually quite resistant to reasoning on using more generic and portable code for the same purpose. Thus I wonder - does anyone foresee a portable UI library which would be based on standard C++ / STL / boost? By this I mean that the generic constructs would be taken from here, and the UI library would really only contain things specific to UIs? Akos

[test] output_test_stream undocumented behaviour

Hi boost-users, I've mentioned that after calling output_test_stream.is_empty() the stream will be cleared. If you subsequently want to compare the stream with output_test_stream.is_equal(...) this doesn't work, because the stream is empty. Is this a bug or a feature? [mpl] equal_to compile problems

Hi, my first steps in mpl are very rough. I have enum { RELEASE_LEVEL = (10 << 4), ... }; and want to check on an appropriate enum number: #include <boost/mpl/equal_to.hpp> #include <boost/mpl/int.hpp> #include <boost/mpl/placeholders.hpp> namespace { namespace mpl = boost::mpl; using namespace mpl::placeholders; typedef mpl::equal_to<_1, mpl::int_<0xC> >::type release_candidate; } ... if(release_candidate<RELEASE_LEVEL>::value) return a; else return b; which doesn't compile. Can boost::interprocess be somehow used to implement Solaris door functionality ?

Hi I have been using Solaris DOORS in my project which is now being ported to Linux. I am extremely sorry if this is not the place to post this thread but all I am asking is " is there any boost library to make this thing possible ". I have downloaded boost 1.36 and there is this library called boost::interprocess . Can it in anyway be used to implement functioning similar to Solaris DOORS ? Here is what I want to do: Process 1 passes arguments to process to using a function say f1(arguments).. in Solaris it is called door_call. The function is executed in the process2 and then return values returned. When this happens, the process 1 returns. I don't need any ready made package etc to do this but I am just asking for suggestions as what would be the best way to implement this ? I just need some suggestions as boost is the place for expert library designers and I want to do it in the best possible way so as to learn. I am asking suggestions because I guess this thing would take time and I don't want to go in the wrong direction first and then get the right way. So that's why this thread. Thanks for your patience. Hello Sebastian and thank you for the follow up, I must precise that I have 2 builds of my projects: one linking to the multi threaded static runtime (/MT) and one linking to the multithreaded dynamic runtine (/MD). I defined BOOST_ALL_NO_LIB=1 to disable autolinking, and i am linking manually to libboost_filesystem-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib libboost_program_options-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib and libboost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib for the /MT variant, and to boost_filesystem-vc90-mt-1_36.lib, boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib and boost_system-vc90-mt-1_36.lib for the /MD variant. For _both_ variants, I get stuck with following unresolved externals: __declspec(dllimport) public: void __thiscall boost::program_options::detail::cmdline::set_additional_parser(...) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_category const & __cdecl boost::system::get_generic_category(void) __declspec(dllimport) class boost::system::error_code boost::filesystem::detail::throws What is more suprising, is that for the dynamic version, the set_additional_parser export _does_ appear when I dumpbin /exports ./boost_program_options-vc90-mt-1_36.lib | grep set_additional_parser but the two other symbols do not appear in boost_system-vc90-mt-s-1_36.lib. Any idea what I am getting wrong ? Beginning to feel lost. E.g.: dumpbin /exports ..\boost_1_36_0\lib.x86-nt-msvc8\boost_program_options-vc80-mt-gd-1_36.lib | grep program_options::arg The "non dll-interface" warnings are OK, but am I missing something or are you not linking against boost_program_options-*.lib ? I looked at your examples but think that you can abstract better. I don't think one should have to use sendmessage for example. Not that I do much .net dev, but I did find that winforms was the easiest ui framework I have seen. I find the interface *very easy* to use, but it is still quite incomplete. I have a few code for gtk+ but it is not working right now, I will do a rewrite of the gtk+ support for the lib in the near future. Umm, just out of interest, what *is* Wascana supposed to be? The site just calls it "Desktop Developer" and while it does mention Eclipse I'm not at all clear how it's related. I've jumped around the site but wasn't able to locate any explanation of what it really is. It does mention that it 'incorporates' (among other things) wxWidget and intends to 'incorporate' boost, but what is 'incorporate' supposed to mean? JRE is listed as well (but also gdb), so again I'm wondering what is this thing? As an aside, last I looked Eclipse was Java only, so why would Wascana be of help for C++ development when it's aimed at Eclipse (or so I understand it for now) Sorry if I'm being dumb, the issue interests me for private purposes and I've got to admit I'm a bit out of touch with UI development tools atm.
