Want to use Boost in our projects. We are using Fedora linux. I know Fedora has included Boost in its distribution but I plan to have my project only use the Boost lib included in my project resource tree but not the one included in the OS. That is I plan to have my project totally self-contained without any dependence on OS in terms of Boost lib. What's the right way to do that? Any input will be appreciated. thanks, James

Hi, is it possible to build boost.python such that the python version gets embedded in the .so name along with the compiler name, version, multithread flags, etc? For example, "libboost_python25-gcc41-mt-1_35.so" instead of "libboost_python-gcc41-mt-1_35.so" Alternatively, is it possible to build it without the embedded SONAME so that it can be renamed afterwards? [serialization] Polymorphism?

Hi, I have a class named Bar which derives from a class named Foo. Both Foo and Bar are serializable, and thus they both have the respective serialize() functions. However, if I do the following, you will not get a polymorphic call since you cannot have virtual template members in a class (The serialize() function must be a template according to the Boost.Serialization docs). Foo* f = new Bar; f->serialize(); Note that you wouldn't call serialize() directly like this, I'm simply doing it to prove a point. At some point Boost.Serialization is going to want to call the Serialize() function off of my Foo object, however it will not call Bar::serialize() as I would expect since I cannot make serialize() virtual. How would I provide polymorphic serialization of objects in Boost.Serialization? Thanks.

Building boost 1.37 (Regex with ICU) problem with MSVC9 x64

Hi, I am unable to cleanly fully build boost 1.37 with ICU for regex for x64 on Windows with MSVC++ 2008. I first tried building with MSVS 2008 SP1 on Windows XP SP3 with ICU 4.0. Building x86 versions first, there were a number of link error, so I (copy & then) renamed icudt.lib, icuin.lib, icuind.lib, and icuind.pdb to icudata.lib & icui18n* as a comment suggested on a website I found via Google. That fixed the x86 errors. I did the same with the x64 ICU files, and try building, but got 4 link errors. D:\boost_1_37_0>bjam --without-mpi --toolset=msvc --build-dir=x64 --build-type=complete -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sICU_PATH="...." stage Because I had a few post-building error cross building ICU to x64 as it runs some build'd .exe that obviously can't run on x86 Windows, I preceeded to try building Boost.Regex on Windows XP x64 SP2 (running inside VMWare), again with MSVS 2008 SP1. Cleanly build ICU 4.0, copy & renamed the libs as above, before building: C:\boost_1_37_0>bjam --with-regex --toolset=msvc --build-type=complete -sHAVE_ICU=1 -sICU_PATH="C:\icu" stage The errors that resulted are essentially the same as before. Boost.MPI problems with non-PODs

I am having some problems getting boost::mpi working with our local installation of openmpi 1.2.3 here at Los Alamos. I am able to send POD's through the interface, but it fails sending anything more complicated (i.e. std::string). Have I missed some step in the process? I get the following error when I tried the 2nd example from the on-line Tutorial ... terminate called after throwing an instance of 'boost::exception_detail::clone_impl<boost::exception_detail::error_info_injector<boost::mpi::exception> >' what(): MPI_Alloc_mem: MPI_ERR_NO_MEM: out of memory Also, I was unable to build a single threaded version of libboost_mpi which struck me as odd. Hi, I'm a beginner in using boost asio library (and coding c++ too :). I am currently trying to code a simple application that handles some communication with a server through TCP/IP connection. My I/O Class has two threads that use synchronous socket operations on the same socket (which is a member of the class) Main thread: CApplication::Close() - socket.close() CApplication::Open() - socket.open(boost::asio::ip::tcp::v4()); - socket.write_some(boost::asio::buffer(initial_command)); - socket.read_some(boost::asio::buffer(initial_command_reply)); CApplication::Write(data from another class) - m_Socket.write_some Workerthread: CApplication::thread_Run() do { - socket.read_some(boost::asio::buffer((void *)&character, 1)); - package bytes to messages and pass them on to another class } while (!bClosed) My question is that is it safe to call write_some and read_some from different threads without synchronization. The application is now working w/o problems but I need to be sure that this is a safe way to do this before continuing development. [asio] synchronous mode, timeouts and boost::thread

Hello *, asio (at least in boost release 1.35) does not support timeouts on synchronous socket operations. What happens if I start a sync read operation from a separate boost thread and interrupt the thread after some certain period of time? This worked fine with gcc 4.3 on a 32 bit Gentoo Linux, but I would like to know if this is a bad style to make so. I understand that a thread must be in one of the interruptable states. I came across a difference in behavior for Boost.Function between g++ 4.2 and 4.3, and I was wondering whether my usage was incorrect. I'm using default parameters in much the same way as the sample test.cc below. It compiles on 4.2, and does not on 4.3. I think I can see why perhaps it shouldn't have worked, but I'm just looking for a security blanket.
