Boost Logging v2 - new version (v0.13.6) The Boost Logging Lib v2 is getting closer and closer to its review (Feb 4). I've just released a new version, lots of new features: * added tags (attributes a logged message can have, like : line & file, function name, time, etc.) * scoped logs * caching messages before logs are initialized * high precision time (as tag as well) * added spacer formatter - you can specify what goes before and after your formatter * new formatter: named_spacer : Allows you to contain multiple formatters. You have a spacer string, and within it, you can escape your contained formatters * new destination : named - like named_spacer, but for destinations All in all, I've added quite a few features - so, take a look! TestUnit - builing hierarchical tests

Hello group. I want to use Boost.UnitTest library for my code testing. I went thru examples and I've found it useful and easy. It's easy on simple one-method one-file examples. My problem begun when I wanted to build few hierarchical test suites splitted into directories and files. I failed. There is no example on boost page - how to write them splitted in a few files. Only cases are pointers to functions in one file. I had problems including unit test header - I had multiple definitions of boost classes. When i removed header - there were no macros etc. Can anyone share a good practice - how to wrap example1 and example2 to one mainsuite? And use 3 files for it? Examples from tutorial: http://www.pdc.kth.se/training/Talks/C++/boost/libs/test/doc/components/uni… On a side note I find myself disappointed with Boost.UnitTest documentation. It isn't easy to follow (like I did for example with Boost.Regex) . Links to examples are broken on main site : http://www.boost.org/libs/test/doc/components/utf/index.html. But there's a mirror on http://www.pdc.kth.se/training/Talks/C++/boost/libs/test/doc/components/uni…. That's nice, but their latest revision is more than 4 years old! But when you google enough you find another one - author's own - on http://www.patmedia.net/~rogeeff/html/ revised 2007 (at least copyright is 2007). Is it the way Boost library documentation is meant to be? On a second side note I had no "main ()" function problem on debian. There were changes on 1.34.0 so it won't work anymore as documentation says. So I had to dig thru bug reports, mailing lists to find out author's personal note on these changes. As a library user I don't want to waste time googling, I want to use documentation and get it working. I belive Boost.UnitTest is a good work so don't waste it on a poor support! Program_options - allowing unknown options in configuration file

Hi everyone. I'm new to Boost and program_options in particular but so far it has been a joy working with the various boost libraries. Thanks to all the developers for their hard work! I'm using program_options to parse a configuration file but I need to have some options that are not described with program_options. Specifically, I need to use the same file for both my program configuration and also for configuring log4cxx. Each line of log4cxx configuration is of the form "log4j.option=value" and I can't limit the options that can be added to the program, so I can't describe them and ignore them afterwards. I know this is possible on the command line, by calling allow_unregistered() but I need the same thing for a config file, which I can't find out how to do anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction, please? Thanks in advance. Hello- absolute beginner here. I have the latest (November version) of visual studio c++ 2008 express. The header only version compiled fine. However the regex example fails with many unresolved external symbols. Do I need to build the libraries for this compiler? Or am I making some other booboo. I have had a go - following the instructions but so far without success. Grateful for any help. Chris Briscoe

And finally, as the introduction mentions the efficiency of the standard switch statement, could the docs show some performance stats for the library code for comparison? Hello boost users, I need some advice in using MPL and fusion. Lets take the following case for a typical Factory pattern (full compilable source code is attached): class Base {...}; class Factory {...}; template <typename T> struct Helper {...}; // constructor registers creation function for template parameter Now we have a template defining a family of derived classes: template <typename U, typename V, typename W> class DerivedUVW : public Base {...}; And a helper registration macro: #define HELPER_DERIVED_UVW(U, V, W) \ Helper<DerivedUVW<U, V, W> > BOOST_PP_CAT(h, __LINE__) (#U #V #W); And all possible U V and W classes in the combination game: struct A1 {}; struct A2 {}; // for U struct B1 {}; struct B2 {}; // for V struct C1 {}; struct C2 {}; // for W Now with manual registration its just a matter of patience: // Manual registration: // must type all possible combinations -> ugly HELPER_DERIVED_UVW(A1, B1, C1); HELPER_DERIVED_UVW(A1, B1, C2); // etc... To create the desired object just use Factory::instance().create("A1B1C1")->doInterestingStuff() And now the six million dollar question: Is there a way in which MPL and fusion can automatically do the registration? Here registration means the instantiation of template Helper with all possible combinations of DerivedUVW with elements from lists like: typedef boost::mpl::vector<A1,A2> Ulist; typedef boost::mpl::vector<B1,B2> Vlist; typedef boost::mpl::vector<C1,C2> Wlist; and registered with an appropiate name like "A1B1C1" Of course the objective is to easily add A3, A4, B3, C4, etc... to allow more combinations, without having to manually update all the registration code, ideally just the typelists. And, let's not forget variants DerivedUV or DerivedUVWZ with a different number of template parameters. I'm trying to think how I would do combinations for values in runtime and translate it to the MPL domain. Still no success. Any help, suggestions or comments will be appreciated. PS: the context of this problem is being able to expose a heavily templatized library to a user selecting the combination of template classes at runtime with a text string. I'm sure there's a suitable solution to this problem somewhere out there, or at least some hints to build my own solution...

Regex: Question about greedy/non-greedy precedence

Hello, I'm using boost::regex 1.34.0 and experience behaviour with mixed greedy and non-greedy operators in the same expression which I do not understand. I have either one of the following input strings: user1(a)hostname.com user2 and want to keep only the usernames, so I use the following expression: (.*?)(@.*)? with the format string $1. I would expect that basically the regex machine would first try to satisfy the greedy operator "?", and then fill up the non-greedy "*?" with the remaing part of the input. However, the following does NOT work (the hostname is not removed): std::string output; output = boost::regex_replace(std::string("user1(a)hostname.com"), boost::regex("(.*?)(@.*)?"), std::string("$1"), boost::regex_constants::format_first_only); However, if I omit the "format_first_only", it works as expected. base 64 encoding

Hi, I'm trying to encode base64 data by composing base64_from_binary with transform_width but this doesn't appear to work correctly when the data is not a multiple of 3 long. What is the correct way to handle this - do I have to handle the padding myself by extending the input data and then patching the tail of the result? Thanks Andrew

Serialization and polymorphism

Hi all, I'm trying to find a way to use Boost serialization with polymorphism but wasn't able to make it so far. E.g. I have an abstract class named ILog and two classes that inherits from it. Now I have a vector of ILog. How do I serialize this vector? Thanks. Ricardo

The simplest workaround would probably be to pad the encoded output to a multiple of 3 by adding 0, 1, or 2 '=' characters as needed. Help to design a thread server for boost::thread_group seems useless

It seems that thread_group doesn't perform any task after the thread termination (see http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/5694) and then doesn't manage the memory. SWIG vs Boost.Python vs PyCXX vs Py++

Hi there, After reading a couple of -outdated- references I am even more confused than when I started. I have been using swig for the longest time (not by choice), but I am given the opportunity to rethink this -bad- choice. I had heard lots of good thing about Boost.Python, so I decided to have a look at it. I realized that it is already replaced by another layer of abstraction: PyCXX or Py++ (is this correct so far?). So as of today could someone please let me know what are the main differences in between PyCXX and Py++ ? Our current built system is cmake and I would like to avoid adding a dependencie to bjam. What are the drawback of having a dependencie (link library) to boost (versus swig which does not have any). null_ptr?

Hi, Does boost have some sort of null_ptr class that allows you to do portable NULL comparisons? For example, the following isn't portable: char* foo = 0; if( foo != 0 ) { } But this is portable: char* foo = reinterpret_cast<char*>( 0 ); if( foo != reinterpret_cast<char*>( 0 ) ) { } You could easily create a null_ptr class with a few global template operators to make this easy, so you could do this: char* foo = boost::null_ptr; if( foo != boost::null_ptr ) { } Is there such a thing? Building boost with msvc 9 x64

Hello, i recently upgraded from msvc 8 to 9. Now I have to rebuild all my libraries, including boost. To do so, I am executing bjam --without-mpi --without-python --toolset=msvc-9.0_64 address-model=64 install bjam --without-mpi --without-python --toolset=msvc-9.0_64 address-model=64 clean in the Visual Studio x64 build command promt. I am using an own-built bjam executable using the nightly build code (1.1.08) and the boost files from the current CVS (1.1.08) Unfortunately, once the build starts, a windows message appears, asking me how to open "execution_monitor.obj.rsp". How can I fix this error? -Christoph I am using Windows Vista x64 and --------------------------------- Ihr erstes Fernweh? Wo gibt es den schönsten Strand.

Unfortunately, unlike a chained if/else construct there is no easy way to use it when the number of cases depends on a template parameter. The Switch library addresses this issue. [Serialization] Can I load two object from one input file?

I have trace into the code, I found when the testA11 loading, the "file_signature" is "serialization::archive", but when testB11 loading, the "file_signature" is empty. Why it like this? What should I do? May be there is the same question before I ask, but I don't know what keyword could be search, sorry. Thanks!

Hi all, I'm working on a project, it consists of 2 parts: application & framework. The application uses the interfaces of the framework which based on a OODB. Now, my task is to replace the OODB with a relational database. So, I have to do the serialization of the object by myself. I don't know how to design the DBArchive, since I don't know how to deal with the inheritance relation and reference relation between the objects. The DBAchive is different from the TextArchive, the letter is a stream, but the former's storage unit is a record that consists of the object's data members and the field name in the database table. If the recursive model of the boost serialization can process this case? Could you give me any suggestions? Thanks a lot! sjdf
