[asio] resolver::cancel() problem

In my application (and a separate test program) it seems as though the cancel() function on the resolver does not work as intended. For async resolves, the cancel functionality should abort them immediately and pass an 'operation aborted' error code to the callback handler. In my tests, I will resolve an invalid domain (this causes the resolve to take a few seconds, to demonstrate the problem), sleep for 100ms, then call cancel on the resolver object. No cancelling actually occurs, and the callback is simply triggered after a few seconds with a "No host found" error code, not the expected operation aborted. Has anyone experienced this before, or know how I might be using the resolver incorrectly?

[multi_array] operator= requires resize - why?

Hi! IMHO the behaviour of operator= for multi_array is a little bit broken. A lot of preconditions required: template <typename ConstMultiArray> multi_array_ref& operator=(const ConstMultiArray& other) { [...] // make sure the dimensions agree assert(other.num_dimensions() == this->num_dimensions()); assert(std::equal(other.shape(),other.shape()+this->num_dimensions(), this->shape())); Besides the fact that I get mad about asserts instead of exceptions (please change this to a way users may choose) why do we have such an odd behaviour here? >From page 1, line 3 of the docs I cite: "The interface design is in line with the precedent set by the C++ Standard Library containers" - this is not true for operator=, since std::<container>::operator= works fine for me all the time _without_ any resize. Could we please change the behaviour of multi_array::operator= to take care of resize where in need to? IMHO operator= should result in a true copy ignoring previous state. Markus

There are a zillion questions and implementation details open - but I'd like to get anyones feedback about this type of interface for iterators before continuing. Current questions: What is a good name for Foobar? Am I right when I think that Foobar needs to be declared in boost::serialization? Now the hard part (for me) is that part that involves the internals of the boost library. At the moment one tries to serialize an iterator, it is possible (though not necessarily) that the object that the iterator points to is already serialized. In the case that we are dealing with an associative container (map or set etc), we don't want to store the contents of the object (or key part, in the case of a map) again: I'd like to just store that once, and store a reference in the archive at the other place. How can I make the library store an object only the first time and the store a reference the second time? This would be for an object of arbitrary type thus. I think that it is only feasible to do this when it's actually the same object (same memory address), which is the case; but while storing the object element of the container, the address of it isn't stored as well, is it? Is there a way to make: std::set<SomeData> s; [...] ar << s; Store the address of s (&s) along with the contents of s? Boost Graph Library and Boehm Garbage Collector

Hello I am having trouble to garbage-collect adjacency_list<>. I have instanciated it with correctly garbage-collected vectors and lists (I have copied vecS and listS definitions, and added Boehm GC's default allocator so that they are garbage-collected). In my application I need to dynamically allocate many graphs, but it does not work, there is a (big) memory leak. Unfortunately, there is no template argument in adjacency_list<> to specify Boehm GC's allocator. Does anyone have a hint ? [statechart] history transitions make state-local-storage "un-cool"

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find any mention of it: I am currently using the history facility of boost::fsm. I've discovered that when I re-enter a state, X, via a history transition I don't actually re-enter the same instance of X that I was in before, but instead enter a newly constructed instance of X. I just checked the UML spec regarding history transitions and it says that "Any necessary entry actions are performed", so given that boost::fsm uses constructors to represent entry actions I guess a new instance of X has to be constructed to ensure UML compliance. My actual concern is the effect this has on the "coolness" of state-local-storage (see http://boost-sandbox.sourceforge.net/libs/statechart/doc/faq.html#Whats_so_…) It seems to me that state-local-storage, which I agree is generally cool, is particularly un-cool (and bug-inducing) in the presence of history transitions. I'm not sure what a good alternative is, but just thought I'd raise the discussion. cheers, mick PS: does the history facility display the same semantics in boost::statechart? [foreach][range] How would BOOST_REVERSE_FOREACH be implemented?

Boost.Foreach is such a great piece of kit that once you start using it you just can't stop. Indeed I like working directly with values rather than iterators so much that is feels normal for me to write something like BOOST_FOREACH( value_type x , make_iterator_range( rbegin( seq ) , rend( seq ) ) whenever I wish to reverse iterate over a sequence. My co-workers are not big fans of typing though, so they want a REVERSE_FOREACH. At first naïve glance it looks easy to implement in terms of the original FOREACH: template<typename C> inline iterator_range</* something */> make_reverse_iterator_range(C& c) { return make_iterator_range( rbegin(c) , rend(c) ); } #define REVERSE_FOREACH( x , container ) BOOST_FOREACH( x , make_reverse_iterator_range( container ) ) This works fine when container is an lvalue. But then co-workers, used to the wonders of the original FOREACH, inevitably start to use the new macro with rvalues and get a crash due to dangling references (- the iterator_range's members point to departed quantities.....) and if you could somehow work around that, there is the issue hidden inside the "/* something */" that you have to cope with fact that MSVC has no proper const rvalue detection. Finally the #define MACRO(x,y) ANOTHER_MACRO( f(x) , g(y) ) style is not recommended because they are brittle in the face of x and/or y themselves being macros. ... but all these issues are exactly the ones that BOOST_FOREACH itself solves! Thus surely it is technically possible to write a REVERSE_FOREACH that works with rvalues as well as lvalues, e.g. by essentially copying and pasting the FOREACH implementation and replacing "begin" and "end" by "rbegin" and "rend" in the vital places. However one feels there may be a better way... has anyone had a go at creating a "fully-functional" REVERSE_FOREACH and could offer me any advice? If indeed the task is fairly intricate and requires re-use of foreach internals, would the library author consider including something in the library itself? Many thanks for reading, Pete Bartlett

[serialization, ASIO] Assertion when serializing recursive boost::variant type

Hi, I have defined a recursive variant type like this: --- typedef boost::make_recursive_variant<bool, int, double, std::string, std::vector< boost::recursive_variant_ >, std::map<std::string, boost::recursive_variant_>, TGrey8Image, TRgbImage, TRgbaImage>::type TVType; --- and two containers which can store this type: --- typedef std::vector<TVType> TVector; typedef std::map<std::string, TVType> TMap; --- I wrote a set of unit-tests testing all types of plain and recursive containers and they work as expected. I also tested (de-)serialization to a binary archive and there's also no problem. Then I implemented a Message class which contains such a TVType + some other stuff. Serializing and deserializing also works in the tests. Finally I implemented a client and server with ASIO like the ASIO "serialization" example. First sending the size of the archive and then the data itself. On the webpage I read: In case if your test cases may throw custom exceptions (see here for list of exceptions translated by default), you could register translator specific for that exception. http://www.boost.org/libs/test/doc/components/utf/index.html So, if I understand it right, if I throw some custom exception in my test program and do not catch it, then it is catched by the boost test framework and reported in the proper way - if the exception can be translated by default. Now I look at the exceptions, which can be translated by default and see: In majority of the cases the monitored function doesn't need to throw the boost::execution_exception to report an error in the Execution Monitor. If you want a custom error message to be included into the execution_exception's error message, use one of the following C++ types as an exception: * C string. * std:string. * any exception class in std::exception hierarchy. http://www.boost.org/libs/test/doc/components/execution_monitor/index.html#… So, I can use a C string for my exception. I have written a small example test case and included throwing of an uncaught exception in it: try{ throw "blub"; } catch(char* ex){ throw; } As I started the testing process I didn't get a "blub"-Exception message, but Boost.Test internal framework error: unknown reason So, what's wrong? [Serialization] Problem serialization of derived classes

Hi there! I have a problem with the code in the attachment. I followed the documentation and the examples, but I did not get the code to work. Gcc produces a lot of failures that something is already instantiated in header files of the serialization library. Has someone a idea what I am doing wrong? I have just installed Service Pack 1 for VS2005, and am now getting a warning in some code using lambda::bind. There wasn't a warning previously, but I don't know if the issue is due to an update to the C++ standard library, a legitimate warning that they weren't flagging before, or a spurious warning. It looks like the issue is that I'm passing a function pointer, to bind. Is this a warning I should just ignore, or is this a legitimate issue? Thanks for your help! astar using namespace

I've removed the using namespace boost from the astar graph cities example. (I prefer to define namespaces explicitly). //using namespace boost; I've added boost:: to all the type names and it all compiles fine. However, some functions compile without the namespace. ie the following line: WeightMap weightmap = get(boost::edge_weight, g); Can someone please explain why I dont need a boost:: infront of the get?

Hi, I know there is the tracking level trait. I'm having problems compiling non-explicitly-declared mpl::set types. [program_options] add_options method hangs on Linux

Hi, I have a piece of code that runs both on Windows and Linux. I am using program_options library to read a settings file. This seems to work fine on windows, but on Linux the same code hangs when I call add_options method. I am using Boost 1.34 on both machines. Any suggestions on what may be causing this problem are greatly appreciated. Inga

problem porting code using spirit parser to v1.34.0

Hi, I'm having trouble porting some code to use v1.34.0 of boost. We are using the spirit parser and have found that strings containing trailing white space are not parsed as before. The following code is a simple example of the problem. This code works with boost 1.33.1 but not 1.34.0. Can anyone help explain why the code no longer works and what we should do to fix the problem? I suspect that other libraries have embedded boost tests. BUT 1) There is no test1 in my output. 2) How I can remove all unnecessary test and stick only to those in my files only? get all the elements with a certain value with multi_index

Hello I'm trying to use multi_index with an ordered_non_unique index. My question is how can I perform a search like with "find(key)" and get all the elements that match that key. Since find only returns one element that match, and there can be several in the container. I've tried to iterate "count(key)" times with the iterator returned by find but doesn't seem to work. Is there a way to do this? So my question is: is this a problem with me not understanding how to handle pointer-to-member-functions in C++, or is there something with the boost libraries that I'm missing or is preventing me from performing this operation? I can see in the documentation that I can call disconnect with a group_type and with a slot_type but not with a slot_function_type. problems building Boost.Python with cygwin

Hello all, I am trying to install the Boost.Python library (and then compile C++ python extensions after that) using cygwin and am not having much luck. I know I have the main part of boost working because I was able to compile and run the basic example for testing the boost configuration. [iterator_adaptor] typedef problem

In the private part of my own iterator adaptor called skip_iterator, I would like to write the following: private: typedef typename skip_iterator::iterator_adaptor_::difference_type difference_type; void advance(difference_type n); difference_type distance_to(const skip_iterator& x) const; because it looks nice. What I get from gcc 3.4.6 is strange: skip_iterator.hpp:22: error: `typedef ptrdiff_t skip_iterator<__gnu_cxx::__normal_iterator<float*, std::vector<float, std::allocator<float> > > >::difference_type' is private /usr/include/c++/boost_1_33_1/boost/iterator/iterator_facade.hpp:868: error: within this context However, if I forgo the typedef and write uglier code: private: void advance(typename skip_iterator::iterator_adaptor_::difference_type n); typename skip_iterator::iterator_adaptor_::difference_type distance_to(const skip_iterator& x) const; then it compiles and works fine. [Boost.Graph] Profiling using the graph library

Hello, I use the boost graph library (Version 1.33.1 of Boost) for my programming task. I wanted to profile my program with gprof. I compilated the source code with the -pg option and linked it also with that option. Now I'm examining the output file of gprof. Some functions of boost graph library are not explicitly listed there althogh I use them. These functions are: vertices() add_edge() What I see instead are some complicated functions. I have copied them here from my gprof-Output. But where are vertices() and add_edge()? Or are they meant by these complicated functions. [Boost.Graph] Visitors - dummy functions

Hello! I want to implement a visitor for the dijkstra_shortest_paths (...) algorithm. The visitor interface requires several methods which should be provided in each visitor object. But I need only one of these functions. So I considered to implement the others as empty functions like: void function(...) { } The problem now is, that as I apparently don't use the parameters, given to the function, inside of its body, the compiler prints out warnings about unused parameters. boost_regex with/without BOOST_REGEX_MATCH_EXTRA on same machine?

Hi! For an application I'm writing, I need the match_results::captures feature, which requires to recompile boost with BOOST_REGEX_MATCH_EXTRA. I did so and globally installed the modified boost-1.33.1 on my machine. However, several utilities installed on my machine that came with my Linux distribution (openSUSE-10.2) don't work with the modified library (including the yast2 package manager, which made it somewhat challenging to re-install the original version). So I have two questions: *) What is the recommended installation if applications requiring BOOST_REGEX_MATCH_EXTRA must be installed on the same machine together with applications that don't require this extension? *) Are there any chances that future versions of the boost_regex library will remove this compile-time distinction? Are the few extra bytes for the (unused) m_captures member in sub_match really such a big problem? I have written type safe wrappers around some math operations that I need to use everywhere and I expect and rely on them being equivalent to the handcoded or macro based approach for performance reasons. I tend to check the resulting assembly by hand every so often and it surprises me from time to time to see that inefficiencies have crept in. If I write a routine in C and a routine using the type safe wrappers that I expect to have equivalent generated assembly is there a way to test that this is indeed the case? Can anyone else think of a better way to make sure that register usage is optimal, proper inlining is occurring, etc? Thanks, Michael Marcin

ASIO: Detecting broken connections

Hi, I was wondering how I can find out with ASIO whether a connection is broken. I have a client connected to the server that continuously streams data. I have to know at the client-side when the server has hung up. I tried to use an async_write and after 5 erroneous tries the running thread for the connection is terminated. Cross-compiling boost for win32 on linux

Hi, I used to be able to cross-compile boost on linux for win32 with boost.build v1 without problems, but now with v2 I cannot find the mingw toolset. It seems that now we can use gcc toolset but with a mingw flavor. So, where can I set this flavor? Everything I do makes bjam use plain g++ (for building to run on linux), not mingw32-g++ (run on win32). Regards, Rodolfo Lima.

Hi all, I am using shared_ptr to ease implementation of a matlab file wrapper. Esepcially the fact that it is in tr1 and thus available on many platforms already pushed that decision. Now I was wondering about one thing: Is there a devent way, using shared_ptr, to hand out multiple references? What I mean is something like this: class Variable { shared_ptr<Variable> ref(); }; The problem with shared_ptr is, that, or so it seems, you can only create one directly from the object like this: shared_ptr<Variable> p(new Variable(...)); and all further references have to be created as copies of this (or copies of copies...). So I have to keep one of those around to make new ones. But I cannot keep one inside the class itself or else it will never be deleted (because it would reference itself). The same goes for weak_ptr, since there must be a live shared_ptr around for the object not to be deleted. The only way I can think of is implementing my own refcount and hooking into my own release method. THe problem with this is that I cannot, acoording to the docs, hook up the retain method, so each shared_ptr "cloud" (i.e. set of shared_ptrs that have been created from a common shared_ptr) is hooked up to one ref_count, so they might invalidate when the object stays alive, making any attached weak_ptrs useless. The other is using intrusive_ptr, but that a) is not in tr1 and b) does not have a weak ptr. I was also wondering why intrusive_ptr is not wrapped inside shared_ptr, i.e. why I cannot hook up both retain (increase refcount) and release into shared_ptr, but I suppose that is for the developers list. One other way I could think of would be that I keep a reference to the global ref_count of all the shared_ptrs, and creating new shared_ptrs on top of that, thus binding all shared_ptrs together, but that part does not seem to be exposed in the api. This is was I ended up doing when serializing a hierarchy of derived classes and a base class. Dear all, we have a simple problem: we want to know all vertices between a source and sink vertex in adirected graph. So my thoughts were to see if a vertex is reachable from both source and sink (by doing a breadth_first_search on the graph from source and a breadth_first_search from the sink on the reverse graph) and if reachable they lay in between. However this counts too much vertices. Consider graph So -> Si -> C. C is reachable from both So as reachable from Si using in edges. This is not good. The breadth_first_search should not perform an out_edge discover from Si. Do I have to implement my own breadth_first_search_with_stop or are there alternatives? Wkr, me

My idea is based on fact that you (program developer or another developer) know what is going to be send. What you are trying to do is erasing the type to some base and that would not work. So you send event must handle derived type and put it correctly to variant. Wave lib - MS compatibility issue?

Firstly hi everybody - this is my first post, and I'm just finding my feet with Boost:Wave. I've built and am playing with the wave driver (wave.exe) on an existing open source project, but I get an "error: ill formed preprocessor directive: import" error with the at a line: #import <msado15.dll> \ rename("EOF","adoEOF") \ no_namespace I thought this might have been an MS compatibility thing, as importing COM type libraries is obviously Windows-specific (and afaik #import does something different in GCC), but I've tried recompiling with BOOST_WAVE_SUPPORT_MS_EXTENSIONS (and have tried lots of other things) and it doesn't make any difference. Google hasn't shown anything up either. Does anyone know if I can turn this error off somehow?

the GNU libstdc++ offers a flexible character encoding convertion primitive (essentially a wrapper for the iconv C API), but in a non-standard partial specialization of codecvt. for example, if I want to use this codecvt, to convert between internal encoding UCS-4LE and external encoding GB18030 (which is China's national standard for Chinese character encoding), I will write // define the codecvt type typedef std::codecvt<wchar_t, char, __gnu_cxx::encoding_state> w_codecvt; // define a std::locale instance only for codecvt purpose std::locale loc(std::locale::classic(), new w_codecvt); const w_codecvt &cvt = std::use_facet<w_codecvt>(loc); // the internal/external character encoding is specified as the // argument to the constructor of __gnu_cxx::encoding_state w_codecvt::state_type state("UCS-4LE", "GB18030"); // use cvt and state cvt.in(state, ...); the problem is, if I want to use this codecvt<.., .., __gnu_cxx::encoding_state> with code_converter, I can't find a way to tell code_convert the encoding names (UCS-4LE, GB18030), seems that code_converter will always use the default constructor of Codecvt::state_type. And if I specify the Codecvt template argument of code_converter to codecvt<.., .., encoding_state>, imbue() will become a no-op, which makes things even worse. Sunpro CC 5.8, -library=stlport4, multi_index, one last time

I beg the indulgence of the maintainers to clarify the support intentions here and then I'll go back to my cave. The facts are: 1) The regression tests run reasonably on CC 5.8, with or without -library=stlport4 2) I have a seemingly simple example of using multi_index that won't compile with CC 5.8 unless I'm using -library=stlport4. The compile error, for what it's worth, does not point to one of the weaknesses of the 'old Sun STL' in any obvious way. But it could easily be that some ifdef that is trying to compensate for the old STL is in turn creating the conditions for the failure. (I'm not entirely sure about #1.) The question is: "Is it the intention of the maintainers to support CC 5.8 without -library=stlport4?" If the answer is 'yes', then I will nudge to get this case included in the regression, and I will invest some time in trying to unscrew the inscrutable error. If the answer is 'no', then I will concentrate on moving our Apatosaurus of a code-base to getting itself compiled with -library=stlport4 as soon as I can, and defer use of boost until that can accomplish itself.

Hi The BOOST_PP_SEQ_PUSH_BACK Macro expands to the seq with the extra element. But i don't want it to expand. I want to use the sequence later instead. How can i supress the expanding? I looked through the docs, but didn't find the right clue. I'm new too Preprocessorprogramming, so please excuse, if my question is stupid. Boost.graph : 3D graphics primitives hierarchy (scenegraph)

Hi, I am considering using boost::graph to represent a DAG of 3D graphics primitive hierarchy, much like a scenegraph in games with the exception that no drawing code is embedded with this structure. The DAG is important in that I will be injecting changes to certain nodes which than affects/updates all it's child nodes. The intention is to allow me to write tools to work with this hierarchy. Eventually, these geometries may be turned into renderable entities (via some visitor iterator) for visualization/verification but that is not the main purpose. I am very new to boost::graph and hope someone can point me at information or open source project that is relevant to my exploration. Regards

Dijkstra Visitor - Accessing the priority queue

Good morning, I'm trying to make a single pair shortest path function using the goal-directed search technique based on dijkstra_shortest_paths and Visitors. In some point when the target vertex is processed, I would like to exit dijkstra_shortest_paths.To do that I 'm thinking trying to empty the priority queue. Can I access the priority queue inside a visitor using something like an extern declaration, since none of the Dijkstra Visitor's methods gets the priority queue as an argument ? How to "splice" function arguments?

The rest of the CODE is completely identical. In other words, I want to transform the "false" case, at compile-time, to the following: void f(X *x) { Impl<false>::f(x); } template<> struct Impl<false> { typedef Detail<false> detail; void f(X *x) { // CODE X *t = detail::smth(x); // CODE } }; Now, I could manually duplicate all of the code in Impl::f(int, X*) into Impl::f(X*) and remove the extra argument in the call to detail::smth. Doing such specialization manually seems _very_ inelegant and error-prone (I'm not really a fan of copy-pasting the code :)) Is there a better way; ie. doing it automatically? If so, how? It is acceptable to manually overload the top-level f() function, as it has no other code except the dispatch to Impl::f. I want full compile-time solution; ie. I do not want the stack space for the unneeded integer parameter ever to be allocated. [The code for the "false" case will be called on every function invocation, so YES, performance DOES matter even without apriori profiling.] Signatures in the implementation of Impl and Detail are flexible and I can change them if it helps solving the problem. The only thing that I do not want to change are the signatures of top-level f() function overloads. Thanks, Zeljko.

[boost.test] Provoking a core-dump

I'm using the boost minimal testing facility - mostly because I do not want to build full boost. [I spent one day about an hour trying to figure out how to build a 64-bit version on Solaris with SunCC and failed. So I gave up. Besides, minimal testing facility is enough for me.] Is it possible to configure BOOST_CHECK or BOOST_REQUIRE to behave as assert? BOOST_REQUIRE throws an exception which eventually gets caught and the test just prints "failed". That's not what I want. I want that the message is printed and abort() immediately called so that I can inspect the core-dump and debug the problem. A quick&dirty fix is to add something like the following on top of each test: #ifdef BTEST_OVERRIDE #define BOOST_REQUIRE assert #define BOOST_CHECK assert #endif Is there another possibility? Ideally, there would be a command-line switch to toggle this behaviour at runtime. So the first run of tests in "normal" mode just gives a quick overview of everything, and another "diagnostic" mode (running with a hypothetical "-abort" switch) calls abort() as soon as any CHECK or REQUIRE fails.

Boost.Test internal framework error: unknown reason

Aloha, I have a strange problem when running the Boost Unit Test Framework on MacOS X (Intel). I'm using Boost 1.33.1 built from source with gcc 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5367). Compiling and linking of my tests works fine with: /usr/bin/g++-4.0 -arch i386 -Wl,-all_load -L$BOOST_LOCATION - lboost_unit_test_framework ... but whenever I try to run my test application I get a not very meaningful error message (the same code works fine on Linux and Windows): [Session started at 2007-06-11 13:06:27 -0500.] SAGA C++ Conformance Tests Boost.Test internal framework error: unknown reason saga_test_suite_v2 has exited with status 200. The error seems to occur somewhere within the framework initialization - the entry point (test_suite * init_unit_test_suite (int argc, char* argv[])) is never reached. Any ideas how to track down the error? Are there any command line arguments to make the framework's output more verbose? Thanks, Ole

Hello, I'm fairly new to boost and don't know all of the functionality. I have been using the serialization library, read about mpl, signals and that's about it. Maybe someone will have an idea if there is anything in boost that i could use to solve the following problem (or any other solution). I'm working a an Agent framework, and at this point, specifically on an event (messaging system). The basic layout is the following (what concerns the messaging part): The framework contains Agents and Behaviors. They all need to communicate with each other. Both of these classes derive from an interface EventReceiver, which declares, amongst other things, a pure virtual ProcessEvent(Event * event) function. Specific behaviors and agents are obviously derived from the base ones. All events are derived from the base Event class (to allow users to create their own events with whatever information they need in there). The main messaging hub is a class MessengerService, which contains two maps, the first one relates static UUID's of events to UUID's of receivers , and the second receiver UUID's with a list of actual events of type Event*. The basic use case is: a behavior calls a register function in MessengerService to add itself as a receiver for a certain type of event (register/unregister can happen at anytime). At anytime, a behavior/agent can create an event, and call a send function, which adds it to the list of events that are pending for a given receiver (if a receiver was registered for this event type). As all agents/behaviors are ticked, a "Monitor" is moved to the current agent/behavior. The monitor queries the messenger service for all pending events destined for the current agent/behavior, and calls a processEvent function on the agent/behavior passing it the event as an argument. The problem is here. I want agents/behaviors to add handlers for different event types that they registered for, i.e. class SomeBehavior: public Behavior { ... processEvent(EventTest1 & event); processEvent(EventTest2 & event); ... } Since the events were registered, i know that the correct handlers exist in the most derived class types (there will also be a forwarding scheme for unregistered or broadcast events). The problem is that i only have a pointer to the base class (EventReceiver) and to the base class of the event (Event). I can't cast directly because i don't know the type to cast to. Also, i don't want to add virtual functions for all possible events to the base class, because that would mean that users would have to play around in the base class (framework) every time they add a new event. Lastly, i wanted to avoid having a general processEvent(Event & event) function and then have the users "switch" on the event type. I solved part of the problem (the first half) by adding a "MostDerviedHelper", which looks sort of like this: template<class Derived> class MostDerivedHelper { .... void dispatchEvent(Event * event) { // Do dispatching here m_derivedPointer->processEvent(*(event->This())); } private: Derived * m_derivedPointer; } Each derived type has a helper, which obviously contains the correct most derived type (since it's itself). The problem now, is that i don't know what to cast the event to so that it calls the correct handler. I can't add the same type of helper to event, because then i would have to pass it the receiver derived type through a template, but since it would have to be a template, i can't call it using my base class event pointer (can't create templated virtual functions). I tried adding a virtual function called "This()" to all events, which would return the derived classes' this pointer, but eventhough it's the correct type, i still need to cast it (which i can't) since it has to be resolved at compile time. I read quite a few things about double/multiple dispatch (in Loki for example), but it's not quite the solution i'm looking for because a usual implementation uses a callback, and that would require that i make my handlers static. MPL is not much of a help either because it's based on static polymorphism, and what i actually need is dynamic. I thought of using boost function & boost bind combined with a double dispatch scheme, but this doesn't work either because then i can't serialize it (i could re-perform the binding after a restore, which i already do for boost::signals, but it's a hassle). So, i'm pretty much out of ideas. I think to sum it up, what i would sort of need is: template<class ReceiverType, class EventType> class Dispatcher { ... send(ReceiverType * receiver, eventType * event) { receiver->processEvent(event); } } In this situation, i would already have all the correct types. The problem is that i can't get all this info at the same time. I also thought about using the curiously recurring template pattern as such: template<class Derived> class Event { template<class derivedReceiver> dispatch(derivedReceiver, Derived event) { .... } } This would work, except that since all events now must specialize to some type of base, i can't use a base class pointer to store in my map, i.e. i can't store all of my events in a map. If anyone has some brilliant idea as to how this can be done (if it can), then i would appreciate the input. [wave] preprocessing error

Hello Hartmut, I have a question to you. I got a header file with an error. The content of a file looks like: #ifndef SOME_GUARD #define SOME_GUARD ... some content #endif SOME_GUARD As you see #endif SOME_GUARD is wrong, standard defines that #endif is followed by a newline. Unfortunately wave threw an exception. Calling what member on the std::exception instance caught resulted in the string: boost::wave::preprocess_exception I spent some time to search where that happened and which line was guilty. Is there any way for you to write the file and line which caused the error? I assume smth bad happens inside the wave lib, since I even can not compare curren and end iterator tokens. [ptr_container] How to transfer ownership from smart_ptr to ptr_container

Hi! Is there any smart_ptr and ptr_container that can transfer ownership of pointer, to avoid useless copy-construction and destruction of the object. More less scenario can be like that. 1. smart pointer handles pointer to the huge data. 2. pointer is transfered via signal to the object that has queue of them. 2a. remark not all object are going to the queue, so there is a need to keep them in smart pointer. 3. Queue sends away pointer, or internally destroys (respectively to demand of another signal in the program. More less the simplified draft is shown below. Maybe I have to use vector <shared_ptr <T> > instead of ptr_container? Need help understanding boost::operators::dividable

I'm sure the answer to this is out there somewhere, but I'm having trouble finding it. (wearing flame-retardant clothes...) I want to use boost::operators::field_operators to generate all the mathematical operators to allow Vector/scalar arithmetic. Everything works fine except for dividing scalars by vectors. Class Vector looks like this: class Vector : public std::vector<double>, boost::field_operators<Vector, boost::field_operators<Vector, double> > { // required operator+=, -=, *=, /= defined here. }; Now if I write: double x(3.0); Vector v(5), w; v[0] = 1; v[1] = 2; v[2] = 3; v[3] = 4; v[4]=5; w = 3+v; // works fine w = v+3; // works fine ... // subtract and multiply work on both sides w = v/x; // works fine w = x/v; // fails... I think the failure happens because of the way operator/ defined for mixed types something like this: T operator/(U u,T t) { T ans(u); ans/=t; return ans; } which is not what I need. Is there a way I can change the way operator/(double,Vector) works in this one case, but keep the really convenient definitions generated by field_operators otherwise? Hi! Could anyone tell me if there is any example where in e.g. metaprogramming there is a need of strict order of declarations and definitions of templates? Theoretically there should not be a problem, but maybe there are some tricks where order influence on fitting types and/or for lookup of specializations. Generally the question is related to the fact, that GCC force user to put typedefs and declaration/definitions in proper order before any usage of types. building boost with only one set of libraries

I have spent so much time to find how to build boost with only one combination of release/debug, multithreading, static/shared... that I want to record the method in the archive for other potential users. By default boost is build 16 times which corresponds to all combinations of: - release/debug - multithreading on/off - static/shared link - runtime static/shared link It takes ages to compile and we get roughly 1 giga-bytes of data. In general you need only one combination of these options but it is not very well documented how to set these options. There is internal dissention as to whether the toolset name is 'sun' or 'sunpro'. Bjam wants 'sun'. regression.py and the configure script want 'sunpro', and the configure script leaves 'sunpro' in user-config.jam with the unpleasant consequences I reported.

Is there a method to release all threads waiting on a mutex? Or, more generally, a portable way to release a bunch of threads at the same time? (boost::asio?) I didn't see anything in the docs, besides barrier. Unfortunately, I can't guarantee the N threads will be waiting when a flush is needed. thanks, graham

Hello, I'm having difficulty compiling the following code fragment using the Intel 9.1 C++ compiler. This little program mimics part of our application and the way we make use of the boost::variant class template. The build log follows at the end. Hallo, I just released a new version of bcbboost, the unofficial BCB Boost patches. This is a set of patches that improves Boost's support of Borland/CodeGear compilers. The current version supports Boost 1.34.0 and bcc32 5.9.0, the new compiler that is part of C++Builder 2007. That's true. However, I now have the meta-programming code that allows a function to reset policies that it knows aren't relevent to it to their defaults. Policy objects also get "normalised" internally to reduce code bloat, so: tgamma(x, policy1); and tgamma(x, policy2); are one-line inline forwarders that will call the same template instantiations internally, if there are no relevent differences between policy1 and policy2.
