Hi all, I am trying to use shared_ptr in my code, but, I encoutered some problems. boost::format concurrency issues on mac intel

I am experiencing some strange errors in a multi-threaded environment on MAC OS X, dual core. I am receiving segfaults, bus errors and illegal instruction crashes regularily with simple calls to boost::format operations. Disabling one of the cores on my machine will completely remove the errors (just fyi). If I add a mutex lock around the calls to boost::format in my sample code (inside the for loop of threadRun) then no problems occur. The following code can be used to reproduce the crash. It occurs perhaps one out of every 10 runs. It can crash (viewed by CrashReporter) in multiple places, mainly in ::parse(), and operator%. I compile with -O0. boost in a mixed CLR assemby

I realize it is not officially supported, but has anyone had success using boost libraries in a mixed CLR assembly? I am using visual studio 2005. I have been trying to accomplish this in an applicatation that has a Windows Forms front end, whose enire back end is build of libraries written in standard C++, making extensive use of boost, especially smart pointers and threads. The specific problem I am having involved initializing static variables. For instance, I have a global variable: boost::mutex osmutex; The program compiles and links fine, but during static initialization, I receive an error indicating _CrtIsValidHeapPointer(pUserData) is invalid. Looking at the stack unwind, the calling code is the "dynamic initializer for 'osmutex'". My suspicion is that the boost library is linking to a different run time library than my mixed code, and that the pointer being rejected is happening as a result of it coming from a different heap. I would like try to check this hypothesis by building boost forcing it to link to the correct C++ runtime library used by mixed assemblies (msvcmrtd.dll), but I am not familar enough with the boost build system to do this.

[boost::variant] problems with pointers

After much inefficient debugging, I've discovered that adding a pointer type to a boost::variant is a no-no. It appears to get translated into a bool via get<>, which throws a bad_get exception erroneously (at least in my opinion). The caviots of using a pointer type in variant really needs to be documented! It doesn't appear to be done so now. I've discovered that wrapping the pointer in a boost::shared_pointer is a solution. But it wasn't obvious.

[1.34.0] problem building bjam

Hi, I tried reporting this over in the .devel group, but it seems to have been filtered out by the moderator, as it never got posted. However, I believe this is a problem that needs to be addressed. Can someone else confirm this? The build script for building bjam with a Borland compiler on Windows assumes the compiler root folder to be C:\Borland\BCC55. Since my system does not use the free command line Borland compiler (and thus does not use the default path), I specified "borland" as my toolset on the command line: c:> build.bat borland This effectively disables the assumed path and attempts to determine the actual path to the compiler. It successfully and correctly determines the path to be "C:\Program Files\Borland\CBuilder5\," but the script subsequently fails to build, giving the message: [COMPILE] bin.ntx86\bjam.exe Error E2194: Could not find file 'Files\Borland\CBuilder5\Bin\..\Include.cpp' Error E2194: Could not find file 'Files\Borland\CBuilder5\Bin\..\Lib.cpp' Just prior to the error, the following is visible: c:\source\3rdParty\boost\boost_1_34_0\tools\jam\src>.\bootstrap\jam0 -f build.jam --toolset=borland "--toolset-root=C:\Program Files\Borland\CBuilder5\Bin\..\ " Indicating that a path containing spaces ("Program Files") apparently confuses the script. My solution to this problem was to create a path corresponding to the assumed path (using linkd to create a junction-point so that I didn't have to re-install the compiler!) and let the script guess which toolset to use. Fortunately, it guesses correctly (borland as opposed to msvc) which results in the assumed path of "c:\borland\bcc55" which then works, thanks to my junction-point. While I was able to get around this problem fairly easily, it probably would have been more difficult if I were not using NTFS (and its support for junction points). I'm not certain, but I would expect this to be a problem for any compiler whose path contains a space -- or did I miss something that is already well-known and/or obvious? - Dennis

Hi there, Surely if that was the case I would have received a compilation error. As it is my code compiles without any errors/warnings which makes me think it's a linker error or something else. Additionally the headers for boost are in /usr/include/boost so I don't believe I need to specify this include directive in my makefile The linking error is baffling me as everything checks out ok... Serialisation across libraries.

Hello all, I am a bit stumped by a problem I am seeing with serialisation, and wondered whether it may be due to the way I sue some libraries. I have two libraries, one which contains the main code that uses serialisation, and another which contains some small classes used by the main code. The main code serialises a tree like data structure containing some shared pointers, each node of the 'tree' contains member data, and its one of these members that is causing a double free or corruption error on loading. This particular member is a structure from the other library. It contains a serialisation template in the class header which appears to save correctly - the XML output all appears correct. However on loading the double free error occurs. I cannot see anything wrong with the code at all. The only thing I can think of is that there are limitations in doing serialisation across the library boundary. Perhaps I end up with two instantiations of the template for serialisation? One in the main library, and one in the small library? Am I clutching at straws? DO I somehow have to force the instantiation of the serialisation for the class in the sub library to be in there, rather than being created again in the main library? Any thoughts?
