hi ppl, i am new to using boost signals lib and have the following doubts: i have an event manager class which has a member function loadmap(). this class also has a signal s_ChangeMap to connect to the above function . now when i tried to do: s_ChangeMap.connect(&LoadMap); i get the following error: error C2276: '&' : illegal operation on bound member function expression the same error also occurs when i try to connect the signal to a function of a different class what should i do to get rid of this. am i missing on some understanding of the working of the signals system or is it something related to the scope of a connection?? please help me , thanx -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/signals-newbie-tf3257471.html#a9056554 Sent from the Boost - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

[multi_array] suggestion

Hello. I`ve been using Boost.MultiArray for a while and found that next features for MultiArray concept would be usefull. 1. Index permutations, which result is multiarray again. Most encontered in 2d dimential arrays used as matrices, and feature become matrix transposition. 2. This feature is possibly less agreed with Boost.MultiArray concept, nevertheless. It would be useful to have an iterator over all elements, not subcontainers, possibly with custom ordering differ from that used on construction for memory layout. Than i can easily use an STL algorithms on iterators. Having operation of creating subarray and array views i can manage wich part of multi_array object is exposed to algorithm. I hadly see an using of this iterator with stl::adjacent_difference as it interpret iterator as "really sequence", but in my work i will have some code look better using std::transform with such iterator.

[program_options] unknown options in config files

Hello! I'm using program_options to parse command line options and configuration files. I absolutley need the unknown option feature. For the command line options this works fine. However, the configuration file parsing always throws an option unknown exception when I parse cfg-files with non-registered options. Right right I circumvent this by catching the corresponding exception. But this is not very nice and I can as well not be sure that all options have been parsed in the cfg-file, depending upon the first occurence of an unknown option, right? So, is there a possibility to process unknown options in cfg-files? Thanks a lot in advance. Greetings, Sebastian

Boost in embedded systems

I know this sounds insane, but our developers are very happy with boost (who can blame them :-)), and want to have boost available on our embedded systems. We only have 64 mb of flash memory available for the entire system (OS, hardware monitoring and applications) and I simply cannot get boost down to a reasonable size. Am I trying to do an impossible task, or can somebody give me some good advice on how to build boost so it has a more reasonable size? Of course what should be done is removing some of the features, and I can probably negotiate with developers about what features we can provide and which have to go. Updated date_time_zonespec.csv for 2007?

Does anybody have a date_time_zonespec.csv file updated for the US DST changes this year? I've googled the mailing lists & looked at sourceforge (I see there was a bug raised 5 Feb, but no responses since). I also downloaded a 1.34 alpha tarball but there's no date_time_zonespec.csv file in there :-( . I've looked at updating the file myself (the syntax is pretty straight-forward), I'm just worried about missing particular zones. [signals] thread_safe_signals feature-complete

Hi all, I've finished thread_safe_signals. To get thread safety you have to include an additional header file thread_safe_signals/multi_threaded.hpp and set the last template parameter to boost::signals::multi_threaded. I've done a little benchmarking. With thread-safety off and connecting 10 slots, it appears to have about the same overhead as cvs boost.signals (which is much less than the latest release of boost.signals). When 1 slot is connected, it has more overhead, a little less than a factor of 2 when running a single empty slot. Turning thread-safety on increases overhead by about 50% for the 1 slot case and 100% for the 10 slot case. It is able to invoke slots concurrently though, which should be a win if the slot is non-trivial. -- Frank

any boost library for referring a portion of the container ?

Hi, I am having a few containers whose some portion I want to refer to another class (sometime I need to refer to a continuous portion, while sometime need a non-continuous portion) . At present I have written all of these myself. But wondering if a few portion can be substituted by some boost library. Just to make the concept clear, I am elaborating the structure and why it is done in that way. In the program it takes the user handwriting (as entered using digital pen etc) and analysis them. as user writes, I register points (x,y coord) and put them in an deque (in actual case I am using boost::circular_buffer_space_optimized ). Now, a second deque (or other container) stores another structure Trace, which has 2 index pointing start & end of that continuous writing until pen up occurs. These have to be 2 index rather than iterator, as iterator may get (and usually gets ) invalidated while more points are added in the point deque. Thus Trace refers deque<Point> Now from the trace structure I return the points for the trace (boost::sub_range ) using the 2 index and the deque (i.e from deque<Point> get iterator, add index as offset , make sub_range and return). Now these are the continues portions , referred by 2 index. Next, some such things can be even not continuous. In that case I store all index to which it points (in a vector ) and return a sub_range kind of structure (named index_range ) which takes these index and a container, and iterates over it jumping by those specific offsets. Example can be a Character class which refers some of those traces , not necessarily continuous (like user writes a dot much later than the i , thus Character i contains index of the vertical stroke of the i & dot ) Similarly more hierarchy are constructed, like Trace => Page, and Character => Word => Line => Paragraph => Page etc. Most of them contains 2 index and with the help of the container returns a boost sub_range , while some contains a vector of index (size_t) and returns index_range (created by me) . So far I found it is the ONLY way to create a level of hierarchy/ view from different set of dynamic data. (The other can be storing everything as a pointer in the container, and creating by new, in that case no problem arises as the objects are not movable, but in C++ it is quite bad solution) A Graphical representation is like, =============== deque<Point> ===================== <=remove old data => add new data | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | =============== deque<Trace> ==================== | 1 | 2 | =============== deque<Page> ===================== These are for continuous data (i.e 2 index struct & boost::sub_range ) ================ deque<Trace> ==================== |1,3,4| 2 | 5,6 | 7,9 | 8 | ... ================== deque<Character> =============== | 1,2,4, 5 | 3 | .... ================== deque<Word> ===================== | 1 | 2 | 3 | .... (assuming past a line user doesn't correct word, they can be made a pair of index ! ) ================== deque<Line> ===================== .... ================== deque<Paragraph> ================ etc... My question , 1) had anyone faced these kind of design , where a class referrers a portion of STL container ? and multiple view from same set of data exists (otherwise I could had Trace contains the points , instead of having index of the portion, if Trace is the only view for the points ) 2) Any boost library / other library is there to help these kind of design ? I had posted a same kind of topic in C++ newsgroup also, but it seems their people are more concerned with answering C++ standard based question . [boost::lexical_cast] problems casting hex numbers

Thanks a lot for lexical_cast it is a very useful function. Currenlty I face a problem with it and I think it would be useful addon ;) Unfortunately it can not be used (or I was unable to figure out how) to cast hex or octal numbers from strings to numeric. If it is not possible, are there some concerns which disallow this? the expression: lexical_cast<size_t>("0x015e") throws a bad_lexical_cast With Kind Regards, Ovanes

BoostCon 2007 update

A couple of quick items: 1. The conference format has changed. For many practical reasons, the "two 3-day tracks with one day of overlap on Wednesday" format proved unworkable. Among those: * Many (most) sessions don't fall neatly into the library-user/library-developer track distinction. We see this as a good thing, as it means we have more material that's of broad interest. * It made the hotel reservation pattern very difficult; we were afraid many people would be shut out of rooms at the conference hotel and also that the hotel would not be able sell the entire reserved room block, which could cost the (non-profit) conference a lot of money, as we had to agree to be liable for unsold room nights. Instead, we're running two tracks concurrently all week. We thought attendees should be prepared for that change. 2. We expect the new boostcon website will go live and registration for the conference will open in the next couple of days. We're just clearing away a few final details. Problem in building boost 1_33_1 on solaris 5.9

Hi, I am trying to build boost1_33_1 on solaris 2.9 with CC 5.5 compiler. Libraries like filesystem, serialization, program_options are not built. But other libraries like thread are built perfectly. Dear all I have question. to the type of object stored in variables_map. In the example multiple_sources.cpp There is line: config.add_options() //... ("include-path,I", po::value< vector<string> >()->composing(), "include path") ; But independently of the case all time result vector has size = 1, so in fact above is equivalent: config.add_options() //... ("include-path,I", po::value< string >()->composing(), "include path") ; And still there is some parsing job to do. How can it be improved? vc8 / 2005 linker problems in program_options

I'm having problems building programs with program_options and vc8/2005. I'm getting linker errors... any suggestions? I suspect I'm doing something obvious wrong. Linking against 1.33.1, I have $(BOOST_ROOT)\bin\boost\libs in "Additional Library directories". bjam crashes

Hi there. When I run bjam 3.1.12 or 3.1.13, bjam crashes. Any ideas, suggestions? I wouldn't be surprised if I'm doing something obvious wrong. interprocess on fedora core 4

When bjam is run on the examples folder on fedora core 4 it generates linker errors. Boost compilation error

I am not able to compile Boost libraries through command line (gcc compiler on Windows). It is giving the error: fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'boost/config.hpp': No such file or directory I searched on the net and found this is a common problem and should get solved by adding the path for Boost libraries to the include environment variable. But it is not happening. My observation is that its not identifying the path correctly. If I change the path manually (changing it to ‘”config.hpp” instead of <boost/config.hpp>), it proceeds with compilation. But that is not desired and practical. Can someone help me solving this problem? Thanks in advance.

[property map] copying dynamic_properties

Dear all, I have boost 1.33.0. It looks to me like boost::dynamic_properties (in dynamic_property_map.hpp) does not have a supplied copy-constructor, and so it has a default copy-constructor. However, since dynamic_properties allocates dynamic_property_map objects on the heap, and holds them by pointer, this is not sufficient. This is causing a segfault in the code pasted below. Either dynamic_properties should be given a copy constructor and assignment operator (which seems useful to me) or it should be noncopyable. Or perhaps it could use shared_ptrs instead of regular pointers to avoid this problem? Hi, just a short question: Why does not the zip_iterator header have the following (or something along the lines of the following) creator function: template <typename Iter1Type, typename Iter2Type> boost::zip_iterator<boost::tuple<Iter1Type, Iter2Type> > make_zip_iterator(Iter1Type i, Iter2Type j) { return boost::make_zip_iterator(boost::make_tuple(i, j)); } That would make creating a zip_iterator much simpler. Building Universal Boost Libraries on MacOS

Greetings, list! I'm trying to compile the boost libraries on an Intel based Macintosh. On my Intel Mac, I was able to build an Intel based version of bjam, which happily builds libraries for the Intel architecture. I want to link them to a universal app, though. Is there a way to instruct bjam to build universal versions of the libraries instead? I guess I could build the PowerPC libraries on my PowerPC Mac and them lipo them together, but I am hoping there is an easier way! Best regards, Finley

Timmo, In looking over signals/detail/threading_model.hpp, it looks like signals::mutli_threaded isn't thread-safe due to the way it uses scoped_lock. That is, scoped_lock is not thread-safe. I used a slightly different approach in thread_safe_signals/single_threaded.hpp (which provides a null mutex type) and multi_threaded.hpp (which provides real mutexes and is not included by default to prevent default inclusion of boost.thread headers). -- Frank

Hi, Say I have a function "int add(int, int)" and want to use it in a call to std::transform with zip_iterators. Is there a way to do it without writing an intermediate function object? If not, would it be sensible to write a generic one using the function_types library? Base and derived class for serialization (communication): class base { }; class derived : base { }; What would be the 'good' way to export/import serialized data? Can I do this with smart pointers? Hi, I want to tokenize a string based on one or multiple space or tab std::string s = " a b c d \te "; std::vector<std::string> tokens; boost::algorithm::split(tokens,s,boost::algorithm::is_any_of(" \t"),token_compress_on); copy(tokens.begin(),tokens.end(),ostream_iterator<string>(cout,"\n")); This gives more or less correct result, except it does not remove space/ tab from begin /end. It can be done like trim(s); and then call the above. But is there any other way it can be done in split itself ?

Hi! What performance characteristics can be expected from a thread_specific_ptr on various platforms, as compared to other synchronizing primitives? Does accessing it cost the equivalent of locking a mutex, or is it generally faster than that? Specifically, would the cost of accessing it be noticeable if one were to use it (naively) to manage detailed per-thread logging, generating many thousands of access calls per second or more. Hello, I'm using Boost.Signals to implement Deferreds (http://twistedmatrix.com/projects/core/documentation/howto/defer.html) An important feature of Deferreds is the hability to chain callbacks. Speaking of Signals, I want a way to call slots using args from previous slots calls. [mem_fn] Using mem_fn with std::bind2nd

The mem_fn documentation is clear that there may be problems using mem_fn with the standard binders: > mem_fn is not 100% compatible with the standard adaptors, although it comes pretty close. In particular, mem_fn does not return objects of type std::[const_]mem_fun[1][_ref]_t, as the standard adaptors do, and it is not possible to fully describe the type of the first argument using the standard argument_type and first_argument_type nested typedefs. Libraries that need adaptable function objects in order to function might not like mem_fn. Fair enough. The program below fails to compile with VC8 and g++ 4.1.1, and the VC8 error message (which I find much more readable than the g++ one) suggests that I'm running into the problem mentioned above. However, the program DOES compile using Comeau 4.3.8, and that's what confuses me. Does anybody have any insights into whether this code is supposed to compile? I'm especially interested in any remarks about whether it should compile using std::tr1::mem_fn, should there be any differences between that and boost::mem_fn. Boost: Regular Expression question/bug?

Hi, I'm trying to understand if a regular expression I've designed is working correctly. It seems that I can make the regular expression match work "off by one" character in certain circumstances. For instance: The pattern: ".{1,3}" finds 1 to 3 characters, however The pattern: ".[^b]{1,3}" finds 1 to 4 characters...? For some reason when I apply a "do not allow the character b" or any other bracket operator the {min,max} range value seems to allow for one additional character. I cannot imagine this being done on purpose. The work around is to allow one less then you really want (i.e. {1,2}) but I figured I'd post something and see if anyone has seen it or could explain what is happening. Maybe its just a bug. Boost serialization is used for both persistance & networking. Is there any easy way to add some "mature" storage system? boost::thread problems with Visual Studio SP1 & /clr

A while ago I posted a problem to the list about issues I was having using the beta Visual Studio SP1, statically linking to boost::threads and compiling with /clr ( http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.lib.boost.user/22464/focus=22617 ). SP1 has been recently released and the problem still exists. I resubmitted a bug report to Microsoft and they have marked the bug as [Won't Fix]. https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?Feedb… A workaround is to use the DLL version of boost::threads. This is not ideal, as I'd rather not have yet another DLL to cart around with my application. I'm guessing that supporting the /clr switch in boost isn't a high priority but it is the most straightforward way to integrate portable code ( communications, etc ) into a C# application. John

Boost::shared_ptr from void

Hi All! I am using a third party library where I enqueue a series of events. Each of these events allows the passing of a user context void*. I am attempting to pass the address of a boost::shared_ptr as my context. typedef boost::shared_ptr<CBuffer> CBufferPtr; for (i = 0; i < PREQUEUESIZE; i++) { handle = RegisterBuffer(buffer->m_pBCAMBuffer, m_AOISize); QueueBuffer( handle, &buffer ); // The second parameter is a void* user context data } In the above code "buffer" is my shared_ptr. Later, in my event handler I have the following: CBufferPtr buffer = static_cast<CBufferPtr>(result.Context()); This does not compile due to the following error in VS2005: 1>c:\boost\include\boost-1_33_1\boost\shared_ptr.hpp(125) : error C2440: 'initializing' : cannot convert from 'const void *' to 'CBuffer *' 1> Conversion from 'void*' to pointer to non-'void' requires an explicit cast 1> d:\sourcecode\test.cpp(1572) : see reference to function template instantiation 'boost::shared_ptr<T>::shared_ptr<const void>(Y *)' being compiled 1> with 1> [ 1> T=CBuffer, 1> Y=const void 1> ] The problem seems to be that the third party library call to result.Context() is returing a const void*. It also seems to me that my handler code is actually executing the overloaded operator=, and can never actually cast from a void* to a shared_ptr<T>. [asio] Using tcp::iostreams with Boost.Iostreams filtered_streambuf

Hi, I was wondering about tcp::iostreams. I need to have the ability to write code like: obj<< "Hello world" and at intervals (of size) have a header attached and then have it written to an open socket. I have been looking into Boost.Iostreams to do this, but I was wondering if rather than implementing the whole streambuf/sink, I could just create a filtering_streambuf (naming convention taken from Boost.Iostreams) - which would attach the header when needed - and just instantiate a tcp::iostream object with that streambuf. I'm still very foggy on the Iostreams library - and streams/buffers in general - but does that sound like it could work? Sorry about the vagueness, Darren

I just noticed that boost.signals declares signals::connection::disconnect() as a const member function. Can anyone explain to me why that was done? It seems like a non-const operation to me. That's how I declared it in thread_safe_signals, and it doesn't seem to cause any problems there. -- Frank

How to block a signal

Hi, I have a signal with many slots connected to it and I have a class object witch want to have the possibility to block this signal at the start and unblock it later, but know nothing about what and how many slots are connected to it (then can't use connection.disconnect()). program_options boost::bad_any_cast: failed conversion using boost::any_cast

Hi, since a while I always get this any-cast error when using program_options with type "std::string". to check it out I'd modified the simple example from boost for program_options a little bit (checking if any_type as it works - does, inserted a string-parameter). Compiling, starting with "--log astring" -> crash. starting without works at expected. (See appended source file) System is Debian etch, X86_64, gcc 4.1.2 20061115 boost: tried with debian package and self build variant. question now is: why? what may I do? As far as I remember on a unstable 32bit with gcc 4.0 it did work, but not sure if I got it running on a 64 bit system later. Hope for help Rajko

Hello, I new using boost. I am trying to setup a set of test cases to test some api. I would like to be able to use the logging facilities that boost provides through the unit_test_log class. I understand that from the command line you can set the logging parameters. However, I want to be able to set those parameters from inside the my program executing the test cases. any ideas? Specifically, I want to be able to send the log output to specific files (the files change depending on the test suite I am running), the format, level, etc. Thanks, Juan

Hi, I am at present using spirit for parsing unipen file as specified in http://www.unipen.org/dataformats.html . That is great and quite easy to parse, thanks to spirit. Now I am looking to use spirit for parsing an specific xml file ( w3c inkml file). So my intension is not to have a generic xml parser, rather than a specific xml parser (which also have some BNF grammar) . Anyone had used spirit for domain specific xml parsing? I believe using spirit will make it faster. Also I am interested to parse only a portion of the whole document at a time, and generate data from that portion only, rather generating data for whole DOM (The files are large, 4-20 MB typically) my xml file is something like, <page> <trace ref = "1"> 0,1,2,3,4,3,4,3,5,4,3,4 </trace> ... </page> note that inside <trace> the grammar is a BNF (comma sep float pairs mostly) Any comments, or snippets to show how to do it? -- Abir Basak, Member IEEE Software Engineer, Read Ink Technologies B. I'm curious about the realization of the boost::mutex class (especially on W32). * How heavy is it to create a mutex object? * Are there any limits (OS recource bound or other) to how many mutex object that can be created? * How costly is it to 're-lock' a recursive mutex? Almost NOP or more costly? Are these questions (and other of the same type) answered somewhere in the docs? Finally, a more concrete question. I can't find this in the documentation or on the web, surprisingly, so I thought I'd ask here: Should I be able to use "preferred syntax" with boost::signal using GCC 4.0? I get "ISO C++ forbids delcaration of 'signal' with no type" errors, and portable syntax works fine. If it's relevant, I'm using the Apple build of GCC on OS X 10.4.8. Best, Austin

Getting started with Boost::Date_Time ... It seems that this is OK: greg_year y1(2000); y1 = y1 + 1; but this is not: greg_year y1(2000); y1++; I take it that the increment and decrement operators are not implemented for greg_year (or the corresponding month, day, etc. types). Is this just incidental to the current implmentation, or is there some particular architectural or domain reason why ++ and -- aren't in the mix? - Steve

The modified version of Boost.Signals in the sandbox now compiles and passes the tests on my setup. Basic thread-safety is also in there, minus tracking and the combiner/signal-to-signal connection issues that have been discussed here recently. The thread-safe version will not support grouping and naming of slots, so there is a preprocessor flag "BOOST_SIGNALS_NO_LEGACY_SUPPORT" which changes the template signature of signalN. If defined, the Group and GroupCompare parameters are replaced with a ThreadingModel parameter (I chose to put it there and not after SlotFunction, but that may change). It defaults to signals::single_threaded which results in non-thread-safe behaviour. When signals::multi_threaded is given as an argument, the signal should be thread-safe. That is for now completely untested, though ;). As I was curious about the call performance, I ran a simple test, successively connecting up to 4 slots to the signal and calling it 10000 - 10000000 times. I used Visual C++ 2005 Express SP1 with /O2 optimization on an Athlon X2 3800+ for these tests. Results are in seconds. The comparison to the original CVS version is not quite fair, as I used dynamic linking there and static linking for the rest of the tests. I just did it to make sure my code was not significantly slower. The overhead for thread-safety does not grow with the number of connected slots, as I use a per-signal mutex and no per-slot locking. That looks good here, but I'm not yet sure it is the best solution in the long run. It would be nice to not block the entire signal for the whole time. As the new single-threaded implementation is somewhat faster than the one supporting named slots, I will add a signals::no_name type that can be used for the Group template argument when legacy support is enabled. That will result in the faster implementation being used without losing compatibility to existing code with grouped slots. Reports about problems with certain compilers and any kind of other input would be very appreciated. Don't judge too harshly on the code, I know it needs a lot of cleanup ;). Regards Timmo Stange

Performance of object_pool

The most important reason to use a memory pool is performance. BUT object_pool doesn't! When I use object_pool to construct a lot of objects, the destroy method become very slow. And I found object_pool use ordered_free to free the memory, and it amortized O(N). It is a very serious problem, I hope it can be fixed in the next release. thanks.

Hi. I am new to Boost, and beginning with compiling example code for Boost::Date_Time. I've had success compiling the many examples given here: http://www.boost.org/doc/html/date_time/examples.html but the very first example given here: http://www.boost.org/doc/html/date_time/examples/general_usage_examples.html I cannot compile without errors. (Code given below) Changing week(1) to weeks(1) got me past the first hurdle, but still not home. The problem seems to have something to do with 'Sunday' not being of the correct type, but I'm not truly certain what is going on, hence this post ... As background, I'm using the MS VC++ 2005 compiler and Boost 1_33_1. This example fails compilation from both the IDE and the command line. I'd appreciate any insight into what would be needed to get this example to correctly compile and run. (And if there is a flaw in the example, I'd suggest that the docs be fixed to provide it in working form.) Does boost have something to support binary data streams?

I commonly need to write and read binary data from files. The streams in the standard library are very tedious to use for such tasks. I'd like to be able to construct a stream thats loads a little endian binary data file and use it to write/read data with the insertion/extraction operators on big endian or little endian systems. Hello everybody! I'm using the property_map scheme to pass some data-structures to vistors of BGL-algorithms. So far I usually use a vector in the manner: std::vector<std::size_t> props(num_vertices(my_graph), 0) Then I do something like bfs_search(..., make_my_vistor(&props[0]), ...) which works ok and passes me a correct property_map into the visitor created by make_my_visitor. Within that visitor I can then do the usual stuff like put(the_props_map, vertex_id, someValue) At least that's how I understood, how the property_map concept works. However, if I use a bit-vector the above scheme breaks down to work: std::vector<bool> bit_props(num_vertices(my_graph), false) bfs_search(..., make_my_vistor(&bit_props[0]), ...) The compiler compiles these lines, but complains that a temprorary is passed as a reference to make_my_visitor and the code generated crashes. My system is a Ubununtu Edgy with boost 1.33.1 and g++ 4.1.2. Any ideas why this happens and what I can do here? Thanks a lot in advance. Greetings, Sebastian

serialization stream error

I am trying to use the boost serialization library to save an objects from a class heiarchy. I keep running into a stream error when deserializing a pointer from an xml archive. I have everything registered (that took a while, but I have that problem figured out, I think), and the serialization to an xml archive seems to work just fine. I have stepped through the deep nesting of calls to the exception and it is being thrown because the stream says it is bad when trying to read the end tag. I also tried it with text archives, and I get the same problem. I have done the obvious (to me at least) things such as class export/registration, us std::ios::binary for output/input stream instances. Any advice on how to track down this problem with a stream error? I have gone back to first principles with a simple example and that all seems to work. So it is obviously user error. I am trying to understand what is wrong with my more involved case. I appreciate any advice someone could give me.) Thanks, Phil

easy serialization question

Hi, I'm using the boost serialization methods, they're great. I'm using some 3rd party classes that I don't have access to, so I can't add a serialize() member function to them. [boost-users] [interprocess] Using semaphores to synchronize startup

Hi, I am trying to use Boost.Interprocess to get N processes (senders) to send data to one receiver through shared memory. The receiver has to be the one that initializes the shared memory, so no senders can be "let in" before the receiver has completed initialization. I can't guarantee the order that the processes are starting in. To do this I have both the receiver and the senders create_or_open a named_semaphore with 0 as initial value. The senders then immediately do a wait on the semaphore, but the receiver goes ahead and initializes the memory and then does a post on the semaphore. This lets the first sender in, which can then initialize itself and then do a post on the semaphore and start running. The second sender is then let in (because of the post) and it can get going and so on. This approach works very well if the semaphore has been manually deleted from /dev/shm/ or c:\temp\boost_interprocess\, but will not work if there is an old semaphore around. I can get around this on Windows by doing a named_semaphore::remove, since that will fail if a process has got it loaded. But this same code will not work on linux, since the semaphore will be unlinked and then all the processes will be able to delete the semaphore and will then be using different semaphores! I am used to semaphores working so that if it is opened when noone has it loaded it will be initialized to some known value, but this does not appear to be the case with Boost.Interprocess semaphores? Is there something obvious that I've missed, or some other way of accomplishing the same thing? Cheers Lars

Hi! Is it possible to serialize a class A by pointer using a custom allocator? (Not the custom in-place allocator approach). I'm trying to serialize the (OpenCV) class IplImage. The class is used like this: IplImage* img = cvCreateImage(...); ... cvReleaseImage(&img); I've tried the following: template<class Archive> inline void load_construct_data(Archive & ar, IplImage * img, const unsigned int file_version){ ... IplImage* tmpImg = cvCreateImage(...); memcpy(img, tmpImg, sizeof(IplImage)); } But I get exceptions later, when releasing the loaded image. As far as I can tell, the image class data is identical before and after serialization, so I guess that the cvCreateImage/cvReleaseImage keep track of pointers somehow and things go bad when the ReleaseImage is called by a pointer not returned by the CreateImage function? Can the allocation of the IplImage used as input to load_construct_data be customized somehow? I also tried using an IplImage * & as input to load_construct_data: template<class Archive> inline void load_construct_data(Archive & ar, _IplImage * & img, const unsigned int file_version){ _IplImage* tmpImg = cvCreateImage(...); delete img; img = tmpImg; } But that screws up the (de)serialization. But looking at Boost.Test I did find BOOST_PARAM_CLASS_TEST_CASE( test_class_method_pointer, first_parameter, last_parameter ) method that caught my attention. The question I have for you is this: Can I pass an instance of a class (that contains all the requisite data I parsed from the XML file) to a test method. Hi, Is there any boost utility which statically determines if a template parameter is const or not? ( MPL library ?) I need to design something like boost::sub_range, but little different (It will iterate over arbitrary sequence stored in a vector form, rather than a sequence stored in pair form). like, template<typename C> class index_range{ private: C* container_; std::vector<size_type> index_; }; container & index will be passed through constructor. I'm working on a preliminary solution for an interface-compatible but thread-safe implementation of Signals for my project so that I will be able to switch to Boost.Signals should Doug Gregor find the time to add thread-safety there. While deciding what parts to include and which to leave out, I noticed that the automatic connection management is probably not usable in a multi-threaded context in the current form. Using a base class destructor (signals::trackable) to monitor an observer's lifetime is bound to result in race condition trouble with the order of destruction in a class hierarchy. Has that been discussed somewhere and are there any proposed solutions/alternatives? Regards Timmo Stange

Hi, I'm using the boost library filesystem on Windows XP and Solaris 9 and 10. I haven't had any problems with Windows so far. When linking my executable on Solaris 9, the linker warned me that the filesystem library I linked wanted to be linked with libm.so.2, which isn't on my Solaris 9 system. The executable still runs but when I use filesystem to list the files in a directory it doesn't list all of them. I was able to link on Solaris 10, but there I am getting a core dump when I run. Has anyone ever had similar problems on Solaris? thanks, matthew

Boost.Thread contained within a class?

Hello, I have a question about Boost.Thread. I am trying to create a class which upon instantiation creates a thread based upon itself, and then on destruction, stops the thread and cleans up after itself. A simple example is below. Is this possible, and if not, what alternatives do I have? The reason for this is to create a single external API (actually defined in a base class), and still have a background thread (hidden from the API) which can share that object's internal member variables. Hello, I wonder if anyone could help me with my problem. I'm trying to serialize my project's data. Beeing new to the boost libs I started with simple tutorial example. Today is the 3rd day I'm unable to launch a serialization of an object of the simpliest Vertex class containing 2 double values. Hi Andreas, Your solution will not work in my application. I use an io-framework which has some requirements that could not be fullfilled with the creation process of an asynchronous_state_machine. asynchronous_state_machine is derived from state_machine - does this mean that asynchronous_state_machine provides only a thread-safe access to state_machine (acts as a wrapper)? In my application I've three event sources (io-device, UNIX-signal handler, trigger which periodically produces events). Each event source runs in ist own thread. I could use a state_machine and synchronize the insertion of events (process_event() function) via a mutex. Would asynchronous_state-machine provide a preformance benfit in this case? Would it be an adequat solution to queue the events from the three event sources in a thread-safe queue (producer-consumer pattern)? The threads providing events act as producer threads) and should not be blocked and the processing of the events (calling state_machine::process_event()) will be done snychronous (maybe by one consumer thread). Problem Using Bjam V2

Hi all, I've been using bjam v1 in 1.33 to build my Boost, and everything went smoothly. I tried lately to grab the latest Boost from CVS in order to preview its upcoming feature, but I faced problems building it using the new bjam v2. My system: Windows XP Pro SP2 Compiler: MSVC 7.1 First of all, I'd like to build Boost with STLport 5.1.0 (the latest STLport release). In the old bjam, I could use the vc_7_1-stlport toolset to activate STLport. In the new bjam, I found that the <stdlib> option was always set to "native" when I run bjam with --debug-building. (I've enabled "using stlport" in user-config.jam".) So how do I activate STLport? Secondly, I downloaded Zlib and Libbz2 source and wanted to build Boost.IOStream with zip and bzip2 support. In the old bjam, I could set ZLIB_INCLUDE, etc. environment variables and then Boost will find the necessary headers and libraries. In the new bjam, I always get an error complaining zlib.h not found even though I've already set the environment variables properly. How do I go about doing this? Lastly, due to our project requirements, I need to provide some customized compiler options when building Boost. In the old bjam, I could use -sBUILD=<cxx-flags>option to do so. But these flags doesn't seem effective with the new bjam (I don't see them when using -d+2 to check the compiler parameters). So how do I go about doing this? I've been trying to work out how to add the capability to have different timezone rules in different years to the library. It seems to me it's not too hard (although I'm nervous of making such a judgement in code I'm not familiar with). I think all that's needed is: 1) In class custom_time_zone, the rules should depend on y, rather than there just being one set of rules. 2) The date_time_zonespec.csv file would have to have extra columns for years a rule applied to. tz_db_base::parse_string would have to parse them, and instead of creating a new timezone for each line, add the rule to the appropriate timezone if it had already been seen once. Is there anything else that would need to be done? Actually, I think the hardest part would be populating the date_time_zonespec.csv file. Is there already a program to generate that file from the zoneinfo files, or was it done semi-by-hand?
