Hello I am having trouble to garbage-collect adjacency_list<>. I have instanciated it with correctly garbage-collected vectors and lists (I have copied vecS and listS definitions, and added Boehm GC's default allocator so that they are garbage-collected). In my application I need to dynamically allocate many graphs, but it does not work, there is a (big) memory leak. Unfortunately, there is no template argument in adjacency_list<> to specify Boehm GC's allocator. Does anyone have a hint ? [statechart] history transitions make state-local-storage "un-cool"

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but I couldn't find any mention of it: I am currently using the history facility of boost::fsm. I've discovered that when I re-enter a state, X, via a history transition I don't actually re-enter the same instance of X that I was in before, but instead enter a newly constructed instance of X. I just checked the UML spec regarding history transitions and it says that "Any necessary entry actions are performed", so given that boost::fsm uses constructors to represent entry actions I guess a new instance of X has to be constructed to ensure UML compliance. My actual concern is the effect this has on the "coolness" of state-local-storage (see http://boost-sandbox.sourceforge.net/libs/statechart/doc/faq.html#Whats_so_…) It seems to me that state-local-storage, which I agree is generally cool, is particularly un-cool (and bug-inducing) in the presence of history transitions. I'm not sure what a good alternative is, but just thought I'd raise the discussion. cheers, mick PS: does the history facility display the same semantics in boost::statechart? BGL: INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR in VC7.1

This one was already posted by Nicholas Burlett awhile back (see http://lists.boost.org/MailArchives/boost-users/msg06534.php) but I have some new info that may help. The problem: ========= When compiling code that uses the boost.graph library the VC7.1 compiler shouts: c:\boost_1_32_0\boost\mpl\aux_\preprocessed\plain\apply_wrap.hpp(48) : fatal error C1001: INTERNAL COMPILER ERROR As Nicholas already noted, this seems to be due to some compiler problem with the boost.graph out_edge_iterators since it is caused by the following lines in my code: (FilteredGraphGenerator::FilteredGraph is a typedef of a boost::filtered_graph) typedef boost::graph_traits<FilteredGraphGenerator::FilteredGraph> ::out_edge_iterator oedge_iterator; oedge_iterator edgesItr, edgesEnd; boost::tie(edgesItr, edgesEnd) = boost::out_edges(itr->first, m_g.m_filteredGraph); while (edgesItr != edgesEnd) { // do anything! } In fact, it seems to be related to the operator!= between iterators (if the while loop is commented out it compiles). How can we serialize pointer of type base abstract class pointing to Derived concrete class

We have a situation where there is BaseAbstract class and Derived concrete class. Interface requires that we pass BaseAbstractClassPointer, using which user can provide any of Derived Concrete class pointer and Interface remain generic to them. I am having exactly the same problem as a previous user. Could you please show me how you fixed your boost build? I'm getting the following errors ...failed updating 120 targets ...skipped 80 targets... ...updated 847 targets... I don't know how to open the vsvars32.bat file in order to change the paths that Mr Kozicki suggested. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have installed the latest SDK. Also, how do i get rid of the warnings? I know i need to define _SCL_SECURE_NO_DEPRECATE globally, but how do i do that exactly? Finally, how do i know i have a correct build install? vertex descriptors

Dear all, Sorry for the newbie question! Given the index of a vertex, how can I get its descriptor? I guess function vertex (page 225 of The Boost Graph Library) does that but the function is not defined. In fact, what I want to do is to check whether an edge belongs to a graph in a context where descriptors get invalidated after vertex removals? [BGL] how to actually search with DFS/BFS?

This may seem like a silly question, but how does one actually search with DFS or BFS? Say I want to find the first node for which a predicate returns true in a BFS traversal starting at node N... The function signatures don't have a parameter for "criteria" or "predicate", so I guess it's up for a Visitor to implement such a check. What is not clear to me is how the visitor functions can break out of the search once a condition is true. Building boost for 64-bit on AIX

Hi, I'm trying to build boost (1.32.0) on an IBM SP2 under AIX5, using the 64-bit ABI. This is troublesome. I do: bjam "-sTOOLS=gcc" "-sGXX=g++ -maix64 -pthread" --prefix=$HOME --libdir=$HOME/lib64-gcc --includedir=$HOME/include-gcc install But it doesn't work. case insensitive less_than string comparison

Hi, I am aware that string_algo has an if_iequal functor. Is there also an equivalent for a less-than comparison? I have to compare strings ignoring the case but taking locales into account. Right now I'm calling boost::algorithm::to_lower on two copies of the original strings. I'm not so sure if this is very efficient when I'm comparing thousands of strings. David, At the risk of annoying some Boost developers... My single biggest complaint is the Boost documentation-- not so much that the libraries are undocumented, but that it's so hard to find your way through the documentation that is provided. There is the documentation on the Boost site rooted under Libraries | Documentation. Then there is the documentation under doc/html in the Boost source tree. Then there is the documentation under libs/<libraryName>/doc in the source tree. Sometimes, they are the same, sometimes, the libs documentation has extra stuff. Why? A side effect of having HTML documentation is that there is no index--a valuable tool when you are trying find your way through new territory. The Boost documentation standard recommends having a table of contents-like list of topics on the first page of a library's documentation. Sounds good, but since there usually isn't any paragraphing levels shown, what you get is a list of topics, some of which repeat with no indication of which are subtopics of which. The naming of documentation files can be misleading also. The discussion of mutexes (with no specific mention of threads) is called "thread" while the discussion of threading (with no specific mention of mutexes) is call "threads" [note the plural]. Or, maybe it's the other way around. The available documentation takes a scatter gun approach at to the intended audience. Under mutexes (whatever its name), there is a treatise (as I remember) on all possible mutex alternatives. It's only later that the reader discovers none of them are actually implemented. Similarly, the serialization documentation has a long discussion on shared pointers in a file named shared_ptr.html. Another file named shared_ptr2.html starts out by saying that about the stuff you just read in shared_ptr.html "Unfortunately, this way of doing it suffered from some undesirable features." This is a lot like giving someone detailed driving directions only to say, "if you go this far, you've taken a wrong turn." The documentation is written so that in order to do almost anything, you have to read everything, including all of the "here are all the wrong turns I took in developing this library" pages. For example, the documentation for the serialization library seems straightforward, but you'll probably miss the special macro you are supposed to use if you are serializing an abstract class. The Boost documentation is serverly in the need of global editing. Merrill

I'd had friends & coworkers mention boost, but to the new visitor, the website (as clean and readable as it is) doesn't do a good sell job for the product. It starts off well, saying that there's some sort of libraries to be had in here somewhere. But the first eight links the reader encounters have nothing to do with explaining why it is you might want to use these libraries. The ninth link, "Background information page," finally gives us a teaser, claiming our productivity will increase, but we still don't know why. Only the intrepid explorer who delves into the tiny "Documentation" link on the main page will be rewarded with a catalog of functionality. In short, I think the main page, the page that should be grabbing the casual surfer's attention, should at least highlight some of the functionality the consumer can expect from boost (cross-platform serialization, anyone? How about containers done right, or a well- designed thread package?), instead of devoting real estate and reader attention to links to random unix distros. Cheers, tob

Unable to figure out how to get zlib support in iostreams on windows

Hi, I've posted this on the boost build forums, but never got a response, so I'm hoping someone in this group can help me. I've spent several days banging my head with iostream zlib support on windows. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get this to compile. This is on a windows XP machine with Microsoft VS 2003. I've installed the zlib source at C:\dev\zlib and set the appropriate command line arguments (I believe anyway) to point to it. However, it continues to give me an error of "unknown dependent target <@boost!libs!iostreams!build>libboost_zlib.lib" If I remove the zlib command line arguments, the boost library builds fine. Can anyone please explain what I'm doing wrong? I'm sure it is something simple, but I cannot figure it out. I looked at the jam file regarding this and it seems to indicate that it will compile zlib automatically. But apparently that isn't happening. The complete output from the command window follows. A problem with '^' and '$' in boost regex

Hi, In boost document I saw that the '^' matches all the blank chars in the begin of line and the '$' matches all the blank chars in the end of line. Just like regex( "^abc$" ) can't match the string " abc ". What's wrong? -- Yours Sincerely, Alan Huang

[serialization] suggestion for the extension of the functionality

Hello I would like to ask for consideration of some new functionality for boost::serialization. If I have a stream and I do not want to close the stream at the end of serialization I have to make easy, but nasty trick using stringstream as a buffer between my stream and serialized stream. More concrete example. I'am using easy library for sockets. Connection is represented as stream and after connection I do not want to close it. So when I try to use serialization though the socket, serialisation is hanging - it is waiting for the end of the stream, but there is no end of stream because it is socket. It will be useful just to add to library one fuction for manual sending data - "simulation" of the end of stream. To avoid or closing socket either using stringstreams buffers. Below is example code for this problem - this code is using buffers, but IMHO better will be that inside library will be functionality for such a situation. Best regards, Seweryn Habdank-Wojewódzki. Compiling boost with vacpp 8.0 as 64bit on AIX5.3ml3 of power5

Hello, I need to compile boost as a 64 bit program using vacpp 8.0 compiler, on AIX 5.3ml3, power5, p5-550 and p5-595. I can compile boost with vacpp in 32bit mode fine, but all my attempts at compiling it 64 bit have not resulted with any success so far. The vacpp toolset does not offer any options and does not allow for any options or configuration variables. I do not understand the syntax of the vacpp-tools.jam file or (bjam in general) and cannot edit the file with any success. trying to install Boost 1.33.1 on Solaris 5.9 + SunStudio 11

David, Having an introductory video to _Boost_ is problematic since there's no one thing called "Boost". Instead, it's a collection of often disparate libraries. Each of the libraries could reasonably be featured in its only "getting started" video. However, if the point is to _sell_ the whole Boost idea, then one alternative would be to bypass the details of syntax and function calls of the various libraries in favor of a "Why do you need Boost" talk/pitch/video. Talk about what kind of everyday problems it solves for you rather than trying to explain the nitty gritty (and 200 levels of nested template declarations) of each library. The pitch would verbally sketch (i.e. probably no code) a real world programming problem, then point out what the Boost library has to help out. A series of problem sketches would allow the pitch to cover a lot of otherwise disjoint Boost functionality and still make sense. Merrill

[BGL] adjacency_list: OutEdgeList vs EdgeList

Hi, I can't understand the difference between the OutEdgeList and EdgeList adjacency_list parameters. I think the documentation is unclear about EdgeList (especialy http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/using_adjacency_list.html which has a section about "Choosing the Edgelist and VertexList" but only OutEdgeList and VertexList are present in this section) I need fast access to edge_properties from edge_descriptor. But I couldn't find if OutEdgeList or EdgeList container is used for the operator[] ? I read that EdgeList doesn't exist in previous version of the BGL and OutEdgeList was called EdgeList. Hello! Is it possible to expand the filesystem documentation? ---8<------------------------ Native paths should be created with the 'native' argument, like this: boost::filesystem::path p("C:/test.txt", native); ---8<------------------------ For a novice it's impossible to create a path objekt with a native syntax because it's missing in the beginner tutorial. I have tried to create a path object and I got only exceptions. After a long journey in google and the boost mailinglists I have found a source example with the native argument. The documentation of boost::filesystem doesn't explain this part in the beginners guide as expected. Of course it is explained in the detailed documentation, but this is to far away. ;-) I hope my suggestion will be accepted. Thanx! :-) Best regards Amin

Compile error with serialization

I'm using Windows XP with Visual Studio 2003. I've compiled boost 1.33.1 successfully with bjam and installed the libs and DLLs into my environment. I started playing with the serialization library. I created a win32 console project and copied in the demo.cpp serialization program. It compiles and runs just fine. I then started added serialization to my own project and started running into problem after problem. I've since commented out all my own code except for the following: I copied the gps_position class directly from demo.cpp into my project.
