Ahem, could someone please answer my simple question: Is is possible to compile programs which use Boost and STLPort (instead of Microsoft Foundation Classes) with the Intel compiler, on Windows? I am getting all kinds of weird errors which relate to streaming operators, which makes me think that my usage of STLPort might be involved? On the other hand, if I use MSCV6 instead of Intel compiler (7.0) I do not get the same errors. It seems that some of our in-house software can't be compiled with MSVC6 because of problems this specific compiler has with templates. The same code compiles without problem on the latest GCC compilers. One other thing I should point out to you about building, or actually lack there of, inside MSVC. Intel doesn't know how to generate the PDB files themselves, so they call MSVC's cl to do it for them. This is a problem because if cl can't build the file, it doesn't generate any dependencies for it. If you use templates that MSVC can't handle, you'll probably want to switch to makefiles. We did. Release builds and C++Builder

Does doing a release build of the boost libraries define NDEBUG. (don't know if this is standard) but in C++Builder, NDEBUG disables asserts so it is useful to define it when doing release builds. Thanks Russell

lambda library: How to access member variables?

MPL and apply_if trouble

I encountered the following problem today which I've reduced down to a simple example. Basically what I want to do is recurse through a typelist (mpl::vector) popping an element each time and end recursion by using apply_if with mpl::empty<List> as the condition. I've made a simple Reverse class template to illustrate the problem. BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME error

I get the following error when trying to use the filesystem library on MSVC 6.0 : error C2061: syntax error : identifier 'BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME' The line causing the problem is in the \detail\iterator.hpp file: template <class T> type_traits::yes_type is_mutable_iterator_helper(T const*, BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME T::value_type*); I have run a config Test and both BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME and BOOST_NO_DEDUCED_TYPENAME are defined but have no value. Since MSVC 6.0 supports the 'typename' keyword I would think that the declaration above in the iterator.hpp file should use 'typename' rather than BOOST_DEDUCED_TYPENAME. dollar sign doesn't work in regular and format expressions

I am compiling a program that uses the boost RegEx library on an AS/400 native C compiler. When compiled with VC6 it runs fine, but when compiled with the AS/400 compiler, the dollar sign doesn't function in either the regular and format expressions. For example, when I try a regex_merge and I have a format expression something like this "Example $1 and $2", it will find the submatches, but not insert anything in for $1 and $2, it'll just be "Example and ". Also, in a regular expression when the dollar sign serves as a line anchor, it won't match when it should. Both usages of the dollar sign run fine when compiled on the PC. Everything else, so far, seems to be working okay on the AS/400. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Doug

I am having some problems with boost::signals version 1_30_0 on XP, compiled and linked using VC6. I am building a timer mechanism, similar to that with Qt. A user instanciates a timer with some millisecond value, starts the timer via t.Start(), and then enters the event loop (or in most cases, returns from a function call by the event loop). Hi Mark, boost::regex_match requires the regex to match the _whole_ string, use another regex - "^Now.*$" - or another method - boost::regex_search. Borland 5 and indirect_iterator

Hi all, Using Borland C++Builder5 (which has bcc32 5.5.1) I've attempted the tests for indirect_iterator which compile fine. However, the following fails: list< shared_ptr< int > > ctr; void foo( int x ) { } for_each( make_indirect_iterator( ctr.begin() ), make_indirect_iterator( ctr.end() ), foo ); with the first error being: [C++ Error] iterator.h(125): E2404 Dependent type qualifier 'shared_ptr<int>' has no member type named 'difference_type' which then causes a failure to instantiate the iterator_traits. I'm no template guru, so I can make the full error list available if required. Anyone know what's going on? MPL pop_back problem

I get some weird error messages which I don't really understand when I tried using mpl::pop_back today. This is also stuff that has been answered before. I really have searched. Links to the answers will be as appreciate as an inline responses. I've been using free file-scoped functions up to now because I really don't understand what a boost::function0<void>& is. I get, I think, that it can't be a member function, because there is no 'this' attached. Using time_duration::rep_type::ticks_per_second

I have written a function to convert a posix_time::ptime to a windows FILETIME (which is in essence a 64-bit value counting 100-nanosecond intervals since Jan 01, 1601). In order to do so, I do a time difference between the ptime and a time setup to the FILETIME reference time. To convert from this time_duration to the FILETIME count, I use time_duration::rep_type::ticks_per_second. Since this does not seem to be documented I just wanted to make sure I was using it correctly (or if I should be using it at all). regex build problem

Hi everybody I tried to build boost out of the box. Everthing worked fine except the following: ------------------------------------- D:\boost\boost_1_30_0>bjam "-sTOOLS=cwpro8" ... FileClone libs\regex\build\bin-stage\boost_regex_debug.lib The system cannot find the file specified. ... FileClone libs\regex\build\bin-stage\boost_regex.lib The system cannot find the file specified. -------------------------------------- The actual file names generated in libs\regex\build\bin-stage are: libboost_regex_debug.lib and libboost_regex.lib, i.e. they have an extra "lib" prepended. Interestingly enough the analogous dll files are: boost_regex_debug.dll and boost_regex.dll as expected. Any ideas? Benedikt

more ublas test problems

When compling the bench* tests for ublas using the jamfiles, both cwpro8 and borland do not seem to know about the function rand(). I think that <stdlib.h> should be included somewhere. MSVC seems to do this implicitely. Furthermore, only debug versions are generated for all tests (test* and bench*). Benedikt

strange behaviour at setup on windows2000

I had the following trouble setting up boost 1.29.0 on windows 2000 (using vc7, but that's not the point) the first thing bjam did (the version downloaded from sourceforge) was to erase all the files and folders in tools\ so that no build could be performed... setting those files to read-only was enough but that's an unexpected behaviour. lambda library: how to use io manipulators?

The following compiles: (cout << _1 << "\n")(x); but this doesn't: (cout << _1 << endl)(x); (gcc 3.2.2) I can't figure out how to use an io manipulator within a lambda function. Firstly, how do I do it? (e.g. suppose I want to use flush, for which there is no workaround like using "\n"). Secondly, a suggestion: it would be nice if support was built in for the io manipulators. - Chuck

Hi, The following code: const bool isWS = ::boost::is_base_and_derived<std::wstring,std::wstring>::value; sets isWS false with VS.NET 2003 (_MSC_VER=1310) in version 1.30.0 of the libraries. shared_from_this from a destructor

Please forgive the double posting, but I am still unfamiliar with the community...) version: boost 1.30.0 library: smart pointers I am using the boost::enable_shared_from_this base class from the smart pointer library to implement shared_from_this in my classes. I was amazed to find this class, after hours of thashing trying even to figure out the very problem it solves. So, first off, thanks to the boosters. My problem is that shared_from_this() throws boost::bad_weak_ptr if called from my class's destructor. Is this a design decision? a bug? am I misreading a class requirement? The problem (if it is one...) is that sp_counted_base::release() decrements use_count_ before calling dispose(). Then when my class calls shared_from_this from its destructor (via dispose()), sp_counted_base::add_ref fails (use_count == 0) and throws boost::bad_weak_ptr. I would suggest either setting use_count_ after dispose(), or clarifying in the docs that shared_from_this can't be called from a destructor. (... which would send me back to the drawing board to solve my problem) It would also be handy to have an exception less version of share_from_this which justs returns a null shared_ptr. ? Using std::max_element() on a multi_array

I'm looking for advice on using std::max_element() with boost::multi_array. When passing a multi_array to max_element() I was expecting to get an iterator referring to the largest element in return. However my compiler tells me the iterator refers to a sub_array<class RAClass::RAPoint,1> instead, and I don't know why or what to do about it. Its clear that inexperience with multi_array and max_element() is the cause. Is anyone able to shed some light on the subject? BGL - misc problems encountered

I've been testing out the BGL, and have found some small problems. Is this a good forum to post these? If not, please set me straight. I have in mind to post more of these -- in the interest of helping iron out the library. Maybe the developer list would be more appropriate? Or a BGL-specific list, if one exists...?
