[uBLAS] Expert Developer Advice Needed ... Maybe...

Hi Guys, After a significantly long break from using uBLAS, I have now been lucky enough to find myself in a new role where I can again use it! Having noted that there was no vector cross product in uBLAS, I thought I would implement my own. To make it really efficient and work in with the other uBLAS features, I thought I would try to make a compatible routine that eliminates temporaries and uses the other cool uBLAS features. So far so good. To start, I decided to use a simple case that I could easily check: a 3d vector. I also decided to copy some other routines as required to get going. For this reason I copied "scalar_plus". Now that I have written the short piece code, it doesn't quite get there. So far not so good. ;-) I am hoping that a reader please review the short code and output below and give some quick pointers about what I can do better...? Perhaps I need to get some better knowledge about the relevant tricks -- I was hoping to emulate another developer in the first instance. Nesting Grammars with boost::spirit

I have two grammars defined (value and variable). Looking deeper into this issue was a bit of nightmare; since the offending type consists of numerous nested typdefs etc. etc. If anyone has a short and sweet answer to my essay of a question, I would appreciate it. The obvious answer of "don't use the Intel compiler" will not suffice! Saying that, when I switched from the Intel compiler to bad old MSVC6 I had not problems. But our company's software requires the performance gain provided by the Intel compiler on Windows. Another issue, I saw that during installation of Boost, it is possible using STLPort and MSVC6 together, but (for the reasons mentioned above), why not STLPort with the Intel compiler? ublas test with cwpro8

Hi I tried to run the tests for ublas with cwpro8 on Window 2000: D:\boost\boost_1_30_0\libs\numeric\ublas\test2>bjam -sTOOLS=cwpro8 The compiler (Codewarrior) has problems with the boost include files. Includes like #include <boost/numeric/ublas/io.hpp> work only with the system path and not with the user path. When I change <include>$(BOOST_ROOT) in the jamfile to <sysinclude>$(BOOST_ROOT) the problem disappears (but would possibly not work for other compilers). Benedikt

Policy based threading question

Dear Boosters! I am designing a class template with policy controled threading behaviour, like template<ThreadingModel=SingleThreaded> class Something; where there are different ThreadingModels available (see Modern C++ Design by Alexandrescu for a discussion of policies). I would like to have Something to inherit ThreadingModel. The idea is that SingleThreaded does not impose any additional penalties. So my Idea was to have something like class SingleThreaded { public: void lock() {} void release() {} } class MultiThreaded { public: void lock() { lock_mutex(m_mutex) } void release() { release_mutex(m_mutex) } private: mutex m_mutex; } and have all functions call lock() and release() accordingly. But this is not good, since it does not use Resource Initialization is Aquisition and leads to exeption safety problems and so on. Furthermore, it is not (because of these reasons) possible to model using boost::mutex ´es since they do not expose a lock() release() interface but can only be locked using scoped_locks. So another idea is to have something like class SingleThreaded { class scoped_lock { // Empty class } } class MultiThreaded { public: class scoped_lock { scoped_lock() // constructor that locks m_mutex of // of MultiThreaded ~scoped_lock() // unlocks } private: boost::mutex m_mutex; } and have the member functions lock the mutex by instantiating an embeded scoped_lock object. Now there are some questions I have: 1.) Does this approach sound sensible, or am I overlooking a commonly used Idiom to achieve this functionality 2.) How can I access the m_mutex member of the right object in scoped_lock()? The only way I can imagin is to give the this pointer to the constructor (like scoped_lock lock(this);). It is somehow not nice, but possible 3.) The actual code I am using looks like //! Policy class. /*! Also, I do not like to have the mutex member public, but if I make it private and write friend class scoped_lock; this does not have the desired effect (MSVC still complains about private data member access) Somehow, I must be getting something completely wrong, so if somebody could point me in the right direction, I would be thankful. Recently I wanted to perform an action on every object in a container of smart pointers (boost::shared_ptr). I couldn't seem to find a concise way to do so. Hi! At present I learn what it means not to have strong typing: I play around with boost::any. A new and healing experience. Thank You, Bjarne, for insisting on strong typing for C++ ;-) Never made so much use of the debugger ... So now I found out that any_cast does not promote types that may be promoted like for int->double conversions. I have a message queue class that has the following API: post( msg ); msg get(); where get( msg ) blocks until there is a message available and post( msg ) notifies when a message is posted. There are four threads waiting in get: MSG mqueue::get(); { MSG msgResult; { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lockQueue( _mutexQueue ); _conditionMessageReady.wait( lockQueue ); if ( _queueOut.size() > 0 ) { msgResult = _queueOut.front(); _queueOut.pop(); } } return msgResult; } The post method USED TO do this: void mqueue::post( MSG msg ) { { boost::mutex::scoped_lock lockQueue( _mutexQueue ); _queueOut.push(msg); } _conditionMessageReady.notify_one(); } When the queue was just a little bit busy (one thread processing, not all four), messages would go into the queue and never come out. I changed the .notify_one() to .notify_all() and I no longer have messages getting stuck in the queue. However, now I have a bunch of threads getting released when there is nothing for them to do (they just loop around and wait again, but YUCK!). Am I missing something or is this "expected" behavior? boost::thread and detaching

Hello. I have a very simple server, in which there is a loop that looks like while( (c_sock = accept(...)) != -1) { try { boost::thread thr( boost::bind(&ServerClass::client_connection, this, c_sock)); }catch ( const std::exception & e) { std::cout << "Exception " << e << std::endl; close(c_sock); } } Now, it used to look more like while( (c_sock = accept(...)) != -1) { pthread_t thr; pthread_attr_t attrs; pthread_attr_init(&attrs); pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attrs, PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED); thr_data * data = new thr_data(this, c_sock); pthread_create(&thr, &attrs, thread_proxy_function, thr_data); } (Actually, the pthread specific stuff and thread parameter wrapping and all that that was done with wrappers written by me. Also, there was proper error checking and all.) Now, the older version worked without any problems. However, the newer version using boost::thread ceased to work after approximately 256 threads had been created *all of which had exited*, pthread_create reporting an error Memory allocation failed which was reported as a resource allocation error by boost::thread. It seems that this problem was caused by the fact that the thread function usually got to execute and finish *before* the temporary thread object was destroyed (boost::thread destructor calls pthread_detach). Apparently LinuxThreads didn't consider it prudent to release the resources allocated to the thread upon call of pthread_detach if the thread had exited but no one had joined it yet. Is my analysis credible? Am I doing something completely idiotic here? I managed to get my server code functioning by poking at the boost::thread code and making it create threads detached by default, but that's hardly a very elegant solution. I've looked around on google but either i'm not concentrating or this issue hasn't come up yet. I've also had a quick look in boost/format but would rather not hack around with stuff i don't know. Hi Andre, this is not only behavior of VC, all compilers, as far as I know have some include/lib paths preconfigured, to prevent you from specifying them always on command lines. I think you might be getting bit by the way wchar_t == unsigned short on MSVC, and when Intel uses MSVC compatibility. We've used Intel 6-7.1, with boost and STLPort for the last 9 months. I also make sure to use the latest Platform SDK. There were a few issues here and there, but things mostly went fine. Is your STLPort built with Intel or MSVC? Here are our instructions for building STLPort from our wiki: * edit stlport/stl_user_config,uncomment the macro _STLP_NEW_PLATFORM_SDK defined. * on the command line, go to the src subdirectory * run nmake -f intel50.mak clean all (make sure in your global include path that the SDK inlclude path comes before the VC98 path otherwise you will get build errors) * If successful, run nmake -f intel50.mak all install * In MSVC, go to tools/options/Directories, and make [path to msvc]/VC98/include/stlport the first entry in the list. After that: What command line options are you using? Are you using MSVC or Makefiles? I just went and looked at your errors again... It says std::. Er, Visual C++ is not alone in this behaviour. The compilers I'm familiar with all behave that way - the directories are searched in the order they are specified. When a match is found, the search stops. The same logic applies when using LIB to find libraries, PATH to find executables, and so on. Why should INCLUDE behave differently? Think about it - you have two different header files with the same name: the standard ones shipped with VC, and the StlPORT. How else would you expect the compiler to behave? Pick the last one it finds? Pick one at random? Spit out an error? -- Jim

boost::mutex::scoped_lock conventions

Is there a convention about whether or not to explicitly call .unlock()? In the case where everything to the end of the scope should be locked, there is no NEED to do it, but isn't it a bit sloppy to leave locks locked? Much like not using braces on one-line 'if' statements, it could cause maintenance problems later. What's the current thinking? Thanks, - Mark P.S. I'm currently always unlocking, because sometimes I want to unlock before the scope ends. This makes it clear exactly what I intend.
